In short, this strain was developed for a target market looking for extra sweet fruit, uniform in size and ripeness. This has change the market for pineapple in Europe dramatically in the past years.

This new MD2 is also known also as Golden Yellow. Currently the MD2 represents about 70 per cent to 75 per cent of the EU market for pineapple and is priced at about 1.80 Euro to two Euro per kilogram which makes the variety about two times more valuable than the Smooth Cayenne.

Simple propagators can be constructed using fairly
cheap materials, such as bamboo and

hade is provided and that the fragile seedlings
are well-protected, by constructing a shade above t
he propagators. A convenient size for a
propagator is 1.5 (width) x 5.0 (length) x 1 (heigh
t) meter. Propagators should be kept clean and
completely covered with transparent polyethylene sh
eets. Humidity and temperature should be
high. The propagator compartments can be made using
wood or bricks and should measure not
