Fields are to be prepared with minimum disturbance to the soil (no-tillage farming). In consequence, manual clearing should be preferred to mechanical deforestation because bulldozers always remove topsoil with the important organic matter and compact the remaining soil. When an old natural fallow is cleared, the debris from the forest should be burned if plantain cultivation is planned for 1 or 2 cycles only. If perennial CUltivation is being considered, planting should be done through the mulch. Young fallows of about 3 to 5 years or improved legume fallows should

Propping: As the plantain plant develops, the heavy weight of the plantain bunch leads to the bending of the plants which may sometimes leads to breaking. Propping is about giving support to the plant using bamboo or other reasonable means. |

Preparation will depend on the type of land and the type of farm, and should be adapted according to available resources. Some months before planting, the land should be systematically cleared, followed by selective felling. In forest zones, after clearing, the dry undergrowth is burned. In savanna zones that have only sparse plant biomass, burning is not recommended; systematic clearing is enough to prepare the land. Visit: www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng Start placing order

>>> Planting While planting, make sure the bottom of the pit does not fill with water. If necessary, mix black earth with 10 to 15 kg of compost. Before planting, add 15 to 20 cm black earth to the bottom of the pit. The plants should be placed in the pit with their scars facing the same direction in order to facilitate their care and propping. Planting PIF plants is very delicate. Make sure each one is planted so that the collar is visible. Pile up a little soil around each plant and avoid planting them too deep. |
Each leaf sheath has a knot. Peel up to 2 mm above the knot. Remove the sheaths one by one, generally 3 to 5 layers. The pseudostem should be cut back to 1 to 2 cm above the stem’s last visible knot. Make a rightangled crosscut on the bud at the starting point of each leaf sheath. |

The success of the procedure depends on this stage. Note that the base of the plantain plant has a conical pseudostem formed by the leaf sheaths of its spirally arranged, long, thin leaves. Peeling involves remo-ving these leaf sheaths one by one. At the level of the bulb, there is a light-coloured band (the colour depends on the variety) that attaches each leaf sheath to the bulb; this is called the knot. Each leaf sheath has a knot. Commercial production and marketing of fried green plantain and banana chips has been increasing in various parts of the world over the past 25 years and these products are commonly found in retail groceries alongside potato chips and other snack foods. |
The desired pieces of the plant are usually planted 30–60 cm (11.8–23.6 in) deep in the soil and should generally be planted at the end of the dry season or the beginning of the wet season. Plant spacing is dependent on the cultivar being planted. Frequent weeding is required until plants are tall enough to shade out competing plants and should be started about 6 weeks after planting. Plantains are fast growing and require the frequent addition of nutrients as well as additional irrigation in the dry season. Plantain is often grown alongside other crop plants with similar requirements, indeed, the young banana plants make excellent 'nurses' for other crops such as papaya or cocoa which can be grown very close to the young plantains.
