Nigerians living in Canada may soon be able to write JAMB UTME without travelling back to Nigeria for the examination.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a UTME examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, with operations expected to begin in 2027.

The proposed centre is expected to serve eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America, particularly those who want to gain admission into Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions.

According to JAMB, the centre is intended to make the UTME more accessible to Nigerians in the diaspora and reduce the need to travel to Nigeria solely to sit for the examination.

The Board also says the initiative will help strengthen the connection between Nigerians abroad and Nigeria's tertiary education system, while creating more opportunities to showcase Nigerian higher education internationally.

The announcement followed a visit by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada.

JAMB described the initiative as part of its broader effort to take Nigerian tertiary education to the world. The board says it is working towards establishing the centre, and it is expected to commence operations in 2027. This will expand JAMB's reach beyond Nigeria and the foreign locations where it already conducts the UTME.

JAMB HAS JUST INTRODUCED A NEW WAY TO CHANGE YOUR PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS

JAMB has newly introduced a process that allows candidates who have lost access to the phone number and/or email address they used for their JAMB registration to update these details.

Previously, candidates who lost access to their registered phone number or email faced difficulties changing these details. With this new process, eligible candidates can now request a SIM swap and/or email address change through JAMB.

However, the process is not completely online. You will need to make a payment through the JAMB portal and then visit a designated JAMB CBT/PRC Centre to complete the process.

Here are the steps:

1. Get a court affidavit

Obtain a court affidavit supporting your request for a SIM swap and/or email address change.

2. Log in to your JAMB e-Facility

Log in to your JAMB e-Facility profile using your existing credentials.

3. Go to "Penalties"

From your dashboard, locate and select Penalties.

4. Select SIM Swap/Email Change

Select SIM Swap/Email Change Penalty Payment and proceed.

5. Make the required payment

Complete the payment through the JAMB portal.

6. Visit a designated JAMB CBT/PRC Centre

After making the payment, proceed to a designated centre to complete the process.

7. Complete biometric verification

At the centre, provide your Profile Code or existing GSM number. Your details will be retrieved and your biometrics will be verified.

8. Select what you want to change

You can request to change:

• Your phone number only
• Your email address only
• Both your phone number and email address

9. Enter your new details

Enter the new phone number and/or email address and upload the scanned copy of your court affidavit.

10. Submit the request

Click Update and wait for confirmation that the change has been successfully completed.

IMPORTANT:

JAMB says this service is meant for candidates who have genuinely lost access to their registered phone number and/or email address.

Also, the service can be accessed only once, so make sure the new details you provide are correct.

JAMB Underage Candidates: Can Under-16s Get Admission?

Your child is 14 or 15 and doing brilliantly in school. Can they skip ahead and start university early? JAMB says yes, but the odds are far tougher than most parents realise. In the last year's exercise, only 85 out of 41,027 underage candidates were cleared for admission.

JAMB's current position is that the minimum admission age is 16. A candidate must turn 16 by September 30 of that admission year. Anyone who will be younger than that on the cut-off date is classed as underage and can only be considered through the exceptional-candidate route.

What an underage candidate must meet if they want to go through the exceptional candidate route:

- UTME: at least 320 out of 400 (80%)
- O'Level/SSCE: at least 80% in the relevant subjects
- Post-UTME: at least 80%, plus the chosen institution's requirements
- JAMB's final exceptional-candidate assessment

What happened with underage candidates this year:

JAMB initially withheld their UTME results, and the "No Result Yet" status was a deliberate policy decision. The results were later released for viewing only, with JAMB stating clearly that this gives no automatic right to admission.

To proceed, a candidate must show outstanding academic ability and sufficient personal maturity, then pass some multiple stages of assessment and verification.

Also, meeting the benchmark only makes a candidate eligible for consideration. The institution's own screening still applies.

How it played out in the 2025 exercise:

- 41,027 underage candidates sat for JAMB.
- 599 scored at least 80% (320) in the UTME and moved to further assessment.
- After certificate verification and Post-UTME screening, 182 became finalists.
- After verification, interviews and further screening, only 85 were cleared for exceptional admission.

To parents especially, before registering your child for next year's JAMB, please weigh these requirements carefully. Being underage is not a shortcut. Out of 41,027 candidates, only 85 made it through. Be certain your child is truly ready for what it takes.

If they're not ready, don't force them. If anything at all, you could use the exam to help them identify the lapses to work on while they're getting ready.

After reportedly describing some protesting Law students as “intellectually bankrupt”, the university's DVC was captured climbing over a fence to escape.

According to reports, the Law students had blocked the usual exit after the heated confrontation over the 10-year ban on Atiba University's Law programme.

Atiba University Law Programme Gets 10-Year Ban As CLE Approves 5 New Universities To Study Law

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has placed the Law programme of Atiba University, Oyo State, under a 10-year moratorium.

The decision was reached during the Council's Third Quarter Hybrid Meeting held on August 13, 2026, at the Nigerian Law School headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.

