Sweden has opened a new consulate in Lagos to broaden economic cooperation between Nigeria and the Nordic country. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new Swedish Consulate was inaugurated on Thursday by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Landmark Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos. Speaking at the ceremony, Swedish Ambassador in Nigeria, Carl Michael Gräns, said the consulate in Lagos would be a focal point for trade and sociocultural activities for both countries. Mr Gräns emphasised that Sweden’s first embassy was opened in Nigeria on October 1, 1961, adding that both countries had celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations. “Right now, we want to broaden our economic cooperation and that is one of the reasons this honorary consulate has been opened. We understand that the pandemic has done a lot of harm to businesses and relations but we desire to get closer and be a significant part of the economic recovery, ” said the Swedish envoy. He said the new honorary consul would consult affairs for Swedish citizens and Nigerians on business issues as well as cultural promotion. Philip Akesson, newly appointed Honorary Consul of Sweden in Lagos, said his primary task was to assist Swedish citizens in Nigeria with consular matters, while also supporting Swedish companies in necessary ways. Mr Akesson said that in the course of his 10 years in Nigeria, he fell in love with the entrepreneurial energy, warmth, the economic culture and drive of Nigerians. “There are many opportunities in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, and I believe that the relationship between both countries will continue to be strengthened. “I look forward to supporting our Swedish businesses and also supporting the embassy in Abuja as they work to improve upon ties, friendship and the promotion of trade between both nations,” Mr Akesson said. Inaugurating the new Swedish Honorary Consulate, Mr Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is open to more business partnerships with Sweden. According to the governor, the presence of the mission in Lagos will further strengthen Swedish-Nigerian businesses leading to mutually beneficial economic, cultural and political results. “It is exciting to know that the bilateral relations between Sweden and Nigeria spans over sixty years. This speaks to our partnership and I appreciate the Swedish government for putting this together. A lot of businesses and sovereign nations in Nigeria recognise that while we have a thriving capital in Abuja, for them to be close to citizens, activate businesses, and initiate cultural activities, there is always a sense that they must have a footprint in Lagos. “This partnership is not only about what Lagos stands for but also the benefits we all can derive from bilateral relations and today, the Swedish government has done the most appropriate thing,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said. Published 3 February 2022 A South African biotech firm, Afrigen, said Thursday it has produced the first mRNA COVID vaccine made on the continent and that it will be ready for clinical trials in November. Cape Town-based Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines is leading the pilot project, backed by the World Health Organization and the COVAX initiative, to tweak Moderna’s shot. “At laboratory scale we have a vaccine that we now need to test,” Afrigen’s Managing Director, Petro Terblanche, told AFP, adding the first shot was ready during the second week of January. Tests on animals will start next month, “but the human studies will only start around November 2022,” she said after meeting a group of officials sponsoring the project. Afrigen researchers sequenced the publicly available genetic code that Moderna used to make their vaccine, made the DNA, the RNA and produced their own shot. “So we have completed the process from the design to a final formulation, but it’s small scale, but it’s a good start, it’s a fabulous start,” said the laboratory’s chief. She spoke after the UN-backed global Medicines Patent Pool gave the firm a $45 million grant. Their mRNA vaccine can be kept at warmer temperatures, making them easier to store in low- and middle-income settings. The original jab requires expensive -25°C to -15°C refrigeration. Charles Gore, MPP’s Executive Director said in a statement that his organisation was “delighted to support Afrigen and its African partners to greatly expand local manufacturing capacity and reduce today’s gross inequity”. The grant will cover the technology transfer hub’s work for five years, through 2026. The French government funds the MPP’s activities linked to the hub. “We will keep supporting this project… it’s a very important one for the world and for Africa,” the French Ambassador to South Africa, Aurelien Lechevallier, said after touring the lab. The MPP is an international organisation that supports the development of medicines for low- and middle-income countries. Set up in July, the tech transfer hub will train other countries and