Travel / FULL LIST: Countries Accepting Nigerian Masters Students With Dependants. by AmazingGenius: 5:11pm On May 06
The United Kingdom (UK) on Sunday said only international students coming in for their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies are eligible to bring in dependents to the country.

Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

He said that the educational system policy changed earlier this year for international students in higher education not to bring dependents into the UK was to curb the increase of foreign students bringing in dependents.

He explained that the huge surge in dependence was putting an unsustainable pressure on many universities, adding that it was the reason these changes were introduced.

Here are eight countries Nigerian Masters students can move to with their dependants

1. Canada

Canada aims to welcome over 460,000 new immigrants each year to strengthen the economy, reunite families, and help refugees.

Under its immigration levels plan, Canada is now looking to get 465,000 new permanent residents in 2023, 485,000 in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025

The country’s dependent visa allows international students to bring their dependents and also allows them to work or study full-time once they have the relevant permits.

2. Germany

Germany’s dependent visa also known as a family reunion visa permits the spouse, children, and other family members to join and live with their family members residing in Germany. They can either reside temporarily or permanently in the country.

3. New Zealand

New Zealand also has a dependent child student visa that allows a dependent child to join their parents in the country and study at a primary or secondary school. “A dependent child can be treated as a domestic student, which means you don’t have to pay tuition fees for them to go to school.”

To apply for a Dependent Child Resident visa, your children must be single and financially dependent on you. Your children must sign a declaration they are single when they complete their application form. Immigration New Zealand considers your children dependent if they are: 17 or younger.

4. australia

An australia-dependent visa allows dependent family members of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live and work in australia. This includes spouses, children, and other eligible family members.

5. Denmark

If an international student wants to bring their family to Denmark, they must apply for a green card Dependent visa. It allows Danish green card holder to bring their family with them to the nation while they are living and working there.

Denmark has several categories of dependent visas. Of these dependent visas, the Student Dependent Visa is designed for the spouse or unmarried children below 18 years of age of foreigners schooling in the country with a Denmark student visa to join their relatives in Denmark.

6. Finland

In September 2022, Finland issued more residence permits compared to the previous year as its processing time for visa application was 77 days on average, about 46 per cent less compared to 143 days in the previous period, the Finnish Immigration Service revealed.

The D visa allows you to travel to Finland immediately after being issued with a residence permit.

You can apply for a D visa if your spouse or your parent or guardian is applying for one of the following residence permits: A residence permit for a specialist. EU Blue Card.

7. Estonia

While staying in Estonia with a student visa, your family members can apply for an Estonia family visa to join you.

If they are issued a family visa, they can stay with you in Estonia for one year.

8. Sweden

Sweden is a Scandinavian nation in northern Europe with thousands of coastal islands and inland lakes, along with vast boreal forests and glaciated mountains.

The country which is highly developed, is ranked seventh in the Human Development Index, according to United Nations Development.

It has different types of permits that allow people to bring their dependents. The type of permit that should be applied for will vary depending on the situation of the person who is living in the country.

Nairaland / General / Father's Day 2024: Origin, History And Everything You Should Know About This Day by Abaga001: 11:23am On May 06
Father’s Day, marking Sunday, June 16, 2024, is approaching fast! Delve into inspiring quotes for your card, explore delightful recipes, and discover engaging activities to celebrate. Uncover the touching tale behind the creation of Father’s Day, a story filled with significance and emotion.

Why We Celebrate Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating and honoring the invaluable contributions of men who have embraced the vital role of fatherhood. It’s a day to express gratitude towards fathers and father figures, including uncles and grandfathers, for the sacrifices they make, their commitment to nurturing and guiding children, and their unwavering devotion to their families.

When is Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is observed every year on the third Sunday of June in various countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, and several others globally.

2025- Sunday, June 15

2026- Sunday, June 21

2027- Sunday, June 20

Many countries celebrate this holiday at other times of the year. In australia, for example, Father’s Day is held on the first Sunday of September; in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, on the second Sunday in November; and in some Catholic countries, on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day).

Who “Invented” Father’s Day?

Much like the origins of Mother’s Day, the history of Father’s Day in America extends far beyond just cards and gifts.

The inaugural Father’s Day observance took place in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, following a devastating mining accident that claimed the lives of hundreds of men.

Education / Prof Shola Omotola's 50years Legacy In Social Activism An Community Development by NationalReports: 12:37am On May 06
The gift of eruditi or sapientialism isn’t something one generally comes in contact with especially in the swelling number of academics in circulation these days, regardless of the abuse of the word erudite this or that in the academics, that word is overemphasized and wrongly used oftentimes. This is because of the growing impatience to learn, read, and progress academically via the proper channel; also, it can be because of the dwindling standards of our education. It is pertinent to say that what you don’t have, you may not be able to give except if you rob Peter to pay Paul. Sadly, this is the case in our academic environment today.

As much as the word erudite should be sparsely used, one can not take away the fact that we still have great and erudite academics. We have great teachers, tutors and lecturers. Succinct to say that we have erudite professors in the different fields of the academics. So, even with the toxic, drab and under-funded educational environment of our nation, Nigeria is blessed, Kogi State is blessed, Okun land is profoundly blessed with great and erudite scholars.

In this line and at the risk ot sounding proud, misuse of words, over-patronizing a man who loves his quiet space, or deodorizing the facts on paper; Professor Shola Omotola ranked among those we can beat our chests to call an erudite Professor and scholar!

Journey with me on this short and hurriedly put-together tribute to a man of academic exploits and conquest, a man with a humble background and also a man that matches his words with his actions, which has given rise to his numerous achievements in life; The Professor Shola Omotola, AKA Unbeatable.

Professor Shola Omotola is a name familiar to many, particularly in academic circles. Renowned for his intelligence and versatility in politics, he is a respected figure in the field of political science. His primary areas of expertise include Comparative Politics, Elections, Governance, And Democratization.

His vast knowledge in Political Science undoubtedly earned him the moniker "Unbeatable", the name he's widely known for and called by his colleagues and even people that are outside academics. Professor Omotola has established himself as a leading figure in research. His reputation transcends borders, as he is recognized not only in Nigeria but also globally for his scholarly contributions to Education.

When he announced to me his 50th birthday anniversary, I was like wow, so, Prof is just 50? With this level of intelligence, achievements, and academic excellence? Prof is a silent achiever whose achievements can deceive someone into thinking that he is already 70! A young man who has traveled far and near within such a short period deserves a medal.

Early Beginnings and Inspiration

Prof. Shola Omotola's journey started from Ekinrin-Adde where he was raised as a young man from a humble background. It is not uncommon for individuals from average backgrounds to envision themselves following in their parent's footsteps, especially individuals who were raised in the agrarian, so, I'm sure that Prof. accumulated so much experience going to the farm to work for his parents; this is undoubtedly where the seed of hard work and determination to succeed were sown. As he began to work on the farm, he learned the values of hard work, compassion and patience.

