The cultivation of plantain is underexploited due to inadequate provision of good quality propagation material. The negative influence of parasites also leads to the use of poor quality suckers, resulting in a growth cycle of over two years. The return on the effort put in by farmers is therefore unsatisfactory, leading to further discouragement among plantain growers. Fortunately, a number of intensive production techniques have been developed, including in vitro cultivation, typically used in research centres, and macropropagation using the plantlet from stem fragments (usually named the PIF technique) whereby the primary buds of entire suckers or fragments of corms are destroyed and axillary buds are exposed to high humidity to induce sprouts which are then harvested, hardened, and distributed. PIF has met with great success among small-scale farmers because it is relatively easy to produce large numbers of plantlets in a short time. One sucker can produce between 10 and 50 plantlets, depending on the variety of plantain and the experience of the farmer.

The plantain crop always benefits from the use of fertilizer (table 1). The yield from fertilized plants can be up to 10 times higher than that from unfertilized plants. The amount of fertilizer needed depends on soil fertility and soil type. General recommendations cannot be made as these should be based on soil or leaf analysis and the results of fertilizer experiments. A new and most promising planting material consists of in-vitro plants which are small maiden suckers produced from meristem culture. Planting material can be collected from: (a) An existing field, preferably an old field which is becoming unproductive. Otherwise damage to the roots may be caused when the suckers are being dug out and many mother plants may later tip over.

Plant size depends on the number of leaves produced before flowering: giant more than 38 foliage leaves; medium between 32 and 38 foliage leaves; small fewer than 32 foliage leaves. Plantain is a staple crop grown throughout the tropics. In Africa, plantain and Banana are also an important source of carbohydrate in the diet of more than 70 million people. Plantain is also an important source of revenue for farmers who produce the crop in small-scale field plantations and Backyards. Backyard soil is very rich in organic matter and nutrients from household refuse which is dumped there. The reaction of a soil with quick lime, or cement is important for stabilization or modification and design methodology. The methodology shall be based on an increase in the unconfined compression strength test data. To determine the reactivity of the soils for lime stabilization, a pair of specimens measuring 2 in. (50 mm) diameter by 4 in. (100 mm) height (prepared by mixing at least 5% quick lime by dry weight of the natural soil) are prepared at the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density (AASHTO T 99). Cure the specimens for 48 hours at 120o F (50o C) in the laboratory and test as per AASHTO T 208. The strength gain of limesoil mixture must be at least 50 psi (350 kPa) greater than the natural soils. A strength gain of 100 psi (700 kPa) for a soil-cement mixture over the natural soil shall be considered adequate for cement stabilization with 4% cement by dry weight of the soils and tested as described above