hand out production licences to poor nations left out in the race for the life-saving shots. “Its aim is to allow for greater and more diversified vaccine manufacturing capability, strengthen African regional health security and respond more equitably” to the current and future pandemics, said a statement. Africa is the least vaccinated continent in the world. More than a year after the world’s first COVID shot was administered and two years into the pandemic itself, just 11.3 per cent of Africans have been fully immunised. The problem has exposed Africa’s huge dependence on imported vaccines and its tech weakness compared with Europe, China, and the United States. To date, only one per cent of the vaccines used in Africa are produced on the continent. Other players involved in the Cape Town hub which was set up in July are the Biologicals and Vaccines Institute of Southern Africa, the South African Medical Research Council, and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Published 29 January 2022 Socialite and celebrity club owner, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, says nobody can destroy his name and all that he had “worked so hard to build”. The Anambra-born businessman also lamented that many social media users were using his name for a lot of “bad” things. He stated this in a Facebook Live on Friday night just as the social media platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg verified his page. Cubana said, “This is my only verified Facebook page. A lot of guys are using my name; Obi Cubana, Obi Iyiegbu to do a lot of bad things on Facebook. The name Obi Cubana is not associated with anything bad or evil. Please disregard, block, report. “For me to come up to do this, you guys should know that it is really getting at me. Thank God that Facebook has verified me right now so we can interact more here.” “You can’t destroy what we’ve worked so hard to build over the years,” he added. Cubana, who has been in the nightclub business since 2006, grabbed international headlines last July when he organised a lavish funeral for his mother, Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. He subsequently became a subject of investigation by the Nigerian government. In November 2021, the socialite shut down his Abuja club, Hustle & Bustle, over the death of one of his customers but reopened weeks later even as the police are probing the matter. Also, last November, he was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for three days as part of investigations into alleged money laundering, tax fraud and other financial crimes before he was released with a condition that he would continue to report back for questioning. In the second week of January 2022, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency grilled Cubana for his alleged link to the illegal narcotic business before he was granted bail and asked to return at a future date. He, however, said he was not involved in any drug deal, noting that he had made a covenant never to traffick in hard drugs. Cubana has over 1.9 million Facebook followers and over 2.5 million Instagram followers whom he serenades with ravishing photos of himself, his wife, children and friends taken in the cabins of private jets, amongst other exotic places. Gov. Badaru-led committee submits report, says party primary free, fair Amid allegations of imposition by some governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the primary election in Ekiti State, the party’s election committee says the exercise was successful. The Chairman of the committee, Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State, stated this after it submitted its report to party’s interim leadership in Abuja on Friday. The primary election was conducted in Ekiti State on Thursday. Midway into exercise, seven out of eight governorship aspirants in the party pulled out of the race after citing alleged irregularities. The aspirants protested against the list of the party local government electoral committees for the exercise on the grounds that members are supporters and campaigners of an aspirant, the former Secretary to Ekiti State Government, Biodun Oyebanji. Mr Oyebanji, however, went ahead to garner 101,703 votes to defeat the other aspirants, including Opeyemi Bamidele, a senator and Femi Bamisile, a member of the House of Representatives. Other aspirants include a former Minister of Works, Dayo Adeyeye, a former House of Representatives member, Bamidele Faparusi, Demola Popoola, Kayode Ojo, and Oluwasola Afolabi. In his account to journalists at the APC Headquarters in Abuja, Mr Badaru explained that primary was held in 166 out of the 177 wards. He said his team cancelled the election in 11 wards due to reports of disruption in the areas. “We have submitted the results sheets and reports where elections were conducted – 166 wards. Eleven wards were disrupted and we cancelled those areas. But in 166 wards, people actively participated. And I think you all have the videos of what transpired in all the 166 wards except the 11 wards,” the Jigawa governor