His thirst for education and success led him beyond the farm. Starting from primary school, he progressed to secondary school, graduating as the senior prefect. He proceeded to the University of Ilorin where he finally evolved into becoming unbeatable. At the varsity, he mixed extracurricular activities with academics; where he contested as an honorable member of his Department's Students Representative Council (SRC) where I'm fortunate to be a member presently. As if that was not enough, he came back home and contested for Director of Social (DOS)as a member of the Ekinrin-Adde Student Union. His knowledge and versatility in activism/Unionism have passed the test of time, and even today, he continues to advocate for a better Nigeria. He's indeed, a Comrade who has refused to retire from activism.

At the University of Ilorin, he switched from being an Honorable member of the Students Representative Council to the Central Executive Council where he contested for the President of the National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS) and won. His story is of a man who is courageous enough to get whatever he wants at every attempt.

At home in Ekinrin Adde, when his tenure as the Director of Social elapsed, he contested for the Union's President and also won. So, he was a President at home and President away! It is so surprising how he did all that and still came up as the overall best student in his department. Mathew 7: 7-8 says “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened". It seems to me that Prof. made use of this Bible verse in those days. He knocked continuously and the doors were opened simultaneously, so. It can only be God!

Community Recognition

Prof. Shola Omotola is a distinguished son of the Ekinrin-Adde community who is widely recognized for his excellence and achievements. His unwavering contributions to community development have added to his credentials of achievements thereby making him suitable to be at the forefront of eminent sons of the community. Although Ekinrin Adde is a fast-growing community that houses successful men and women who have made their marks in different fields, Prof. Shola Omotola is undoubtedly a Primus Inter Pares when making a selection in the academic. He was Inducted into Omo-Atata Hall of Fame by His Royal Majesty, the Olu Adde of Ekinrin Adde, Olu Anthony Bamigbaiye Idowu ( The Ahemworo first And Commander of the Order of Naija) Prof was a pioneer member of the inductees. According to the organizers of the program "Omo-Atata Hall of Fame is the highest Honour given to the Sons and Daughters of Ekinrin Adde who have made their marks in their chosen careers and who have as well done the community proud in terms of participating in the course of community development. so, before anyone can be Inducted into this Hall, he must have met these requirements. Remember Prof. Is a pioneer member; that underscores how important he is in the community.

Prof served as the National Publicity Secretary of Ekinrin-Adde Community Development Association (EACDA) the apex community social cultural group. One thing that is interesting about Prof. is his readiness to serve. He can serve in this position today and hold another one tomorrow. He's so flexible, adaptive, and multi-talented!

Academic Advocacy/Achievements

Although not a lawyer, Prof. is a senior advocate of a better Nigeria. Whenever he has the opportunity to address the people, he will always advocate for the democratization of the Nigerian institutions and the standardization of the country's Education system. Since his area of research is on election and Democracy, he always makes use of every opportunity to conduct empirical inquiries into the defects in the electoral system of the country and he always provides sustainable solutions to the problems. In his recent presentation at a retreat organized by the Senate press corps at Keffi in Nasarawa State on Monday 29th of April, Prof. was quoted to have told the journalists to "Speak truth to power". According to him, before development can flow in a democratic government, journalists must own up to their onuses as the watchdog by speaking truth to power. Delivering a paper on The Developmental Impact of The Executive on Nigerians from 1999-2024, Prof. stated that if the executive seems weak, the legislature should perform its "oversight function".

He categorically stated that the Tinubu government hastily removed the subsidy without putting in place measures to cushion the effect of the removal. He said “No one is laughing apart from my Senator here. No professor in the university today can afford a car. You have a wife and three children, your salary cannot buy you a car now unless you have other sources of income to augment.

"The government removed fuel subsidy without prior measures to cushion the effect. So many families have disintegrated. You removed the fuel subsidy and now you are removing (subsidy) on electricity, but the salary of the professor remains the same.”

Prof. is such a fearless man whose voice is like a sword that pierces into the flesh of those who have sucked the country and left it shattered. As a lecturer with over two decades of lecturing experience, he has authored and co-authored several books that have sought to address the menace in Nigeria's political system. These are a few of his books; The Political Economy of Kidnapping And Insecurity In Nigeria. Nigeria's 2015 General Election; Continuity And Change In Electoral Democracy. Horror In Paradise; Framework For Understanding The Crises of The Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The Troubled Trinity; Elections, Democracy And Development In Nigeria.

As the pioneer Head of the Department (HOD) of Political Science at the Federal University Oye, (FUOYE) in Ekiti state, Prof. delivered a captivating 3rd Inaugural lecture titled; The Troubled Trinity; Elections, Democracy And Development In Nigeria, where he extensively discussed the importance of Free and Fair Elections in a Democratic System of Government and how Democracy can engender meaningful development. Prof. happens to be the first lecturer to have delivered an inaugural speech in the whole faculty of social sciences of FUOYE. All these feats are rare and can only be achieved by someone who has dared to be great.

Prof. has traveled all over the world and has had encounters with some notable institutions like; The Electoral Integrity Project (EIP), USA/australia/Canada, where he was appointed and served as the only African on its International Advisory Board. The African Peacebuilding Network (APN). Social Science Research Council (SSRC), New York, USA. Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS), University of Bayreuth, Germany where he served as a Visiting Professor in 2017. Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Department of International Relations, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he earned the African Residency Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 2013. International African Institute (IAI), Rome, Italy. South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Johannesburg. Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA). If I'm going to keep listing the various local and international institutions Prof. Has had an engagement with, this write-up is going to be too bulky and boring but you can download his Inaugural lecture mentioned above and see yourself.

Indeed, Prof. has lived a life of impact, and success, and has achieved a lot for himself. His legacy of excellence endures. It takes a lot of commitment for someone to achieve all this within their 50 years on earth; such a man could be called either phenomenal or unbeatable. Here's to 50 years of peace of mind, good health, and strength to keep standing tall. Happy birthday to a phenomenal individual.

Temibi Samuel is an undergraduate of Political Science, University of Ilorin. He Writes from Akogba Mountain in Ekinrin Adde.

Politics / Tinubu + All Corrupt Nigerian Politicians Are Guilty Of Crimes Against Humanity by Ilekokonit: 10:42pm On May 05
Reproduced below are the 2 petitions I started online and on Nairaland in 2020 calling for Tinubu and all Corrupt Nigerian Politicians to be declared as guilty of Crimes Against Humanity because of their corruption.

My 2020 Nairaland post in the link below got only one comment whilst my 2 Petitions that I started also in 2020 at the below 2 sites got only 2 and 1 comment respectively ??

Maybe Nigerians will take their future financial well being more serious in 2024 with the turn of events in Nigeria. Just maybe 'cos repeatedly trying to sensitize Nigerians to the fact that our Politicians are looting us into oblivion is a tiring task especially as we still have some people defending Tinubu The looter in Chief currently occupying Aso Rock courtesy of the money he looted and continues to loot from the Treasury of Lagos state for the past 25 years and as long as the common man in Nigeria can still defend the Criminal Looter called Tinubu, then the future for the common man in Nigeria looks VERY BLEAK 'cos Tinubu holds no prisoners when it comes to Looting ANY Treasury.

