He has been identified as Obumselu. At 14 years old, he already is a robbery suspect apprehended by the Federal Special Anti- Robbery Squad (FSARS), Adeniji Adele, Lagos. The boy has opened up on how he carried out his tasks within the gang. According to the police, the gang specialises in diverting trailers loaded with motorcycles from different parts of the country to Nnewi in Anambra State. Obumselu says his boss, Ikechukwu Peter, a trailer driver and native of Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, recruited him into the gang. According to Obumselu, Peter, who is still at large, promised to free him from poverty and frustration. Spokesman of FSARS, Lekan Ogundare, a Deputy Superiatendent (DSP), said the suspect was arrested on the grounds of a petition sent to the Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Mohammed Gana, by Fidelix Onyejegbu. The petitioner had alleged that his trailer loaded with 130 Lefan motorcycles was robbed by some armed men at Shagamu-Ore Express Road and diverted to an unknown destination. He alleged that the goods were loaded on Ojo Road in Lagos on August 1, adding that the trailer was heading for Warri, Delta State. It was gathered that based on the petition, the CP mobilised a crack squad led by Inspector Banjoko Oluwemimo to track down the hoodlums and recover the goods. Fortunately, the team tracked down another trailer marked XK134NSH, carrying the hijacked motorcycles around Challenge Area, Ibadan, Oyo State capital. Its driver, Ikechukwu Peter, escaped upon sighting policemen, but Obumselu was arrested. The boy told the police that he and his master were not the ones that stole the trailer at the Ore Road, Shagamu. He explained that the goods which are the property of Finos Global Enterprose, Warri, were off-loaded in Ibadan by the robbers who diverted it. He said his master told him that the goods were stolen from a warehouse in Ibadan. Police operatives said the motorcycles were inside Peter's trailer on its way to Nnewi when they were sighted. The owner of the goods said his motorcycles were 130, but when it was recovered, 110 motorcycles were left. The driver of the trailer that initially carried the goods from Ojo Road, it was learnt, is being detained at the Odogbolu Police Station, Ogun State. Obumselu confessed: "I don't know the registration number of the trailer. My master called me and told me that thieves stole motorcycles and that we should go and steal them in a warehouse in Ibadan. We went there and loaded the motorcycles on August 14. We were heading for Nnewi when policemen stopped us in Ibadan. "I did not know that my master would run away, otherwise, I would have beaten him to it. If we had reached Nnewi, it would not have been possible to recover the motorcycles again. It was the first time I would follow him to rob or do this kind of thing." The trailer and the recovered motorcycles were parked at the Adeniji Adele Police Station. The PPRO said investigations were going on in a bid to arrest all those involved in the robbery. |
About N1 million, is at stake at the ongoing Best of the Season Ram Championship at Jalisco Sports Centre, Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos. This is the sixth edition of the gaming event. Over 100 rams would contest in the two-week long championship which began on Sunday and would end on September 1. An official of the Ram Sports Promoters Association of Nigeria, RSPAN, who pleaded anonymity, said on Monday in Lagos that the championship was aimed primarily at picking out the strongest ram. He also said that the competition is a celebration of "our cultural heritage as practised by our forefathers." "Ram charging is a cultural sport that has existed for a long time but is (now) being used by people for betting purposes in order to generate money. Ram fighting is one of our cultural heritages that our forefathers practised but they did not have a legitimate body governing the coordination of their sport," he said. The official added that the strongest rams at the Lagos zonal competition would compete in the National Rams Championships, scheduled for January 2014, also in Lagos. "Ram owners from the 33 zones in the West, which comprises Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara, assemble their rams for the annual event," he explained. According to the official, RSPAN was formed six years ago in order to properly manage ram competitions and prove to the public that the animals used in the sport are being monitored. "The association over the years has been able to generate competitions and make it known to the public that the fighting rams, referred to as gladiators are safe,'' he said. He stated that the association discouraged any form of unofficial betting within the premises of the competition in order to create orderliness and reduce fighting among fans during the competition. Another official of the body said that the competition explained that fights are overseen by three match officials to further control and reduce the occurrence of injuries on the rams. "We have the ram monitor, ram referee and ram marshal who jointly help to properly station the rams and conduct their charges in order to minimise injuries to the head of the participating rams. "These rams can charge at a speed of 50 km an hour and collide with a force that can literary crush a human's skull like an egg,'' he said . He said that the rams, naturally equipped with horns to resist such pressure can make over 30 charges at fight which he said made the fights interesting to watch |