said. Speaking on the protest by the seven aspirants, Mr Badaru said the guidelines and the mode of the election was not designed to favour any of the aspirants. “They (aspirants) are party members. What we expect them to do is to join hands with us so that we can continue to build the party and we continue to support the candidate that emerges. “At the opening of my engagement with the aspirants, at the stakeholders meeting that we held in Ekiti State, I told them that power comes from God. And it is only God that will determine who will win,” he said. The governorship election in Ekiti State will conducted by INEC on June 18. Tope Omogbolagun with Agency Report Published 29 January 2022 Justice Charles Agbaza of an FCT High Court in Friday rejected evidence by a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the trial of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. Lawal is charged alongside his younger brother, Hamidu, who is a director of Rholavision Engineering Limited; an employee of the company, Suleiman Abubakar; Managing Director of Josmon Technologies Limited, Apeh John Monday; the two companies: Rholavision Engineering Limited and Josmon Technologies Limited. The EFCC charged them with 10 counts of fraud relating to a contract awarded by the Presidential Initiative for the North-East for the removal of invasive plant species to the tune of N544 Million. They all pleaded not guilty. Delivering a ruling, Justice Agbaza agreed with the defendants that the court in 2021 rejected some exhibits on the said phone. He added that the EFCC was only attempting to bring into the court records, exhibits already marked rejected. The judge held that any oral evidence of the EFCC’s witness on the rejected exhibits would amount to hearsay since he was not the maker and did not sign them. Agbaza said, “I have carefully examined the foundation of arguments for and against the admissibility of the evidence in dispute and found only two issues for determination. “The first issue is on whether the evidence of the prosecution witness falls on hearsay in respect of the exhibits, while the second issue is on whether this court has once rejected the exhibits sought to be tendered. “On issue one, the witness on his own informed the court of how he was invited into the EFCC laboratory and was shown information extracted from a iPhone7. On this, I am satisfied that the witness is not the maker of the exhibits in dispute. They were only shown to him according to his oral evidence here.” The judge added, “Therefore, anything said or to be said by the witness is nothing but hearsay and for this reason, I resolve this issue in favour of the defendants. “On the second issue, there is no dispute that the exhibits were earlier sought to be tendered but they were turned down and marked rejected and even, the rejection is a subject of appeal at the Court of Appeal. “For this reason, I agree that the evidence cannot be admitted having been earlier rejected and marked rejected.” The former SGF had on January 13, through his lawyer, Chief Akin Olujimi SAN, objected to the line of evidence being given by the witness, Dare Folarin, on an iPhone seized from one Musa Bulani. Olujimi said that EFCC wanted to smuggle in evidence earlier rejected by the court when it ruled against admitting a compact disc on the said iPhone. Other defendants’ counsel aligned themselves with Olujimi’s submission. Counsel for the third defendant, Mr Napoleon Idelana, said that EFCC filed an appeal against the ruling of the court on the rejection of the disc. The Prosecution Counsel, Ofem Uket, urged the court to discountenance the defendants’ objection, arguing that Folarin’s evidence was not a hear saying evidence. Uket argued that the witness, who is the eighth prosecution witness (PW8), was only saying what he and other investigators saw and did at the EFCC laboratory on the iPhone. The case could, however, not process due to the information given to the court that the PW8, who ought to continue with his evidence-in-chief was not present in court as he was indisposed and therefore, sought an adjournment. Justice Agbaza adjourned the case until Feb. 16 and Feb. 17 for continuation of hearing. Published 28 January 2022 The Peoples Democratic Party has said by proposing another 18-month extension for fuel subsidy removal, the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is shifting the responsibility to the next administration. In an interview with our correspondent on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary, PDP, Debo Ologunagba, said the opposition party was not surprised by the Federal Government’s decision. The Federal Government had on Tuesday announced plans to extend the subsidy removal implementation period by another 18 months. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, disclosed this to State House correspondents during a special briefing on fuel subsidy at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Sylva’s declaration came barely 24 hours after the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, announced the suspension of the planned petrol subsidy removal. Speaking during a meeting held at the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday, Ahmed had said the suspension would be until further notice. However, Sylva, who was also at the meeting with the lawmakers on Monday, said the Federal Government was proposing an 18-month extension of the statutory period to implement the removal of subsidy on petrol. According to him, the extension will give all stakeholders time to ensure that the implementation is carried out in a manner that ensures that all necessary modalities are in place to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal in line with prevailing economic realities. However, the PDP spokesman, on Thursday, accused the All Progressives Congress of toying with Nigerians, a move he said, would lead to the party’s failure in the 2023 elections as “Nigerians are tired.” Ologunagba said, “Buhari and the APC shift responsibility any day and any time. So, it is consistent with the APC. They are constantly shifting responsibility. If you will recall when there was a massacre in Benue State, there was an outcry that the President was not there to sympathise with the people. “When he eventually travelled there, he shifted the blame to the Inspector-General of Police, saying the IG had moved to Nasarawa instead of Benue, where he was asked to relocate to. That’s the kind of leadership he runs. There’s an overall passing of blame. “The APC has never owned up to anything. So, we are not surprised that they would do that. But we know that Nigerians are tired and they won’t vote for the APC one more time.” The former lawmaker also argued that contrary to the prevalent narrative about the PDP’s 16-year rule, Nigeria experienced incredible growth during the same period. He said, “You will also recall the narrative about the PDP wrecking the economy in the 16 years it spent in power. This is not true. Those accusing us are doing so on distorted facts. “Under the PDP, Nigeria’s economy was the fastest growing in Africa and number 26 in the world. Unemployment was less than it is today. We had over $500bn in our external reserves. Today, we don’t even know what is there. “This government shifts blame, and that’s why for the first six months in office, we didn’t have ministers. So, it’s about shifting blames.” Ologunagba added that the Federal Government’s decision to postpone fuel subsidy removal was meant to increase its chances of re-election in 2023. He stated, “We are aware that the government reneged on removing the petroleum subsidy to incentivise Nigerians to vote for the APC in the 2023 elections, because we know that there is often a spike in the subsidy around election periods. “If you check from the previous election, you will notice a spike from the previous year into the election year. Now, we are in another cycle, and their projection is rising to N3tn. “They have no plans for Nigerians; they have no policy. But again, Nigerians are up. They are hoping for the PDP to rescue them. And like I always say, hope is a superpower. We are ready. Nigerians are ready. Our party is ready.” Source: https://semmatloaded.com/2022/01/fg-apc-toying-with-nigerians-shifting-responsibility-says-pdp/amp/ |

The committee of the House of Representatives established to further alter the 1999 Constitution has adopted the bill seeking to confer citizenship rights on foreigners married to Nigerian women. The committee adopted the bill following its presentation by consultants working with the lawmakers on the amendment of the document. It is potentially another progress for women towards equality at the ongoing public hearing on the review of the Constitution. The lawmakers had agreed to the creation of extra seats for women in federal and states constituencies, although, the 35 per cent affirmative action was rejected. Joy Ezeilo, one of the consultants working with the committee, while presenting the recommendation of the consultants, said existing provision in the constitution is discriminatory against women. The existing law only allows citizenship by registration to be conferred on foreigners married to Nigerian men. She said the bill seeks to amend section26 (2a) of the 1999 Constitution by opening citizenship by registration to male and female. The Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, who chairs the committee, while speaking on the bill, called for more clarification on the specifics regarding the bill. According to him, even in Nigeria, there are differences in culture as regards the rights of spouses in Nigeria. “Even within the context of our culture, I want to give an example of Idoma culture, you can only bury an Idoma woman in her homeland. In this age, we have a lot of attachment to our culture,” Mr Wase said. He expressed concerns on the conferment of automatic citizenship on foreigners based on marriage. The deputy speaker argued that Nigerian citizenship should be guarded jealously. Ms Ezeilo argued that citizenship is not automatic, noting that the bill seeks to replace “any woman” with “any