Below is my 2020 Petition and it is still open for signatures :-

Tinubu and all Corrupt Nigerian Politicians are guilty of Crimes Against Humanity

What crime against humanity is worse than for Corrupt Nigerian Politicians to STEAL the money meant to look after sick children, severely disabled people, the mentally ill, the old people and the poor and divert the money in billions of dollars into their private pockets and that of their family members, fronts, cronies and associates ?

This is a form of economic genocide against the poor and down trodden by Corrupt Nigerian Politicians.

Please sign the petitions online to declare all Corrupt Nigerian Politicians as guilty of Crimes Against Humanity at the 2 websites below :-

Foreign Affairs / Japan, India Reject Biden's Comments Describing Countries As Xenophobic by God1000(m): 9:24am On May 05

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHEdkj2xyes

Japan and India on Saturday decried remarks by U.S. President Joe Biden describing them as "xenophobic" countries that do not welcome immigrants, which the president said during a campaign fundraising event earlier in the week. Japan said Biden's judgment was not based on an accurate understanding of its policy, while India rebutted the comment, defending itself as the world's most open society.

Biden grouped Japan and India as "xenophobic" countries, along with Russia and China as he tried to explain their struggling economies, contrasting the four with the strength of the U.S. as a nation of immigrants. Japan is a key U.S. ally, and both Japan and India are part of the Quad, a U.S.-led informal partnership that also includes australia in countering increasingly assertive China in the Indo-Pacific.

Business / Illuminating Adelaide: An Extensive Guide To The City's Premier Lighting Stores by melvinlee: 7:31am On May 05
Nestled along the southern coast of australia, Adelaide is a hub of cultural richness, historical significance, and a thriving contemporary design scene. Among the city's many aesthetic offerings, its specialty lighting stores stand out, providing both homeowners and professional designers with a plethora of lighting options that can transform any space. This detailed guide delves into the diverse range of lighting stores across Adelaide, exploring everything from vintage and retro fixtures to cutting-edge, energy-efficient designs.

The Allure of Vintage: Exploring Retro and Antique Lighting Stores
Adelaide’s affection for the past is prominently displayed in its numerous antique lighting stores. These establishments, such as the famed 'Timeless Designs', offer more than just lighting solutions; they offer a piece of history. Each chandelier, lamp, and sconce comes with its own story, often sourced from old mansions, estates, and dismantled historical buildings. These stores provide an array of styles from Victorian to Art Deco, each piece meticulously restored to its original glory or repurposed to fit modern wiring standards, making them not only beautiful but also functional pieces of art.

The Modern Lighting Revolution: Contemporary Lighting Solutions
In contrast to the nostalgic charm of vintage lights, Adelaide is also home to several ultramodern lighting stores like 'Luxe Lighting'. These establishments are at the forefront of the lighting design industry, offering innovative fixtures that incorporate the latest in lighting technology and design trends. The products range from sleek, minimalistic LED setups to complex, sculptural pieces that double as contemporary art. These stores often collaborate with internationally recognized designers to create exclusive collections that can be found only in Adelaide, making each visit a unique exploration into the future of interior and architectural lighting.

Green Lighting: Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Practices
Environmental sustainability is a major concern in today’s market, and Adelaide’s lighting stores are not left behind. Eco-conscious stores like 'Green Glow' specialize in products that minimize environmental impact. They offer a range of LED lights known for their low energy consumption and long lifespan, as well as fixtures made from recycled or sustainable materials. These stores appeal to a growing demographic of consumers who seek to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining a high standard of design and functionality in their lighting choices.
Specialty Lighting for Every Corner: Task, Accent, and Ambient Solutions
Recognizing the diverse needs of different spaces, some Adelaide lighting stores specialize in specific types of lighting. 'Illumina Specialty' is a prime example, providing targeted solutions for every area of the home or business. From waterproof lighting fixtures designed for bathrooms and outdoor spaces to sophisticated pendant lights that create focal points over dining areas, these stores offer customized solutions that enhance both the utility and aesthetics of a space.

Bespoke Creations: Custom Lighting Design Services
For those with specific visions, custom lighting design services are available. Stores like 'Bespoke Lights Adelaide' allow customers to collaborate directly with designers to create unique lighting fixtures tailored to individual spaces and styles. This process often involves selecting materials, dimensions, and light sources, resulting in a one-of-a-kind product that perfectly complements its intended environment.
Beyond Sales: Educational Workshops and Professional Consultations
Many of Adelaide's lighting stores offer more than just sales; they provide learning opportunities and expert advice through workshops and consultations. These services help customers understand the complexities of lighting design, such as how to balance aesthetic appeal with functional lighting requirements, or how to retrofit antique lighting fixtures with modern technology without compromising their historical integrity.

Suburban Treasures: Exploring Beyond the City Center
Venturing beyond Adelaide's central business district can be rewarding as the suburbs offer hidden gems with expansive showrooms and potentially lower prices. These stores often feature larger selections and more competitive deals, making them worth the exploration for savvy shoppers looking for the best in lighting solutions.

Digital Convenience: Online Catalogues and E-commerce
Reflecting modern shopping trends, many of Adelaide's lighting stores have embraced the digital era, offering comprehensive online catalogues and e-commerce platforms. Websites like 'Adelaide Lighting Online' provide detailed product descriptions, customer reviews, and high-resolution photos, allowing consumers to conveniently explore options, compare prices, and make purchases online. Many stores also offer delivery services and online customer support to enhance the shopping experience.

Supporting Local Artists and Craftsmen
In a bid to support local talent and craftsmanship, several lighting stores in Adelaide collaborate with local artists and craftsmen to offer unique, handcrafted lighting fixtures. These collaborations often result in exclusive, limited-edition pieces that are available only in specific stores, adding a local flavor to the global design trends dominating the market. Stores like 'Artisan Lightworks' showcase these collaborations, promoting South Australian artistry by incorporating indigenous materials and traditional techniques. This not only helps preserve the local craft but also provides customers with truly unique products that carry a story and heritage.

The Role of Lighting in Architectural Integrity
Adelaide's rich architectural heritage plays a significant role in the design choices offered by its lighting stores. From the ornate Victorian homes in North Adelaide to the modernist mid-century buildings in the suburbs, the city's architecture demands a thoughtful approach to lighting. Specialist stores such as 'Heritage Lighting Gallery' focus on providing solutions that enhance the architectural integrity of these buildings. They offer consultations and site visits to ensure that the lighting fixtures not only illuminate but also respect and highlight the historical and architectural significance of each space. This careful consideration ensures that lighting is not just installed but integrated into the living history of Adelaide’s diverse buildings.

