Three years after one of Nigeria's biggest JAMB controversies, Ejikeme Mmesoma is now eligible to register for the UTME again as the three-year ban imposed on her by JAMB has officially expired this July.

For those who may not remember the story, Mmesoma became a national topic in July 2023 after claiming she scored 362 in the UTME. The score would have placed her among the highest-scoring candidates in the country.

However, JAMB maintained that her authentic score was 249, alleging that the result slip showing 362 had been manipulated. The board pointed to several inconsistencies, including the result slip format, registration details and examination information.

The Anambra State Government later constituted an independent investigative panel. After reviewing evidence and hearing from all parties, the panel concluded that Mmesoma's actual UTME score was 249 and that the 362 score had been altered. The panel also reported that she admitted manipulating the result and apologised to JAMB, the Anambra State Government and her school.

Following the investigation:
- JAMB withdrew her 2023 UTME result.
- She was banned from writing any JAMB examination for three years.
- Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing withdrew the scholarship it had earlier awarded her.
- Governor Chukwuma Soludo directed that she undergo counselling and psychotherapy.

The case generated nationwide debate. While some Nigerians initially doubted JAMB's position, many accepted the findings after the independent panel released its report. Several public figures, including Oby Ezekwesili and Osita Chidoka, appealed for compassion and counselling rather than prolonged public condemnation.

Where things stand today
As of July 2026, Mmesoma's three-year ban has expired. She is now free to register for and sit the UTME again if she decides to continue her pursuit of admission into a Nigerian tertiary institution. So far, there has been no public announcement that she has registered for the examination or gained admission.

The Mmesoma saga remains one of the most referenced cases whenever discussions arise about examination malpractice, result verification and academic integrity in Nigeria.

Many admission seekers upload their WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB result to JAMB and assume everything is fine. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

There have been situations where candidates uploaded their O'Level result, but it didn't reflect on the JAMB portal due to upload errors or technical issues. Some only discovered the problem after their preferred school had started offering admission. For some, it becomes too late after their school has rounded up the admission exercise for the year.

In addition, many institutions have repeatedly emphasized that every candidate should confirm that their O'Level result is successfully uploaded and reflecting on the JAMB portal before admission is processed. In that case, even if you have uploaded your result before, it's still advisable to verify that it is visible on your JAMB profile.

The good news is that checking it only takes a few minutes.

How to Confirm Your O'Level Result on the JAMB Portal

1. Visit the JAMB eFacility portal: https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/
2. Log in with the email address and password you used for your JAMB registration.
3. Click "Check Admission Status."
4. Select your examination year and enter your JAMB Registration Number if required.
5. Click "Access My CAPS."
6. If you're using a phone and the CAPS page doesn't display properly, enable Desktop Site in your browser.
7. From the menu on the left, click "My O'Level." Depending on your phone, you may find this option displayed on the page in boxes rather than on the left menu.
8. Your uploaded subjects and grades should be displayed if your upload was successful.

If your subjects and grades are displayed: Your O'Level result is reflecting correctly on the JAMB portal. You're good to go.

If it shows "AR" (Awaiting Result), is blank, or no result is displayed, use the REFRESH option on the page. If your O'Level result is still not reflecting after refreshing, then you'll need to visit a JAMB-accredited CBT centre to upload or reupload as the case may be.

Don't wait until admission lists start coming out before confirming your O'Level status. Spending just a few minutes now could save you from unnecessary admission issues later.