person”, which according to her is discriminatory. The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, also raised concerns about the bill. According to him, such a bill could confer rights to vote and be voted for on foreigners. “What I was saying is– if we are going to agree to that provision, what about, for instance, somebody from Taraba State is married to a woman from Delta or Abia. Can that man from Taraba come down to Abia to contest? We should include it… If we are allowing the husband to come from abroad and claim citizenship,” he said. Despite the concerns, the bill was adopted by the lawmakers. However, the proposal would still follow Nigeria’s rigorous constitutional amendment procedure, including passage by both chambers of the National Assembly, approval of at least 24 of the 36 state legislatures and presidential assent. The Police Service Commission on Wednesday ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to investigate the link between suspended head of the Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari and internet fraudster, Abba Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi. The commission directed the IGP to submit the report of the fresh probe in two weeks time for the PSC Standing Committee on Discipline to review. The decision was reached following the advice of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN. Recall that a panel headed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, Joseph Egbunike, had earlier investigated Kyari. Kyari had been suspended in July 2021 for alleged involvement in a $1.1 million Internet fraud allegedly perpetrated by Hushpuppi and four others; AbdulRahman Juma (Abdul); Vincent Chibuzo (Kelly); Rukayat Fashola (Morayo); and Bolatito Agbabiaka (Bolamide). The Federal Bureau of Investigation had alleged that Hushpuppi paid $20,600 to two bank accounts allegedly provided by Kyari on January 20, 2020, an allegation Kyari denied. It was gathered that the AGF on Wednesday stated that the evidence submitted was not enough to convict Kyari. A senior official, who spoke with Punch on condition of anonymity said, “The advice from the AGF is that the case needs further investigation; that the evidence produced on Abba Kyari was not enough to convict him despite the fact that they have established a prima facie case against him. But the facts cannot convict him in the court of law. “So, the police report was returned and the IG was asked to set up a special panel to look at the case. We have given them just a short period of two weeks to turn in their report. “The final report is expected to return to the standing committee which will review and send recommendations to the plenary where the final decision on Kyari will be taken.” Meanwhile, Hushpuppi will be sentenced on February 14, 2022, the US attorney’s office at the Central District of California has said. According to BBC Pidgin, the court’s spokesperson, Thom Mrozek said Hushpuppi has been scheduled for sentencing on Valentine’s Day. The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has flagged-off the construction of the road linking Opebi-Ojota bridges to solve major traffic congestions in Ikeja. The governor added that his administration has completed over 65 road projects with over 50 others at various stages of completion. Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Wednesday during the flag-off event of the 3.89 kilometre-long carriageway to serve as easy exit for commuters leaving Ikeja-Onigbongbo axis towards Ojota and Maryland. He said, “Prior to this project, there was no direct road linkage between Opebi, Maryland and Ojota. Available roads linking the areas are limited in connectivity options, thus paving the way for the high traffic volume and congestion within the Ikeja traffic network. “We recognised the need to create permanent solution to the conflicts by initiating another legacy construction project linking Ojota, Opebi and approach roads to connect Opebi Road from its tail end with Ikorodu Road by Odo Iya Alaro. Upon completion, the carriageway will reduce travel time for Lagos and Ikorodu-bound traffic from Opebi. “I am excited to inform you that since the inception of this administration almost three years ago, we have shown our commitment to the continued construction and maintenance of road infrastructure by completing, commissioning and handing over 65 road projects and several other improved junctions, while more than 50 others are at various stages of completion.” The Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, said the link bridge would reduce the volume of traffic along the Opebi axis. “The Ojota-Opebi link bridge and Approach Roads would at completion, decongest and reduce the traffic gridlock often experienced around Opebi/Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way and Mende corridor. “Aside from providing a direct link between Opebi and Mende, Maryland and Ojota end and vice versa, it also has two underpasses and a U-turn providing access for Ojota to Ikorodu as well as for Opebi bound commuters,” she said.