The lighting stores Adelaide offer a rich tapestry of options that reflect the city's diverse architectural styles and design preferences. From historical restorations to avant-garde innovations, these establishments cater to all tastes and needs, ensuring that every space can be perfectly illuminated. Whether you seek a statement piece to complement your living room or an energy-efficient solution for your new office, Adelaide’s lighting stores provide unparalleled variety and expertise. If you’re a qualified teacher from outside the UK, you can work as a teacher in England for up to 4 years without QTS.

After that, you’ll need QTS to teach in many schools in England. Although it’s not a legal requirement in all types of schools (for example, academies, free schools and private schools), you’ll find it easier to get a teaching job in England if you have QTS.

This guidance explains how to apply for QTS if you qualified to teach or have gained teaching experience outside the UK.

Learn how to apply for QTS if you trained to teach in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Teachers in England are employed by individual schools, not by the Department for Education. If you decide to apply for QTS, you’ll have to apply for your teaching job and your visa separately.

Get Into Teaching offers information and advice on becoming a teacher in England.
Routes to QTS

There are 4 routes to qualified teacher status for teachers and trainees outside the UK:

apply for QTS in England using our professional recognition service
apply for assessment only QTS
apply for teacher training in England
apply to train for international qualified teacher status (iQTS)

Your eligibility for each route will depend on:

where you qualified
your subject specialism
whether you already have teaching experience
your personal circumstances

Apply for QTS in England

Depending on where you qualified, the subject you teach and your qualifications, you may be able to use the Department for Education’s professional recognition service, Apply for QTS in England.

To get QTS, you must meet strict mandatory requirements fully, exactly as they are set out in awarding qualified teacher status to overseas teachers.

It’s important to note that an award of QTS does not lead to a teaching job or visa. You will need to apply for teaching jobs and visas separately. There are a small number of schools in England that sponsor visas.

When you apply for QTS in England, you do not need to:

pay a fee to a training provider
undergo any further training
visit the UK

If you have a teaching qualification from any of the following countries or regions, you can use the Apply for QTS in England service if you meet the requirements:

australia
Canada
the European Economic Area
Gibraltar
Guernsey
Hong Kong
Jersey
New Zealand
Northern Ireland
Scotland
Switzerland
Ukraine
the USA

If you have a subject specialism in languages, mathematics or science and a qualification to teach 11- to 16-year-olds from one of the following countries, you can use the Apply for QTS in England service if you meet the requirements:

Ghana
India
Jamaica
Nigeria
Singapore
South Africa

Visit awarding qualified teacher status to overseas teachers to check the eligibility criteria and apply for QTS in England.
Apply for assessment only QTS

If you’re not eligible to apply for QTS using the Apply for QTS in England service, assessment only QTS may be the most appropriate route for you.

Assessment only QTS means experienced teachers with a degree can gain QTS without doing a teacher training programme. You can apply to a UK government-approved teacher training provider in England for an assessment showing you meet the standards for QTS.

You do not need to visit the UK to be assessed and gain QTS. However, you’ll need to be assessed at your place of work by an examiner from your teaching training provider. The teacher training provider can explain what type of school you must be working in to undergo assessment only QTS.

When you apply for assessment only QTS you’ll:

have to pay a fee to a training provider
not have to undergo any further training
not have to visit the UK (unless you’re already working in England under the 4-year rule)

Assessment only costs

Fees range from about £1,500 to £4,000, but vary between providers and may be substantially more if you’re outside the UK. Check with individual providers for more details.
Working as a teacher in England while you undergo assessment only QTS

Although many schools in England prefer applicants for teaching jobs to have QTS, it is possible to work as a teacher in England and earn a salary while you’re being assessed for QTS.

The 4-year rule allows you to work without QTS. It means that, if you are successful in finding a teaching job in England without having QTS, you can apply to a teacher training provider offering assessment only QTS in the region of England where you work.

Assessment only training providers cannot give you advice about:

finding a teaching job in an English school
other routes to QTS
applying for a visa to work or study in the UK

Qualifications and experience you’ll need to be eligible for an assessment only QTS

To apply for assessment only QTS, you do not need a formal teacher training qualification.

However, you must have:

a minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience
a first (bachelor’s) degree from a UK or non-UK university
an English language qualification that is the same standard as a grade 4 GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)
a maths qualification that is the same standard as a grade 4 GCSE
to teach children aged 3 to 11 in primary school, a physics, chemistry or biology (science) qualification that is the same standard as a grade 4 GCSE

Politics / The Billionaire Police Commissioner* By Olusegun Adeniyi by Darevofpeace(m): 2:35pm On May 03
May 2, 2024

“That a serving police officer would openly admit to being a billionaire resulting from running a curious business while still in uniform confirms the lack of accountability that defines public conduct in our country today. Yet, as I have also repeatedly stated on this page, when you run a system where there are no consequences for bad behaviour, it becomes easy for those who ordinarily should uphold the law to also become outlaws. Unfortunately, that is where we are in Nigeria today!”
Mr Aderemi Adeoye retired yesterday as the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Anambra State. By his own admission, his net worth is now N20 billion! And he has set his eyes on displacing Alhaji Aliko Dangote as the richest man in Africa within the next ten years. I am also quoting him. “I have been privileged to be trained in Ghana, England, Israel, California and more. I have served abroad in the United Nations, and this career gave me opportunities for self-development, and these have prepared me for retirement,” Adeoye admitted during his ceremonial pull out parade from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Awka last weekend. “In 2018, I founded an investment club, Alpha Trust Investment Club (ATIC) Limited. We started it with a modest sum of N54 million, but today we have investments worth over N20 billion. That will be my full-time business from Wednesday, May 1 (yesterday). We have been investing and now we want to go into full time business. And we will in the next 10 years give Dangote a run for his money.”

Let me be upfront here. I do not agree with those who find virtue in the kind of ‘poverty’ fables that propelled former President Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015. So, I am not opposed to legitimate ‘side hustles’ without which it is difficult for professionals to stay afloat in Nigeria. But there is a problem when public officials acquire stupendous wealth that is impossible to explain and then make a show of it. Therefore, to know more about this multibillion Naira company whose promoter seeks to displace Dangote on the ‘Forbes List’, I first conducted a search at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) where I drew blank. I am surprised that a business concern with a portfolio of N20 billion is not listed at the CAC. Then I did a Google search. My findings were shocking.

In February this year, some people had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, asking him to investigate an alleged fraudulent diversion of over N20 billion funds by Adeoye. In the petition, dated 30 January 2024 and signed by 33 members—including Diasporan Nigerians resident in the United States, Canada, australia and the United Kingdom—they alleged that Adeoye has been using his uniform to operate what they described as a Ponzi Scheme. “Sometime around 2017, we became ‘friends’ with Mr Adeoye on Facebook. At the time, he was serving in the African Union on secondment from Nigeria. He endeared himself to us and many others by projecting himself as a champion for victims of fraud and an upright man,” they wrote. “Often, he claimed to have come to the aid of persons who had been defrauded on Facebook. He got many accolades from many of us for these claims. As time will show, these claims were deliberate and well-planned effort by him to win the trust of many of us on Facebook as a precursor to launching his grand scheme.”