1) Versace: Once insanely popular in the mid 90′s thanks to Notorious B.I.G and 2Pac Shakur, the Medusa head brand is back in full force in the second decade of the new millennium. Versace silk shirts and gold jewelry started popping up in videos last year now the trend has crossed borders with Nigerian celebs such as Wizkid, Davido and Ice Prince rocking the brand. To be part of the in crowd, a Versace item or two must be seen on you at public functions. Even Davido has done a freestyle on the popular 'Versace' song. We guess it is here to stay for a while. 2) T-Shirts with contrast pockets: The cool trend started late last year. From an American design it has now become a global phenomenon. T Shirts with contrast pockets is a little step higher from the simple and classy ordinary T- shirt. The contrast pocket adds a little bit of colour to the T-shirt, denim and sneaker get up. It's a fresh fad which young pop Nigerian acts have started embracing. 3) Camo: the Camouflage or camo as it is popularly known is back in fashion circles. According to Forbes- the military-inspired motif is the hottest print in menswear seen in everything from shirts to shoes. For those who have discerning eyes, the Camo trend is in Nigeria with celebrities sporting the military wear. Camo or camouflage is making a resurgence after the height of its popularity 99/00. The trend started last summer in Paris with many top brands putting out camo designs. The camo fever is still very high in Europe, Asia, and North America and is beginning to seriously catch on in Nigeria. 4) Denim Jackets: Denim Jackets have stylishly replaced the Varsity jackets trend which was hot last year. Since the creation of denim it has been a mainstay of pop fashion over the decades. This year more and more young, cool and trendy people are taking the evergreen denim love higher by rocking denim jackets. The denim jacket can either be sleeveless or long sleeve depending on your style and taste. Denim jackets go best with chino pants. Double denim (that is the act of wearing a denim jacket on denim pants) is frowned upon in fashionista circles. 5) Rolex: Move over G-shock, the rolex is back. Many Nigerian artistes are dumping their Casio G-shocks for something more mature and what's more mature than a Rolex? Whether gold or silver, a Rolex watch denotes class, taste and maturity. No wonder the chairman of rap music M.I wears one. With endorsement money flowing around in the music industry these days, young acts are buying Rolexes to make a power statement that they have moved from boys to men. |

South Africa is celebrating the 95th birthday of its most prized national figure, anti- apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. One of the many things Africans and people all around the world can look for inspiration are the many quotes Mandela has provided us with. Here is our list of the "Top 10 Nelson Mandela Quotes of All Times." 1. Nothing in this world is impossible and Mandela makes sure to remind us of that. "It always seems impossible until it's done." 2. A lot of people find it easy to be pessimistic and think of the negatives that can arise out of a situation. But in this quote, Mandela shows us that thinking positive is the only way to go. The more positive you think, the more positive the outcome will probably be. "I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death." 3. Living isn't just about doing for yourself, but what you do for others as well. "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." 4. An ode to the fact that racism is not passed on genetically, but passed on through teachings. "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." 5. Life is a course with endless obstacles to hurdle. "After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb." 6. We are too quick to give up and refuse to get up from our failures. If we don't fight to get up, we are giving up on something bigger - life. "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." 7. Sometimes you can leave a place and find that the only thing that has changed after all the years is yourself. "There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered." 8. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. "If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner." 9. Be brave! "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." 10. From the poorest of countries to the richest of nations, education is the key to moving forward in any society. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." |
