The main people who were murdered at the January 1966 coup were responsible for Awolowo’s imprisonment: Ladoke Akintola, Ahmadu Bello, and Tafawa Balewa. Why? Nnamdi Azikiwe, according to the coup plotters including Ademoyega wasn’t on their target list.

I personally don’t think Awolowo planned the coup because I haven’t seen evidence to that, but I think they may have thought he was wrongfully imprisoned and wanted to set him free, something Gowon will eventually do to bring peace and stability to his government.

Ademoyega himself admitted that the coup wasn’t ethnic motivated, and he published this book over 15 years after the coup, many years after most of the coup plotters had passed. He (Ademoyega) was one of the planners if not the mastermind because he was the most educated and oldest of them all.

IBB’s book states what many people have known already, but it puts a major endorsement to it because he was a witness as a young officer and lived all through it daily in the army, rising through the ranks to eventually become head of state.