In 2018, according to the petitioners, Adeoye “proposed an investment club on Facebook, named Alpha Trust Investment Club (ATIC), aiming to pool funds for diversified investments, including joint property purchases. The idea gained traction due to Mr. Adeoye’s credibility as a senior police officer. Trust was high, leading to initial payments directly to his personal account. ATIC was later formally established under the Corporate and Allied Matters Act, growing to over 1,400 members by 2023.”

However, according to the petitioners, what is now happening “Centers on a lack of accountability, lack of proper structure, gross abuse of powers, intimidation, arbitrary punitive actions against members, negligence of duty, and a failure to adhere to regulatory requirements. All of these have cost members dearly.” After listing nine accounts domiciled in GTBank to which monies are paid with Adeoye as sole administrator, they demanded that he “be compelled to disengage from running the investments with immediate effect, with an undertaking not to touch or deal in any assets belonging to the Club, since his involvement in the scheme, and dealing in the business as a public servant, in the first place, is prima facially (sic) illegal ab initio and as a matter of law.”

There is nothing on record to suggest that Egbetokun acted on the petition. But a few weeks ago, PUNCH newspaper interviewed Adeoye who described the claims by those petitioners as “criminal defamation of character”. These were his words: “They are our members and started fomenting trouble. In the course of this, they issued threats. Someone who issues threats to others is a criminal. The person they want to haunt down is the largest shareholder, who has 11 million shares. If something is wrong with the finances, who is the first to know? What they are doing now is criminal defamation of character. When you defame a person criminally, that is a crime. The Board of Trustees met and expelled them; after they were expelled, they labelled the club Ponzi.

“We bought land as a cooperative. And we have one document for it in the name of the cooperative for each purchase. Am I supposed to tear the document into pieces and then begin to share them? We are an online investment platform. We published all the receipts and payments on our page, and every member sees them. We have created a lounge to process their settlement. We are writing to the developer to remove the parts of the bulk purchase for them and issue documents to them in their names. Developers charge 10% of the current value of the land for that. We are not asking them to pay us. They should pay directly to the developer. We will only certify them as our members for the process.”

I am still trying to process what this company is about. But there are even more critical questions that beg for answers. How can a Police Commissioner establish a ‘business’, ask the public to contribute funds that would generate returns, use his private accounts to receive such funds and claim ownership of the pool of money contributed by ‘shareholders’, after allocating 11 million shares to himself? And how could Adeoye have been diligent in his work as a law enforcement officer if he spent considerable time chasing money from people whose backgrounds he had no idea of—including those who could be criminals? Are there no regulations within the police that frown at a serving officer establishing and running a business venture, especially of this nature? Are police officers exempted from the code of conduct for public officials in Nigeria?

On Monday, there was an online post titled, ‘The audacious billionaire cop’ credited to a Mr Dauda Adesina Joki-Lasisi, a retired police officer. Joki-Lasisi (who claimed to have started his career in 1988 as a cadet inspector after training at the Police Academy in Kano) drew from his own moral examples and that of many others in the NPF to argue that money making is incompatible with the work of a law enforcement officer. He concluded his treatise with several posers. “In a service where the pension of a retired CP is not up to a N100K, what message was CP Adeoye sending to those still in service? Was it for them to embark on a rabid pursuit of money at all costs in order to secure their post-service life? And in that case, how wouldn’t these officers then compromise the sacred policing ethics by monetizing their services to the detriment of the masses and the security of the nation?” Joki-Lasisi asked. “I think retiring senior officers need to now be compelled to submit their valedictory addresses to the police authorities for vetting and possible censorship of any damaging content thereof, in order to prevent the recurrence of an embarrassing absurdity of this nature.”

I wish Adeoye well as he retires to the stupendous wealth that he has amassed for himself. But like Joki-Lasisi, I also believe that the NPF should be concerned about the reputational damage of his audacious disclosure. In my August 2021 column, ‘Beyond Abba Kyari’s Indictment’, I addressed a similar issue that borders on ethics in the police. The intervention followed the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indictment of a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) then touted as a ‘Super Cop’. “By charging Kyari to their court, asking for his arrest, and placing emphasis on the fact that ‘he is a highly decorated deputy commissioner of the Nigeria Police Force …’, the FBI was implicitly making a connection between criminality and law enforcement in our country,” I wrote in the column. “There are lessons in this tragedy that should not be lost on the authorities in our country. Having allowed the police to degenerate as an institution, it is little surprise that many of their personnel now embody the worst vices of society.”

That a serving police officer would openly admit to being a billionaire resulting from running a curious business while still in uniform confirms the lack of accountability that defines public conduct in our country today. Yet, as I have also repeatedly stated on this page, when you run a system where there are no consequences for bad behaviour, it becomes easy for those who ordinarily should uphold the law to also become outlaws. Unfortunately, that is where we are in Nigeria today! *I actually didn't want to make comment on this very heart rending and total disgrace issue regarding the Nigeria Police. But, I'll still say; it's one of the shameful aspect of today's Nigeria Police that has gone a long way in the destruction of the Nigeria Police Force. Very unfortunate.*😭😱

Foreign Affairs / More Than 2,000 Pro-Palestinian Protesters Arrested Across US Campuses by socialmediaman: 1:20pm On May 03
More than 2,000 people have now been arrested during pro-Palestinian protests across dozens of US college campuses in recent weeks.

Police arrested more than 300 pro-Palestinian demonstrators on college campuses on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, pushing the total past 2,000, according to an Associated Press tally.

More than 200 students were arrested at the University of California, Los Angeles, as police cleared a fortified encampment, and more than 90 students were arrested at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

Dozens more were arrested at the University of New Hampshire and at the University of Buffalo. In Oregon, police moved into the school’s library on Thursday, which has been occupied by demonstrators since Monday.

We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent,” said Joe Biden. “But,” he continued, “order must prevail.”

Violent protest is not protected – peaceful protest is,” he said. Biden criticized what he called “violent” protests.

“Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations – none of this is a peaceful protest,” Biden said in a brief statement on Thursday morning.

“There’s the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos,” the US president said. In response to a reporter’s question, he said he did not think it was the right time to call the national guard.

In a Thursday report, the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project said that although some clashes have broken out, “the overwhelming majority [of protests] – 99% – have remained peaceful”.

The protests are part of a movement to force schools to divest from businesses that support the war in Gaza, and they reflect how the war has become a major flashpoint in US politics. More than 34,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began a campaign to dismantle Hamas, the Gaza health ministry has said. More people in Gaza have been thrust into near starvation, as Israel has limited food aid to the area.

