The World Champion, Jighere Wellington has clinched the third edition of Nigeria Scrabble Players Competition over the weekend . He beat 21 other competitors to the title in the Masters Category.

NSPC is the baby of Nigeria Scrabble Friends which is a loose gathering of Scrabble players using social media to further the growth of Scrabble. Through both Facebook and Whatsapp platforms, we were able to raise prize funds and logistics details to execute the project.

It is amazing what Scrabble players can do for themselves when they have their minds set on it .

This year's edition had School Scrabble Category. It was sheer bliss seeing the little ones slug it out competitively on the board while their parents watch on.

A quadriplegic participated in the event. Not only did he participate, he returned on the second day to complete his games regardless of the beatings he received on Day 1.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I wish to thank everyone involved in making NSPC3 the huge success it was.

As The World Scrabble Champion, WELLINGTON JIGHERE prepares to defend his title in Lille, France, Nigeria Scrabble Friends is pleased to announce Nigeria Scrabble Players Competition (NSPC3) which is the last tone up competition before the world event.

NSPC3, as the name suggests, is the 3rd event Scrabble competition completely hatched, nurtured and sponsored through the initiative and drive of Scrabble players themselves, The body of money to be paid out as Prize money are all freely donated by players themselves.

NSPC3 is coming to LAGOS after previous events have gone to Abeokuta and Port Harcourt.
The event holds on 30th and 31st July, 2016 at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Media Centre Hall.

There will be a MASTERS category where the heavyweights will compete for honors.
A novel Intermediate/Opens/Veteran Category also exists where all participants will joust evenly but Prizes will be allocated based on rating standings on the National Rating stand.

The future of the game is secured when we can transfer knowledge and skills to the younger ones which explains why we have the School Scrabble Category in this year`s edition.

In support of this competition, we have to acknowledge Kenya Airways for donating International Flight Tickets to NSPC3.

Lagos – Mr Jighere Wellington of Nigeria on Sunday morning emerged the new Scrabble champion of the world after defeating Lewis Mackay 4-0 in a Best of Seven series in Perth Australia.

The duel which was monitored online kicked off at 2 a.m. Nigerian time with the winner set to emerge after coming tops in seven games.

But Wellington, who had already finished first in a 32-Game Scrabble marathon to qualify for the two-man finals and defeated his English opponent in just four games and thus becomes the new World Scrabble Champion.

Wellington also placed 3rd at the World Scrabble Championship in 2007.

Nigeria also emerged as the best team of the championship as five of its six representatives finished in top 50 players of the tournament with Ayorinde Saidu and Emmanuel Umujose placing 16th and 17th, respectively.

With this victory Nigeria will gain more slots in terms of representations at subsequent world tournaments.

The President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Suleiman Garba, in a phone interview attributed the victory to hard work and dedication.

“It is a testimony of the potential of Nigeria as a country and the sacrifice and hard work of the board under my leadership.

“We started preparation about a year ago with seven camps which we christened Scrabble Meets to put our team in shape for the world championship and it has paid off.
