It takes a while to change the texture of your soil, but it is possible. Clifford The MD/CEO advises working 6 to 8 inches of organic matter, such as leaves, into the soil. Spread leaves on your garden, use your lawnmower to chop them up, and then spread liquid nitrogen on top to speed up the decomposition process. Let this sit for about a month, then turn it into the soil. The earthworms will do the rest. (Ideally, you want to do this in the fall before it gets cold.)Visit:www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

A new and most promising planting material consists of in-vitro plants which are small maiden suckers produced from meristem culture. Planting material can be collected from: (a) An existing field, preferably an old field which is becoming unproductive. Otherwise damage to the roots may be caused when the suckers are being dug out and many mother plants may later tip over.

At least 116 plantain cultivars have been identified in West and Central Africa. Plant size and bunch type are the most important characteristics for production purposes. Plant size depends on the number of leaves produced before flowering: giant more than 38 foliage leaves; medium between 32 and 38 foliage leaves; small fewer than 32 foliage leaves. When the plantains flower, leaf production has ended. 3. Sources of planting material Several types of conventional planting material exist: Peeper: a small sucker emerging from the soil; Sword sucker: a large sucker with lanceolated leaves, the best conventional planting material; Maiden sucker: a large sucker with foliage leaves; Bits: pieces of a chopped corm.

The growing tip (or meristem) at the top of ·the corm continuously forms new leaves and later becomes the inflorescence. The corm produces many branches, called suckers, and the whole unit is often referred to as the “mat” or “stool”. After the plant crop has been harvested, the mother plant is cut down and the suckers are thinned. Although all suckers are followers or daughter plants, the cultivator selects one (the ratoon) to continue the next cycle of production. The second harvest from the plantain mat is called the first ratoon crop.Visit:www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Plantain is a staple crop grown throughout the tropics. In Africa, plantain and Banana are also an important source of carbohydrate in the diet of more than 70 million people. Plantain is also an important source of revenue for farmers who produce the crop in small-scale field plantations and Backyards. Backyard soil is very rich in organic matter and nutrients from household refuse which is dumped there. Such gar-dens are permanently in use for plantains which grow there luxuriantly, become very large and produce heavy bunches. They grow in groups or clusters as each bearing plant produces many suckers which are not pruned out. Human activity is limited to manuring, propping and harvesting.

The reaction of a soil with quick lime, or cement is important for stabilization or modification and design methodology. The methodology shall be based on an increase in the unconfined compression strength test data. To determine the reactivity of the soils for lime stabilization, a pair of specimens measuring 2 in. (50 mm) diameter by 4 in. (100 mm) height (prepared by mixing at least 5% quick lime by dry weight of the natural soil) are prepared at the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density (AASHTO T 99). Cure the specimens for 48 hours at 120o F (50o C) in the laboratory and test as per AASHTO T 208. The strength gain of limesoil mixture must be at least 50 psi (350 kPa) greater than the natural soils. A strength gain of 100 psi (700 kPa) for a soil-cement mixture over the natural soil shall be considered adequate for cement stabilization with 4% cement by dry weight of the soils and tested as described above

The larva causes damage through feeding and tunneling in the corm. Continuous feeding and tunneling causes the corm to become a blackened mass of decaying tissue.Abovegroundsymptomsarethe yellowing of leaves, withering and eventual death of the plants. Infected plants are easily blown over by winds since the roots are weak.Thematurelarva, orgrub is about 1-1.5cm long, creamy-white in colour, fleshy, and are legless, with the body distinctly curved and swollen in the more. Serious weevil attacks may lead to massive toppling of bananas. Other detrimental effects of weevil infestations include: premature plant death, stunted growth, delayed fruit maturation, production of small bunches, reduced number of suckers, reduced sucker vigour and development of wage

Presently, the standard recommendation for nematode control in plantain/banana crops is the use of clean planting materials (thoroughly pared corms or micropropagated plantlets), treated with a nematicide, with follow ups at regular intervals. However, due to the environmental impact and consumer health considerations, attempts at breeding nematode resistant plantain/banana cultivars areongoing.Vida tel is also recommended for controlling

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

The novel method involves the introduction into these pseudo stem or the rhizome of the banana or plantain plant an implant with nutrients that can be solubilized slowly by the aqueous material of these plants and taken up to the leaves and or down the rhizome and supplement the nutrients that is being taken up by the roots of these plants.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

An object of this invention is to provide a novel method of providing nutrients and for controlling pathogens infecting banana and plantain plants by implanting a slow release implant containing nutrients and/or pesticides and fungicides into banana and plantain plants. Nutrients and/or pathogen controlling substances are slowly released into the banana or plantain plants over a period of time thereby obviating the need to fertilize and/or apply a pathogen controlling substance to the banana and plantain plants being treated.

Musa parasidiasca belongs to the natural order, plantaginaceae which contains more than 200 species, twenty-five or thirty of which have been reported. The common plantain (Plantango major) has broad, irregular oval leaves, abruptly contracted at the base into a long broad, channelled footstalk. The fully grown blade is 1.3–2.4 meters long and about two- third as broad, usually smooth, with several parallel veins. Plantain grows more than any other plant in compacted soils, is abundant beside paths, roadside and other areas with frequent soil compaction.