On 7 October, Hamas killed more than 1,200 people and took roughly 250 hostages in an attack on Israel. Since the campaign against Hamas began, the US has provided substantial military support to Israel, including most recently in a $15bn aid package.

Student protests have grown across the country since an encampment sprang up at Columbia University in New York in mid-April. In many cases, faculty members have joined or supported student protesters, as police and universities have responded with force to demonstrations that threaten to continue into commencement season. Hundreds have been arrested in the weeks since the protests began.

Police cleared out a protest camp at UCLA in the early hours of Thursday, and arrested at least 200 demonstrators. The police operation followed a brutal hours-long attack on the encampment on Tuesday night by masked “instigators” who came to campus and assaulted students with projectiles and chemical agents, while campus security and police retreated or stood by without intervening.

At least 1,000 people gathered on UCLA’s campus late on Wednesday night, before police moved in, tearing down plywood and pallets that protesters had used to reinforce their encampment. Students described again being attacked with projectiles, fireworks and chemical agents. The chaotic operation lasted into the early hours of the morning.

By late Thursday morning, the campus had largely quieted down. The UCLA student newspaper the Daily Bruin posted pictures on social media of a campus building scrawled with graffiti saying, “Free Palestine” and “Bleep Israel”.

In New York, legal aid attorneys said they were still fighting to have protesters released more than 24 hours after they were first detained – many of whom were only charged with minor offenses and, attorneys said, should have never been arrested in the first place.

“Many protesters who were arrested earlier this week and arraigned last night were ultimately charged with criminal trespass, a low-level offense, and at that point, they should have been immediately released from custody,” said Tina Luongo, Legal Aid Society chief criminal defense practice attorney.

At Dartmouth, where an encampment had only recently sprung up, a professor said the university responded with “full force”, and posted a video of a white-haired colleague being grabbed and dragged away by police.

“In the hour or so it was allowed to exist, this was the model of a peaceful, inclusive protest,” Jeff Sharlet, a professor at Dartmouth, told the Washington Post. “They obstructed nothing; disrupted nothing; menaced nobody; and neither used nor displayed hate speech.”

The chaotic scenes at UCLA came after New York police burst into a building occupied by anti-war protesters at Columbia on Tuesday night, breaking up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school.

By Wednesday, a scrum had also broken out at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, after police with shields removed all but one tent and shoved protesters. Four officers were injured, including a state trooper who was hit in the head with a skateboard, authorities said. Four were charged with battering law enforcement.

In one rare example of authorities de-escalating protests, Brown University in Rhode Island agreed to a divestment vote in October – apparently the first US college to agree to such a demand.

Authorities have also made arrests and cleared protest encampments at City College, Fordham University and Stony Brook College in New York; Portland State in Oregon; Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff; Tulane University in New Orleans; and the University of Texas, Dallas.

Student protests have also sprung up in Canada, the United Kingdom and australia.

Business / What Are My Options If My Sydney Backyard Is Small But I Want A Pool? by paladinservices: 7:44am On May 03
Pools are for fun, relaxation, and comfort!

However, not all homeowners can enjoy the benefits that a pool provides, especially those with smaller backyards in Sydney.

Given that small-sized backyards have almost become a trend, people who want a pool in their small backyard may wonder if they will ever be able to make their dream come true.

So, if you are a homeowner looking for a residential pool installation service in Sydney, our post will help you understand the best options for your small Sydney backyard.

Well, first of all, we want to let you know that it is possible to install a swimming pool even in the modest of spaces. All you need to do is get in touch with an accredited pool installation company in Sydney and they will do the rest. They might suggest you go for compact-sized swimming pools that fit your dream and yard perfectly.

Moreover, you can arrange an on-site consultation with your chosen pool-building company to discuss what could be done. Thus, the options are really endless. You just need to have a little separate time.

Is it Possible to Install a Pool in Small Backyards?

The correct answer to this question usually depends on certain factors. These could include local regulations, easements, and setback rules. Local regulations, including easements and setback rules, significantly determine a pool installation in australia.

Easements define areas of your property designated for utility access or other purposes, and these can restrict where you're allowed to build or install structures like pools. Homeowners should check local county records to see if their property has easements that might affect pool installation.

On the other hand, setback rules dictate how close a pool can be to property lines or structures. These rules are often in place to ensure safety, maintain property aesthetics, and prevent potential conflicts with neighbors.

Key Factors for A Small Backyard Swimming Pool
Since you now have quite a fair answer to your question, you might be eager to jump on hiring a residential pool installation service in Sydney. Isn’t it true? Well, if it is, take some steps back, and take some time to reflect on these critical factors:

1. The Overall Space You Have: In addition to adhering to local regulations, this may be the most critical consideration for your small backyard pool.

2. Evaluate the Types of Pools You can Build: It goes without saying that you need to evaluate the types of pools that will work best in a small area. Will you opt for a concrete, vinyl liner, or fiberglass pool? It is vital to explore all the available options at least once to simplify the rest of the process of swimming pool installation in Sydney.

3. Reconsider the Size of Your Pool: Of course, you must take a moment to determine the exact size of your small backyard swimming pool. Suppose you realise that you don't have sufficient space, will you compromise on the size? Think about the size of the pool from different aspects. After all, at the end of the day, it will be the results that matter.

4. Think Again About the Maintenance Part: Last but not least, you should also pay attention to the maintenance part of your pool. You might somehow install a pool, but after that, what’s next? Maintenance will be the key to maintaining a healthy pool year-round. Ensure you will make a list of the things you’ll be doing to upkeep your pool. Also, you must have contact with any expert pool repair in australia to handle your pool maintenance needs.

Small Backyard Pool Ideas for Your Sydney Home

1. Plunge Pool: Install a compact plunge pool that provides a refreshing retreat without taking up too much space.
2. Spa Pool Combo: Consider a spa pool combo that combines a small pool with a relaxing spa area.
3. Narrow Lap Pool: A narrow lap pool runs along the length of your backyard.
4. Corner Pool: Utilize a corner of your backyard to create a small, triangular-shaped pool.
5. Above-Ground Pool: Explore above-ground pool options specifically designed for small spaces.
6. Modular Pool: Choose a modular pool system that allows for flexible configuration and size to accommodate the dimensions of your small backyard.
7. Sunken Pool: Create a sunken pool design that sits slightly below ground level to save space and create a visually striking feature in your backyard.
8. Tropical Oasis: Enhance your small pool area with lush landscaping, palm trees, and tropical plants.
9. Multi-Level Pool: Design a multi-level pool with cascading water features or integrated seating areas.
10. Glass Wall Pool: A glass wall pool will create a seamless connection between your indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Revealed: Why the Naira continues to lose value against the US dollar amid economic woes

By Obinna Ejianya (9News Nigeria - Melbourne, australia)

t is without any doubt that President Tinubu’s government is committed to implementing economic reforms aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians who are already choking to death by the harsh economic hardship that has hitherto engulfed the country.