Why was Atiba University banned?

According to the Council of Legal Education, the decision followed two major findings:

- The facilities at Atiba University were found to be inappropriate and inadequate for the establishment and operation of a Faculty of Law.
- The university was also found to have admitted and graduated Law students without obtaining the requisite approval.

The CLE said the 10-year moratorium is a regulatory measure intended to ensure compliance with prescribed standards and protect the quality and integrity of legal education in Nigeria.

The development has raised concerns about the future of students currently enrolled in the university's Law programme.

Following the ban, the Vice-Chancellor of Atiba University, Prof. Sunday Okeniyi, said the university would assist affected students with transfer to other universities, provision of transcripts and refund of tuition fees for those who choose to withdraw.

Meanwhile, CLE Approves 5 New Universities To Offer Law
At the same meeting where the Atiba sanction was announced, the Council of Legal Education approved five universities to commence Law programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approved universities are:
1. Amadeus University, Amazi, Abia State
2. Akwa Ibom State University
3. European University of Nigeria, Abuja
4. Oduduwa University, Ipetu-Modu, Osun State
5. Peaceland University, Enugu State

Each of the five universities was approved with an initial quota of 50 students for its 100-level Law intake.

The CLE also declined to approve Maranatha University, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, to commence a Law programme after identifying numerous deficiencies during its verification exercise.

The development is a reminder to prospective Law students that having a Law faculty or programme in a university does not automatically mean that the programme has the necessary professional approval.

Students are advised to confirm the current approval status of any university's Law programme before accepting admission or paying fees.

Three years after one of Nigeria's biggest JAMB controversies, Ejikeme Mmesoma is now eligible to register for the UTME again as the three-year ban imposed on her by JAMB has officially expired this July.

For those who may not remember the story, Mmesoma became a national topic in July 2023 after claiming she scored 362 in the UTME. The score would have placed her among the highest-scoring candidates in the country.

However, JAMB maintained that her authentic score was 249, alleging that the result slip showing 362 had been manipulated. The board pointed to several inconsistencies, including the result slip format, registration details and examination information.

The Anambra State Government later constituted an independent investigative panel. After reviewing evidence and hearing from all parties, the panel concluded that Mmesoma's actual UTME score was 249 and that the 362 score had been altered. The panel also reported that she admitted manipulating the result and apologised to JAMB, the Anambra State Government and her school.

Following the investigation:
- JAMB withdrew her 2023 UTME result.
- She was banned from writing any JAMB examination for three years.
- Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing withdrew the scholarship it had earlier awarded her.
- Governor Chukwuma Soludo directed that she undergo counselling and psychotherapy.

The case generated nationwide debate. While some Nigerians initially doubted JAMB's position, many accepted the findings after the independent panel released its report. Several public figures, including Oby Ezekwesili and Osita Chidoka, appealed for compassion and counselling rather than prolonged public condemnation.

Where things stand today
As of July 2026, Mmesoma's three-year ban has expired. She is now free to register for and sit the UTME again if she decides to continue her pursuit of admission into a Nigerian tertiary institution. So far, there has been no public announcement that she has registered for the examination or gained admission.

The Mmesoma saga remains one of the most referenced cases whenever discussions arise about examination malpractice, result verification and academic integrity in Nigeria.

Many admission seekers upload their WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB result to JAMB and assume everything is fine. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

There have been situations where candidates uploaded their O'Level result, but it didn't reflect on the JAMB portal due to upload errors or technical issues. Some only discovered the problem after their preferred school had started offering admission. For some, it becomes too late after their school has rounded up the admission exercise for the year.

In addition, many institutions have repeatedly emphasized that every candidate should confirm that their O'Level result is successfully uploaded and reflecting on the JAMB portal before admission is processed. In that case, even if you have uploaded your result before, it's still advisable to verify that it is visible on your JAMB profile.

The good news is that checking it only takes a few minutes.

How to Confirm Your O'Level Result on the JAMB Portal

1. Visit the JAMB eFacility portal: https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/
2. Log in with the email address and password you used for your JAMB registration.
3. Click "Check Admission Status."
4. Select your examination year and enter your JAMB Registration Number if required.
5. Click "Access My CAPS."
6. If you're using a phone and the CAPS page doesn't display properly, enable Desktop Site in your browser.
7. From the menu on the left, click "My O'Level." Depending on your phone, you may find this option displayed on the page in boxes rather than on the left menu.
8. Your uploaded subjects and grades should be displayed if your upload was successful.

If your subjects and grades are displayed: Your O'Level result is reflecting correctly on the JAMB portal. You're good to go.

If it shows "AR" (Awaiting Result), is blank, or no result is displayed, use the REFRESH option on the page. If your O'Level result is still not reflecting after refreshing, then you'll need to visit a JAMB-accredited CBT centre to upload or reupload as the case may be.

Don't wait until admission lists start coming out before confirming your O'Level status. Spending just a few minutes now could save you from unnecessary admission issues later.
