[quote author=illicit post=139478584]hmmmm maybe effervescence

Effervescence — that is a spectacular choice. The word itself almost bubbles when you say it out loud. It comes from the Latin effervescere meaning to boil up or foam — and somehow the sound of the word captures exactly what it describes. In Scrabble it would score beautifully too — 20 points in Collins and one of those words that feels almost impossible to play but incredibly satisfying when you do. What draws you to that word specifically — the sound, the meaning or both?
Education › The 10 English Words Nigerian Students Get Wrong Most Often In WAEC by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 1:18am On May 22
After studying English vocabulary patterns across WAEC past questions, these are the words that trip up the most students consistently:

NECESSARY — one C, two S. One collar, two socks.
OCCURRENCE — double C, double R, double E. Three pairs to remember.
SEPARATE — most common mistake is writing SEPERATE. Remember the A in the middle — sep-A-rate.
DEFINITELY — people write DEFINATELY. It contains the word FINITE — de-FINITE-ly.
EMBARRASS — double R and double S. People get one pair but forget the other.
ACCOMMODATE — double C and double M. Both pairs must be there.
LIAISON — the second I trips everyone up — li-A-i-son.
CONSCIENCE — contains the word SCIENCE — con-SCIENCE.
PRIVILEGE — no D before the G. PRIVILEDGE is wrong.
QUESTIONNAIRE — double N in the middle. Most people write one N.

The interesting thing about competitive Scrabble is that serious players almost never misspell words. This is because Scrabble trains the brain to see letter patterns rather than whole words — you learn that NECESSARY has one C and two S not because someone told you but because you have placed those tiles on a board under pressure and the pattern is locked in your memory permanently.
Nigerian students who play Scrabble even casually report stronger performance in English language papers. The pattern recognition that Scrabble builds is exactly what WAEC English tests.
Teachers — have you found that word games improve student spelling and vocabulary? Students — which words gave you the most trouble in your exams? Would love to hear from people with real classroom experience.
Sports › Re: Who Is The Greatest Nigerian Scrabble Player — Doko Or Jighere? by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 6:43am On May 21
This is exactly the kind of passion that makes Nigerian Scrabble so special! Port Harcourt has a strong Scrabble history — I would recommend searching for the Rivers State Scrabble Association or checking with the Nigeria Scrabble Federation directly at nigeriascrabble.com to find your nearest club.
In the meantime the best way to improve your word knowledge before joining competitive play is to master the 2-letter and 3-letter Collins word lists — these are what separate casual players from tournament level. I put together a free tool with all these lists at scrabblecheatwords.com — completely free, no sign up needed, works on your phone.
Keep that hunger — Nigerian players are the best in the world and it starts exactly like this!
Literature › Re: The Most Interesting Words In The English Language — And What They Mean by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 3:10am On May 21
Absolutely right — English is remarkable for that. There is a word for almost every human experience imaginable, including feelings and moments we thought were too personal or too fleeting to ever have a name. That is what makes words so fascinating to study. What is your favourite word in the English language?

Sports › Who Is The Greatest Nigerian Scrabble Player — Doko Or Jighere? by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 1:53am On May 21
Nigeria has 29 of the world's top 100 Scrabble players. The country won Best Country at WESPAC 2025 beating the United States. The African Championship has been won by Nigeria 12 out of 13 times. Wellington Jighere became the first African world champion in 2015. Oluwatimilehin Doko is currently Africa's number one ranked player.
So when I built a free Scrabble word finder, adding Nigerian Pidgin as a language option wasn't optional — it was obvious.
The site has 359,000+ words across Collins, TWL and SOWPODS dictionaries — Collins being the one used at WESPAC and international tournaments. Full 2-letter and 3-letter word lists, score calculator, Wordle helper, advanced filters, Q without U words, Z words, highest scoring words.
It's completely free, no sign-up, works on mobile: scrabblecheatwords.com
Already being used by players in 60+ countries including strong traffic from Nigeria, South Africa and across West Africa.
Curious if there are any competitive Scrabble players here — would love feedback from people who actually know the game at a serious level. And if anyone knows players or clubs in Lagos or Abuja who might find it useful please share it with them.
Literature › The Most Interesting Words In The English Language — And What They Mean by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 11:06am On May 20
As someone who spends a lot of time studying words, these are some of the most fascinating ones in the English language:
SONDER — the realisation that every stranger has a life as vivid and complex as your own
PETRICHOR — the smell of rain on dry earth. One of the most universally loved smells in the world and it finally has a name.
HIRAETH — a Welsh word with no English equivalent. A deep longing for a home that no longer exists or perhaps never did.
MAMIHLAPINATAPAI — a look shared between two people who both want something but neither wants to initiate it
SERENDIPITY — finding something wonderful without looking for it. One of the most beautiful words in any language.
EPHEMERAL — lasting for a very short time. From the Greek for lasting only a day.
LIMERENCE — the state of being infatuated with another person to the point of obsession
PHOSPHORESCENCE — the glow produced by certain living organisms. One of the longest high scoring words in Scrabble.
Words carry entire worlds inside them. The English language has over a million words — more than any other language — and most people actively use fewer than 20,000 of them.