These stringent reforms by Tinubu’s government have included measures such as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s reshuffles, stricter policies on banks and Bureau de Change operators, interest rate hikes, financial policies, and the promotion of locally-made products. However, the idea of putting the cart before the horse always leads to going nowhere because it takes the horse to move the cart. The economic situation in the country does not require any gymnastics of political correctness, make-believe packaging, or rhetorical economic jargon, but it requires a common-sense, basic approach, as I have been emphasizing in numerous other publications and media interviews.

It is crucial to prioritize and address certain fundamental issues to achieve meaningful progress. One of these issues is the removal of the fuel subsidy, which continues to haunt, hurt, and hinder the Nigerian economy.

Although there are ostensible claims that the government has [Read more on 9News Nigeria] https://9newsng.com/revealed-why-the-naira-continues-to-lose-value-against-the-us-dollar-amid-economic-woes/

Mother’s Day is a special occasion celebrated globally to honor mothers and motherhood. This heartfelt tribute to the maternal bond and the influence of mothers in society varies in date from country to country, but the essence of the day is universally resonant. Here’s an exploration of Mother’s Day, covering its date, history, traditions, and its profound importance.

Date

In many countries, including the United States, Canada, australia, and a majority of European nations, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. However, the date varies worldwide. For example, the United Kingdom celebrates Mother's Day, known as Mothering Sunday, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which typically falls in March or early April. Other variations include Norway, which celebrates on the second Sunday of February, and Thailand, where it is observed on August 12th, the birthday of Queen Sirikit, the mother of the nation.

History

The modern incarnation of Mother's Day began in the early 20th century, though its roots trace back much further in history. Ancient Greeks and Romans held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, the clearest precursor to Mother's Day is the Christian festival known as "Mothering Sunday," which began in the United Kingdom and Europe. Originally a day when the faithful would return to their "mother church" for a special service, over time it transitioned into an occasion for honoring the mothers of children and giving them presents.

The American incarnation of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis conceived Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Ironically, she would later become disillusioned with the commercialization of the day, advocating for it to be removed from the calendar.

Traditions

Traditions of Mother's Day vary, but common practices include giving cards, flowers, and other gifts that signify appreciation and love. Breakfasts in bed, family gatherings, and dinners either at home or at a restaurant are also commonplace. Schools and pre-schools often engage children in making crafts and gifts as a way to show affection, a practice that helps instill the value of giving and expressing love.

In many cultures, Mother's Day is also an occasion for launching initiatives focused on improving the health and welfare of mothers. Charitable activities, awareness campaigns about maternal health, and public speeches are typical events organized to highlight the critical roles mothers play in society.

Importance

The importance of Mother's Day lies in recognizing and appreciating the endless hours of work mothers put into raising children. This day helps to raise awareness of the many challenges involved in motherhood, including social, financial, and emotional challenges. Celebrating Mother’s Day also helps to strengthen familial bonds and can serve as a reminder of the value of family unity.

Reflection

Mother's Day serves not only as an opportunity to express gratitude for our own mothers but also to appreciate all mothers around the world who contribute tirelessly to nurturing the future generations. It's a day that highlights the importance of maternal figures in our lives and encourages reflection on the impact they have had on our personal development and on society at large.

In a broader sense, Mother's Day underlines the need for societal support for mothers everywhere, recognizing their vital role not just in the confines of the home but as fundamental pillars of social stability and growth. Whether it’s through flowers, a meal, or a simple phone call, acknowledging the efforts and sacrifices of mothers is a profound gesture of acknowledgment and respect that enriches our global community.

Politics / Historic Discoveries Of Sunken Continent by coputa(m): 6:45am On May 02
Lakes will be converted into colossal power plants: free electricity in the U.S.
Humanity has reached a milestone: this genetic modification changes everything on our planet
The next imminent threat for our country just confirmed: National security in danger
A historic discovery has just begun to rewrite the geography books. A continent that has lain sunken for years has just come to light – though not to the surface. The most curious thing of all? It has a population of its own and new countries you may never have heard of. It is as curious as this territory that the UN is asking Spain to return and we will never see again.

A continent lost under the sea: the seventh on the planet, and the subject of legends.
There was a time when Oceania, mostly made up of bodies of water and islands, was considered to have emerged from a sunken piece of land. It was between 2020 and 2023 when Zealandia was discovered through satellite measurements, which allowed to draw a spectacular underwater silhouette.

However, Zealandia was identified as a continent in its own right in 2017, after decades of research. It was previously thought to be part of the Australian tectonic plate, but geological studies showed that it has a distinct continental crust.

At 4.9 million km² in area, Zealandia covers 6 % of the planet’s land surface. Despite being mostly submerged, Zealandia is home to two large emerged land masses. These correspond to countries, colonies of European powers (which still exist) and islands.

The location of Zealandia, the lost continent: these are its countries
Zealandia is located in the Pacific Ocean, southeast of australia. It stretches from New Zealand in the south to New Caledonia in the north, covering an area of some 4.9 million square kilometers. Can you imagine how spectacular its underwater mountains must be?

Although most of Zealandia is submerged under the sea, some islands emerge as part of this sunken continent. The main islands are New Zealand, composed of the North and South Islands, as well as the Macquarie, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes, Chatham, Bounty, Snares, and other smaller islands.

Zealandia is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by the Tasman Sea to the west and the Coral Sea to the north. It is separated from australia by the Tasman Sea and from the Antarctic continent by the Ross Sea. Its remote location in the southern hemisphere makes it a unique and isolated region.

The origin of this sunken continent is finally revealed: we have known about it since last year.
Zealandia is believed to have formed some 60-85 million years ago as a result of the breakup of Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent that grouped Africa, South America, Antarctica, australia and India. When Gondwana fractured, Zealandia was isolated.

Then, it began to sink progressively under the ocean due to its lower density with respect to the surrounding oceanic plates. By about 23 million years ago, most of Zealandia was already submerged, with only a few islands and archipelagos remaining emerged.

The sinking continued until it reached its present form, with 94% of its surface under the sea and only New Zealand and New Caledonia visible. Despite being mostly hidden under water, Zealandia maintains its status as a continental landmass.

In terms of relief, Zealandia presents a submerged continental plateau of low altitude, with some submarine ridges and mountains that emerge forming the islands. Of particular note are the Lord Howe Ridge, the Norfolk Ridge and the Challenger Ridge, which contains the deepest point at -10 882 meters.

It is clear that Zealandia is a lost continent, but also enigmatic and beautiful in equal parts: who wouldn’t want to explore its coral-covered atolls, its white sandy beaches blurred with the blue sea or its tropical forests with flora and fauna never seen before in Europe? The most curious thing of all is that it is very close to these territories that Spain lost and will never be able to recover.

Business / Roman Dawidowicz - Palm, Soybean, Rapeseed, And Sunflower Oil Markets by RomanDawidowicz(m): 11:36am On May 01
It’s evident that China is adjusting its sourcing dynamics, favouring Brazil over the US due to favourable pricing trends. Let’s look at the summary of the main veg oil markets over the past month.

