PoliticsBinance Boss Jet Out Of Nigeria As Money Laundering Charges Are Withdrawn by Securitynewsng(op): 10:00am On Oct 25, 2024
Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan Freed and Departs Nigeria,SECURITYNEWSNG.COM reports.

Tigran Gambaryan, Binance's Head of Financial Crime Compliance, has left Nigeria after eight months of detention following the Federal Government's decision to drop money laundering charges against him. Gambaryan's health had significantly deteriorated during his imprisonment, and his release allows him to receive necessary medical attention.

Background of the Case

Gambaryan and his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance's regional manager for Africa, were detained in February 2024 on allegations of laundering $35 million. Anjarwalla escaped custody on March 22, 2024, while Gambaryan remained in detention and was arraigned in court on April 8.

Release and Reaction

A Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the charges due to Gambaryan's declining health, which had worsened to the point where he required a wheelchair. Yuki Gambaryan, Tigran's wife, expressed relief and gratitude, stating, "It is a huge relief that this day has finally come... I want to express my deepest gratitude to the US government for their efforts in securing his release."

Reaction from Binance

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, confirmed Gambaryan's departure from Nigeria in a statement, saying: "Today, American citizen Tigran Gambaryan left Nigeria to return home to his family after eight months of unlawful detention."

Gambaryan's wife, Yuki, also expressed her gratitude to supporters, stating: "There were moments I feared this day would never come, but Tigran's supporters gave me hope and strength. The road ahead for Tigran's recovery is going to be difficult, and I appreciate being given the time and space to focus on that. Our children cannot wait to see their dad again."

Implications

The dismissal of charges and Gambaryan's release raise questions about Nigeria's handling of international cases and potential implications for foreign investment.

Investigation and Future Actions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initiated the case against Gambaryan and Anjarwalla. The EFCC stated that the case could not proceed due to Gambaryan's declining health.

International Response

The US government's efforts in securing Gambaryan's release highlight international concerns about Nigeria's judicial process and treatment of foreign nationals.

Tigran Gambaryan's release and departure from Nigeria mark the end of an eight-month ordeal. As he receives medical attention and reunites with his family, attention turns to the broader implications of this case for international relations and Nigeria's justice system.

Don't Arm FRSC Officers, Ejiofor Tells National Assembly, SECURITYNEWSNG.COM reports.

Prominent human rights lawyer, Sir Ifeanyi C. Ejiofor, Esq., has strongly urged the National Assembly to reject the proposed bill aimed at arming Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officers, citing grave concerns over public safety and potential violence on Nigerian roads.

Ejiofor emphasized that equipping a civilian agency responsible for traffic management with firearms would escalate violence and put innocent lives at risk. He highlighted the FRSC's primary duties as guiding, educating and enforcing traffic regulations in a calm, orderly manner, rather than instilling fear or intimidation.

"The proposed bill is deeply troubling and should be rejected," Ejiofor stated. "Armed officials misusing their power have already led to tragic consequences, with trigger-happy law enforcement officers contributing to the nation's instability and needless loss of life."

Ejiofor also stressed the psychological impact of arming road safety officials, noting that checkpoints have become extortion points, with non-compliance often resulting in citizens' untimely deaths.

Instead of arming the FRSC, Ejiofor recommends investing in contemporary technology, improved training and coordination with security agencies to address insecurity's root causes. He urges citizens to reject the bill, prioritizing road safety over potential bloodshed.

Egiji, Son Of Ex-Enugu Assembly Deputy Speaker, David Atigwe Identified By Suspect As Gun Supplier To Kidnappers

Egiji Atigwe, son of former Deputy Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon David Atigwe, has been named as the person providing guns to armed robbers and kidnappers.

David is the elder brother of Hon Simon Atigwe, who lost his seat in the House of Representatives to Dennis Agbo of Labour Party last week following a Court of Appeal judgement on the rerun election for Udenu/Igboeze North Federal Constituency.

A suspect, who was arrested for his involvement in robbery and kidnapping activities in Igboeze North local government area and other parts of Nsukka zone, identified as Emzor, mentioned Egiji’s name during interrogation by the security agents.

In a video interrogation and confessional statement made available to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the suspect reeled out names of his gang members.

In the 4 minute and 7-second video, the suspect is interrogated by operatives of the Enugu State Neighbourhood Watch group in local dialect while on his knees.

In the video, the suspect said they hire their guns, including a double-barrelled gun from Egiji Atigwe, who is now on the run.

The suspect also told the police that Egiji shares the proceeds of crime among gang members.

A policeman is heard asking him how much they collected from one of their victims and he replied, saying, "I don't know but I was given N35,000 as my share. Egiji is the one who handles the money."

The suspect, who was tortured with hands handcuffed behind his back named one Star Boy and Cobra as members of the gang.

However, efforts made by SaharaReporters to speak with the Enugu State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful as the Command's spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe did not answer his calls.

As at the time of filing this report, he had yet to reply to the text message sent to him seeking his comment.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters gathered that there are ongoing moves by Ejigi’s family to scuttle the case.

"It seems as if the state government has intervened in the matter, as the commissioner for finance, Mr Urama, who is from same area with the Atigwe's has visited the Enugu- Ezike divisional police to request the police in the area to do a thorough investigation on the matter," a source told SaharaReporters.
