About four to seven suckers, depending on banana or plantain cultivar, will sprout three weeks after removal of the apical dominance. Sprouted suckers are detached immediately once they attain three to four leaves (usually when they measure 20-30 cm in height). Detached suckers are transferred directly to the field.

Moko disease is a virulent bacterial infection that causes the fruits to ripen prematurely and kills infected plants in just a few weeks. Panama disease or fusarium wilt, on the other hand, is caused by the fungus Fusarium oxyforumcubense and is so damaging that it single-handedly destroyed the Nigerian Plantain industry only 3 years after it was discovered.Click here to download more information www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Plantains grow best in hot and humid climates, require a rainfall of at least 1000 mm (39.4 in) per year to survive and have a high light requirement. Plantains will grow optimally at 27°C (98.6°F) and require a deep soil, rich in organic matter which is well draining and well aerated. The plants will grow optimally in soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. Young plantains are very susceptible to wind damage and it is recommended that they are planted in sufficient shelter or in a block so that the plants will protect one another.

Panama disease is a fungal disease that attacks the roots and colonizes the conducting tissue of the pseudostem, causing the plant to collapse. In the home landscape situation, soil infested with Panama disease will limit the varieties that may be successfully grown.

The seeds are tiny black specks running through the center of the fruit. In commercial plantations, the parent banana plant dies after harvest and is replaced with a daughter plant.

Just in two months your suckers will be ready. In this case if you have decided to have either the ‘ebanga’, ‘ngumba’ or ‘nyale’ species of plantains (species of plantains in the South West), you can make a small demonstration farm from where you will get your suckers for your propagator that is used in the PIF technique of multiplication. If you decide to plant all it is good to label so that you don’t confuse when selling the seedlings or planting your plantation. The false decapitation can give you up to 15 seedlings and you can always return to the demonstration propaga-ting farm for suckers..

Decrease the cost of food – Because the use of pesticides improves crop yields, crop protection technologies also impact the cost of food. Without crop protection chemicals, food production would decline, many fruits and vegetables would be in short supply and prices would rise. Helping to keep food prices in check for the consumer is another large benefit of pesticides.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that Plantain has become one of the most consumed source of food in Nigeria today, at home, in the bus or while treking to work, you will always see either roasted, fried or cooked plantain sellers selling this God given rich in iron food. Plaintain can be converted into any form of food and it is highly recommended by the health experts. Plantain costs you nothing if you want to venture into it as a business, it rather brings you untold wealth.
For unemployed men and women looking for one job or the other to catter for themselves and their family, i think and wish you would consider getting into plantain cultivation. I bet you will never regret in the next 7months and above with its year round production.

It takes a while to change the texture of your soil, but it is possible. Clifford advises working 6 to 8 inches of organic matter, such as leaves, into the soil. Spread leaves on your garden, use your lawnmower to chop them up, and then spread liquid nitrogen on top to speed up the decomposition process. Let this sit for about a month, then turn it into the soil. The earthworms will do the rest. (Ideally, you want to do this in the fall before it gets cold.)Visit:www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng or www.facebook.com/sedulusplantainfarming

HOW TO START PLANTAIN CULTIVATION
1. Do you have an empty land? if yes you are well positioned, it grows in all kinds of soil but best in a loamy soil
2. Prepare the soil by decomposing it with decaying plants, mulch etc., this is to protect the suckers from the harsh sun that may dehydrate it
3. Get plantain suckers from heathy plant and cut space them
4. In case you wish to add fertilizers, use very little and ensure they are mostly good NPK fertilizers.
5. Do not weed the plantain with any form of modern implement especially at their early stage of development, use mostly hand to weed so as not to harm the tender sucker
6. water them as may be needed

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

An object of this invention is to provide a novel method of providing nutrients and for controlling pathogens infecting banana and plantain plants by implanting a slow release implant containing nutrients and/or pesticides and fungicides into banana and plantain plants. Nutrients and/or pathogen controlling substances are slowly released into the banana or plantain plants over a period of time thereby obviating the need to fertilize and/or apply a pathogen controlling substance to the banana and plantain plants being treated.

Presently, the standard recommendation for nematode control in plantain/banana crops is the use of clean planting materials (thoroughly pared corms or micropropagated plantlets), treated with a nematicide, with follow ups at regular intervals. However, due to the environmental impact and consumer health considerations, attempts at breeding nematode resistant plantain/banana cultivars areongoing.Vida tel is also recommended for controlling