Palm Oil:
Discussions within the market reveal a consensus regarding the price ceiling for BMD, estimated at MYR 4000-4100 per metric ton. Presently, the BMD price stands at approximately MYR 4073 per metric ton. Insight suggests a forthcoming recovery in production come May, as is customary. However, the current spread of palm oil over its competitors, alongside the anticipated surge in Argentina’s soybean oil exports, may exert downward pressure on palm oil prices. Nevertheless, most players emphasize the potential for geopolitical escalations in the Middle East and a plausible hike in energy prices, which could introduce an upside risk. Consequently, I think I would maintain a cautiously neutral stance, albeit slightly leaning towards bearishness regarding BMD palm oil. This is a viewpoint aligned with trader’s projections from within the broader market. This is a viewpoint aligned with trader’s projections from within the broader market, incorporating insights from Roman Dawidowicz.

Soy Complex:
Roman Dawidowicz, an esteemed analyst in the agricultural sector, underscores the significance of these developments, particularly in the context of global commodity markets. Confidence is mounting regarding the magnitude of Brazil’s soy crop, anticipated to fall between 145-150 million metric tons. Similarly, Argentina’s crop is projected at approximately 50 million metric tons, with no significant concerns regarding crop size. Attention has now shifted towards monitoring US plantings, with USDA forecasting the upcoming US soy harvest at 113 million metric tons, a slight dip from the previous season’s 116 million metric tons. At current price levels, Brazilian farmers exhibit a more optimistic disposition towards selling their crops. Given that prices remain at multiyear lows, traders don’t foresee substantial downside risks hence most maintain a neutral to slightly bullish outlook for Brazil and Chicago bean prices. This sentiment extends to soybean oil, buoyed by heightened interest from India, which seeks alternatives to costly palm oil, coupled with CBOT soy oil at multiyear lows. This stance is in line with the forecasts from several analysts.

Rapeseed Oil:
According to Roman Dawidowicz, attention is now on monitoring crop dynamics in australia, the EU, and Ukraine, all of which indicate lower yields compared to the previous season. Given the interconnectedness within the soybean complex, most traders are also adopting a stance of neutrality, albeit with a subtle inclination towards bullishness. It’s apparent that significant growth potential may be limited at present, especially considering the already considerable positions within the EU market. This assessment is also in line with several analysts and reports.

Sunflower Oil:
Moreover, Roman Zenon Dawidowicz points out, projections hint at a decline in sun seed stocks in Ukraine, possibly in Russia as well, in the coming months. Expectations point towards a diminished sun seed crop in Ukraine during autumn, slated at 12.4 million metric tons compared to the previous season’s 12.9 million metric tons. Additionally, the pricing dynamic in India reflects sunflower oil as a more economical option compared to palm oil so analysts and reporters perceive the current scenario as neutrally to slightly bullish in the short term and predict a sideways trend for FOB Ukraine prices and a downward trajectory for FOB Russia prices for the coming month.

Family / Diver’s Interaction With Curious Octopus Leads To Shrine Discovery by Morbeta11(m): 9:21pm On Apr 30

“He Wanted Me To Follow Him”: Diver’s Interaction With Curious Octopus Leads To Shrine Discovery

Scuba diver and photographer Jules Casey is no stranger to witnessing mesmerizing sights. Four years ago, she captured a pair of male and female seahorses united as the female transferred her eggs into the male’s pouch. (Seahorses and sea dragons are the only species in which the male gets pregnant and gives birth.)

And yet, this month, Jules found herself completely perplexed when, during one of her scuba dives, an octopus wrapped its long tentacle around her arm and began swimming away, almost as if indicating there was something he wanted to show her.

An octopus led Aussie diver Jules Casey to an underwater shrine with a photo of a man.
The shrine, named Lorenz' Loop, was created as a tribute by a friend of the deceased man.
Jules had previously found parts of the shrine, including statues and metal pickets, during her dives.

“I don’t know if I found him or if he found me. He reached out his arm to hold my hand, and at that moment, it felt like he wanted me to follow him,” the Australian free diver explained.

After accompanying the huge Maori octopus for a few minutes, the two reached their destination: a secret shrine on the ocean floor.

At the shrine, she found a framed photograph of a young man holding a white fluffy dog along with a plaque that read “Lorenz.”

The octopus hovered around the intriguing finding, indicating to Jules that he wanted her to focus her attention there.

For the content creator, seeing the man’s photo brought to mind other peculiar objects she had encountered around the area during past dives.

“Several weeks ago, I stumbled upon a few metal pickets in a line spaced 5 meters apart. Then, slowly, the beginnings of a trail, which included a few statues, appeared,” she shared.

“Over the next few weeks, more metal pickets were added; then pipes. The trail looped around not far from the starting point.

“Then, one day, an octopus led me to a plaque, the final piece of this puzzle.”

In addition to the statues secured to the ocean floor with metal pickets, Jules’ video documenting her unique underwater adventure also revealed a broad PVC pipe, which her octopus companion repurposed into a shelter.

“Octopuses like to hide in them,” the professional photographer said.

The artificial reef in Mornington Peninsula was named Lorenz’ Loop in honor of the man who inspired the tribute.

But little did Jules know that she’d end up crossing paths with the person who created the shrine.

Sharing her remarkable anecdote with a man at a local dive shop, Jules learned that her interlocutor had been behind the heartfelt tribute.

“I couldn’t believe it. But he showed me a little map he’d drawn of the structures in a loop for his friend, Lorenz, who’d passed away,” she told News australia.

While she had never been on a scavenger hunt with an octopus before, Jules says that close encounters with this species are not rare, given the animals‘ nature.

“They’re very curious, and I find more often it happens around their mating season. They’ll reach out and touch you. They do spend quite a bit of time exploring your camera.

“They’re amazing creatures. It’s so cool when one of them wants to come and explore you.”

Before the intriguing experience, Jules had encountered other objects from the shrine

Maori Octopuses, also known as New Zealand octopuses, are one of the largest octopus species in the southern hemisphere. Their tentacles can reach three meters in length.

Their color ranges from orange-brown to dark purple, and they have numerous small iridescent white spots over their arms, dorsal arm crowns, and webbing.

On social media, Jules shared that she has reencountered the curious octopus following the discovery of the shrine.

“Since we last met, he has lost the tips off most of his arms and has a few white patches. I’m guessing that he’s been mating and is getting close to the end of his life.”

Although this species has a short lifespan—they breed once and live for 12-18 months—the females lay approximately 7,000 eggs and continue caring for them after hatching.

Female Maori octopuses make significant sacrifices for their offspring. During the two months the eggs take to hatch, their mother doesn’t eat to ensure they’re always supervised. Also, by not feeding, they produce less waste, contributing to higher water quality for the eggs.

After the eggs hatch, the females are at risk of dying due to their weakened state from the time spent tending to them.
