And who's gonna pay for 4 guards per school in a big state like Texas. A guard could earn as high as $100,000 per year.

Just last month, the governor cut $211m from mental healthcare programs in Texas. And cost of running guards may even likely run higher than that.

Police were called when the shooting started in Texas, but I think they got scared of the assault rifle and stood back. They must have heard the sound of the type of gun going off.

There is no law that requires them to intervene. They need to go home to their family too.

Something needs to be done else there won't be an end in sight to the mass shootings. Weapons are getting more powerful, becoming cheaper due to improvement in manufacturing, and also easier to access due to some states relaxing gun restriction laws.

At least 2,000 people have been killed or injured in mass shootings since 1999.

You can go on Google. There are literally mass shootings every year even when there are no elections. Most of it publicised bigly. Especially if children are involved. Americans don't joke around with their pets let alone their kids. You don't expect people to keep quiet, clap and move on like everything is alright. There have been school shooting in the US almost every year since 1900. Only difference is that the casualty became greater with advancement in gun technology, guns became cheaper and there are now easier access to guns. Let's not forget the NRA and the conservatives that are in bed together (campaign funds flowing in easily to the GOP from NRA). Guns are also now more deadly. Sophisticated assault rifles that can fire many rounds at a time and don't jam as often anymore. I even left a picture of a Tommy machine gun to give him a clue but he still did not get it LOL.

An 18 year old carrying a Tommy in 1950 or 1970 America will be something. Nowadays you have them getting an AR15 as birthday present.

1950 to 1975 is a wide range of data and also old as well. Technology has advanced since then. We could also talk about socio economic factors and so on.

However, gun violence has always been around in the USA from the times of the Wild West and to the prohibition era and till date. There have been several attempts of failed bills and acts passed to regulate and curtail gun violence to an extent.

Please read up on the gun control act of 1968 and what led to the act. If you want to read further, you can also read up on the brady handgun violence Prevention Act of 1993 or the 1934/1938 acts.

So what's special about America? Disregard for mental health and lack of universal healthcare.

I beg to differ on point 1:

I can't think of any developed country at the top of my head that has lax gun laws like the USA. Basically, there are lots of guns in circulation and research as always pointed to the fact that lax gun laws leads to more gun deaths. Basically, there are too many guns/assault rifles in circulation. Let's not even go into the loophole of private sellers from guns shows that helps buyers to bypass background checks.

Universal healthcare would not have saved those kids that got their fragile bodies torn apart with bullets from an assault rifle. Mental health care is also very expensive as encompass a lot of care and support from social workers, case officers, police officers, security guards, mental health doctors & nurses, emergency wards of hospitals (people can suddenly flip), missed diagnosis, care homes e.t.c Just last month, Abbott slashed $211,000,000 from the budget of the state department that oversees mental health programs.

However, I agree with your 2nd point:
Multiple systems, high cost/wages for healthcare professionals, high cost of medications, defensive medicine, government not taking a larger role on controlling cost, adminstrative cost e.t.c. has made the healthcare system expensive and not excellent.

Finally,
The kids killed have not even been buried yet, and the NRA convention with some GOP attendees like Trump, Cruz and Abbott is going ahead at Houston tomorrow. I expect to see protests.
