Educational ServicesThe 3 Common Mistakes Nigerians Make In Motivation Letters That Kill by ScholarshipNGDa(op): 12:41pm On Jul 03
Hello everyone,

As the international scholarship season kicks off, thousands of brilliant Nigerian students with great CGPAs will get rejected.

Why? Because of poor motivation letters and Statements of Purpose (SOP).

After reviewing dozens of drafts, here are the 3 major mistakes I see Nigerians make constantly:

1. The "Sob Story" Trap: Writing paragraphs about how hard things are economically in Nigeria. Scholarship boards do not award money out of pity; they fund potential and academic value.

2. The Copy-and-Paste Template Cliché: Starting with generic internet phrases like "With reference to your portal, I hereby apply..." Admission committees read thousands of letters and can spot a Google template from a mile away. Your opening hook must be unique to your research interests.

3. Not Researching the School: Failing to name-drop specific professors, lab equipment, or unique course modules. If your letter can be sent to 5 different universities without changing anything but the name, it is a bad letter.

I am hosting a live breakdown session in our WhatsApp group this week where I will be pointing out these mistakes and reviewing members' letter introductions for free.
