Automotive powerhouses Mercedes-Benz and Geely have formally established the global joint venture “smart Automobile Co., Ltd.” for the smart brand. Each company will contribute 2.7 billion RMB in capital.
The new JV, headquartered in Hangzhou Bay, China, will design the new vehicles using the Mercedes-Benz Design network, while Geely Holding will be responsible for development and engineering. The primary focus will be on extending the smart portfolio to include premium, electric and connected vehicles. Production will be located in China.
“The joint venture will bring the next generation of zero-emission smart cars to the Chinese and global markets,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Daimler and Mercedes.
Li Shufu, Chairman at Geely Holding, said, “We will work together with Mercedes-Benz to transform the smart brand into a leading player in urban premium, electric and connected vehicles to successfully develop the brand’s global potential."
Maserati has started the testing phase of its new full electric propulsion systems that will equip the future models of the Brand.
Some experimental vehicles have now been built equipped with the new innovative powertrain, 100% electric with 100% Maserati technology, developed at the new Innovation Lab in Modena.
During this experimental phase, the sound that will characterise the electric engine will also be developed.
The next full electric models will have a distinctive signature sound, already a unique attribute of all Maserati cars equipped with traditional combustion engines.
Customers will therefore benefit from 100% electric propulsion vehicles that will combine driving pleasure, comfort and performance with a unique and unmistakable sound.
Thanks to the tests conducted in various conditions of use on both road and track, important data will be acquired for the development and definition of the new electric powertrains, which will be used for future models in the Maserati range.
The new Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be the Brand’s first cars to adopt 100% electric solutions and will be built at the Turin production hub.
Metropolitan Region Amsterdam Electric’ (MRA-Electric) has awarded Europe’s largest concession contract for EV charging to Total.
Under this agreement, Total will install and operate up to 20,000 new public EV chargingpoints in the Netherlands, in the three provinces of North-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht
This new contract intends to address the fast growing demand for public EV charging points in the Netherlands. This EV charging network covers a population of 3.2 million inhabitants and around 15% of the current Netherlands EV charging demand.
Total Netherlands’ is already the main EV charging operator in the MRA-Electric region, with over 4 500 public charging points under operation and accessible to the public.
The size of this new contract, the largest ever in Europe, is the logical resultant of the success of the existing EV charging solutions available in the MRA, combined with Total’s expertise in installation, operations and management of public EV charging networks.
As part of this concession contract, the electricity supplied by Total Netherlands to the EV charging network will be 100 % sourced from renewable power (Solar, Wind) and produced in the country.
Total Netherlands has additionally pledged to gradually source part of it from the MRA region itself, enabling EV drivers to charge their electric vehicles with locally-generated and sustainable energy. Total Netherlands will also study new solar power production opportunities in the MRA region.
In addition, Total will develop and implement smart charging technologies allowing both a stable grid management at times of high electricity consumption as well as efficient and sustainable EV charging when cost of energy is more affordable.
The MRA-Electric project is a cooperation of governments in the region aimed at stimulating electromobility in the three provinces North-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht and the municipalities within these provinces.
About 3.2 million people, more than 18 percent of the population in the Netherlands, live within the this region. It is the country’s most robust economic region.
Audi is setting up more than 4,500 EV charging points for battery-operated vehicles, thereby contributing to the energy transition in private transport.
At the main plant in Ingolstadt alone, there will be 3,500 EV charging points available in the final development. There will be 1,000 charging points in Neckarsulm, just under 100 in Brussels and Győr. Likewise, charging infrastructure will be built at the factory in San José Chiapa. The company already offers expansive charging capacities at the training centers at Munich Airport. The entire project has a total budget of up to EUR 100 million.
Establishing such extensive charging infrastructure is a completely new challenge,” Maximilian Huber describes his task. The project manager for site charging is not only in charge of building the charging points but also the energy manager and software provider for the comprehensive charging solution at the automotive manufacturer’s sites.
At the sites in Brussels, Ingolstadt, and Neckarsulm, charging infrastructure with a total power input of 21 megawatts is already available. This corresponds to the power consumption of a small town with 14,000 inhabitants. This includes 600 charging points with an output of up to 22 kilowatts (kW) and 60 direct current charging points with an output between 50 and 350 kW.
By the middle of 2022, there will be 4,500 charging points, each with an output of up to 22 kW, and approx. 50 more with an output of up to 350 kW each at the plant sites alone. A dynamic and intelligent load-management system will be controlling all power input across sites this year already, so the power connection does not need be expanded
Hyundai Motor Company has partnered with Kia Motors Corporation to jointly invest in the manufacturing of electric vehicles. With Hyundai investing €80 million and Kia, €20 million, a total of €100 million has been invested in a United Kingdom-based start-up that manufactures electric vans called Arrival.
The car giants plan to use the partnership to introduce competitively priced small and medium-sized electric vans and other products for logistics and on-demand ride-hailing and shuttle service companies.
The companies were said to have contracted Arrival to help them produce these vehicles so as to meet the rapidly growing demand in Europe for cleaner commercial vehicles and accelerate the companies’ transformation from carmakers to clean mobility providers.
According to Hyundai, the partnership would also enable it to accelerate its strategy to deliver electric battery and hydrogen fuel cell solutions for the commercial vehicle market in Europe.
Speaking on the development, the Hyundai Motor Group President and Head of Research and Development Division Albert Biermann said the joint development would enable the company to compete effectively in the global eco-friendly vehicle market.
“The eco-friendly vehicle market in Europe is expected to grow rapidly due to the introduction of further environmental regulations. Through the joint development of electric commercial vehicles with Arrival, we will be able to gain a competitive advantage and progressively establish our leadership in the global eco-friendly vehicle market, with Europe at the forefront,” Biermann said.
Arrival, Which was Founded in 2015, has production plants and research and development centres in the US, Germany, Singapore, Russia and the UK.