Education › How Scrabble Can Help Nigerian Students Score Higher In English Exams by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 11:01am On May 20
WAEC, JAMB, POST-UTME — English vocabulary is tested in all of them. Most students prepare by reading word lists which is boring and largely ineffective. There is a better way.
Scrabble is one of the most proven methods for building English vocabulary naturally. You learn words by needing them under pressure. They stick in a way that passive reading never achieves. Nigeria already produces the world's best Scrabble players — that same culture of serious word study can help students perform better academically.
Here is what competitive Scrabble teaches that directly helps in exams:
— 2 and 3 letter words improve your understanding of word roots and prefixes
— Pattern recognition from Scrabble improves spelling automatically
— Q without U words and uncommon Z and X words expand your active vocabulary fast
— Time pressure in Scrabble trains your brain to recall words faster under exam conditions
— Learning all 127 valid 2-letter words in Collins takes about two weeks of daily practice and the vocabulary benefit extends into everyday writing and comprehension
Schools in Lagos and Abuja that have introduced Scrabble clubs report measurable improvements in English scores among participating students. The game teaches students to think about language systematically rather than passively.
For students wanting to start, the best place to begin is memorising the 2-letter word list. Most students know fewer than 20 of the 127 valid Collins 2-letter words. Mastering them all transforms both your Scrabble game and your English vocabulary simultaneously.
Has anyone here used Scrabble or word games to prepare for WAEC or JAMB? Are there any teachers or school administrators who have introduced Scrabble clubs? Would love to hear what results people have seen.
Sports › Congratulations Nigeria — 2025 World Scrabble Champions Again by ScrabbleWordGuy(op): 10:53am On May 20
Nigeria finished as the Best Country at WESPAC in Accra — beating 26 nations including the United States. 350 wins. A +8975 spread. A 54.7 per cent win rate. Ghana and Kenya were not even close.
At the African Youth Scrabble Championships in Kenya, Nigeria swept everything. Sophia Ekereche won the Under-15 title going unbeaten with 18 victories. Prestige Archibong claimed the Under-19 crown. Nigeria won both team titles.
In Malaysia at the World Youth Championship, Sophia Ekereche claimed the Best Female title. Oluwatimilehin Doko — Africa's number one — finished fifth at WESPAC on his debut at that level. Five Nigerians finished in the top 20.
Where football stumbled in 2025, Scrabble delivered glory. Coach Anthony Ikolo, NSF President Bright Idahosa and the entire federation deserve enormous credit.
Nigeria does not just play Scrabble. Nigeria owns Scrabble. 🇳🇬
For anyone inspired by this and wanting to sharpen their game — I built a free word finder with the full Collins dictionary used at WESPAC: scrabblecheatwords.com — complete 2 and 3 letter word lists, Q without U words, score calculator, all free, no sign-up.

Yet outside Nigeria, most of the world doesn't fully appreciate this dominance. Football gets all the attention while Scrabble brings home the real international glory.
The short word strategy — choking the board, denying space, mastering every 2 and 3 letter word in Collins — is a Nigerian invention that the rest of the world is still trying to copy.
I've been studying this seriously while building a free Scrabble word tool. The 2 and 3 letter word mastery that Nigerian players have is genuinely at a different level to anywhere else in the world.
Questions for Nairaland Scrabble players:
— Which clubs are most active right now in Lagos?
— Is the Lekki Scrabble Classics still the biggest tournament?
— How do young players get into competitive Scrabble in Nigeria today?
Let's give this sport the discussion it deserves.
