Car TalkRe: Hyundai Sonata (2009) Going Off In Reverse by senator2k9(m): 5:33am On Jul 10
fashoo2010:
Please guys, I noticed my Hyundai sonata 2009 model going off once I put it on reverse.

A week before I noticed it vibrates/jerk in reverse but it became worse now, the engine will go off when I put it in reverse but if I quickly throttle it and put it back to drive, it will move.

My mechanic is not available right now... What can I do please.?

What Is likely causing it?
I recommend these checks first:
Scan the vehicle for diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner.
Inspect the engine and transmission mounts.
Clean the throttle body and perform an idle relearn if required.
Check the automatic transmission fluid level and condition.
Observe the engine RPM: if it drops sharply below about 500 rpm when reverse is selected before stalling, the issue is likely with idle control or excessive transmission load.
A few questions:
Is your Sonata a 2.4L 4-cylinder or the 3.3L V6?
Does it stall only in reverse, or does it also vibrate when you put it in Drive?
Is the Check Engine light on?
Has the transmission fluid been changed recently?

Many vehicle problems don't happen suddenly they often give warning signs long before a major breakdown.

A pre-purchase inspection helps you understand a vehicle's actual condition before making a decision. After buying, regular inspections and early attention to minor issues can prevent expensive repairs and help keep the vehicle reliable for longer.

Taking action early almost always costs less than waiting until something fails.
Car TalkRe: Car Vibrates At High Speed by senator2k9(m): 9:39pm On Jul 04
since you’ve already replaced the tires, balanced them, aligned the wheels, and checked the CV joints, brake rotors, and drive shafts, this is now a diagnostic problem rather than a routine maintenance issue.

Here are the most likely causes, in order of probability:

1. Bent wheel (rim)

* A tire can be new, but if the alloy or steel rim is slightly bent, it will vibrate at higher speeds.
* Have each wheel checked on a road-force balancer or rim runout machine.

2. Faulty wheel hub or wheel bearing

* A worn bearing may not make much noise initially but can cause vibration, especially when decelerating or changing load.
* Jack up each wheel and check for play.

3. Worn suspension bushings
Common culprits on a 2009 Camry include:

* Lower control arm rear bushings
* Compliance bushings
* Ball joints
* Stabilizer links
* Tie rod ends

When these wear out, the wheels can shimmy during braking or when slowing down.

4. Brake rotor runout or hub surface
Even if the rotors were checked, if the hub face has rust or dirt, or the rotor wasn’t measured with a dial indicator after installation, you’ll still get vibration under braking.

5. Sticking brake caliper
A partially seized caliper can:

* Heat one rotor excessively.
* Cause vibration when braking.
* Make the car pull slightly to one side.

After a drive, compare the temperature of all four wheels carefully. One wheel being much hotter than the others is a clue.

6. Engine or transmission mount
If the vibration occurs while decelerating and not just at speed, worn mounts can transmit vibration into the cabin.

7. Inner CV joint
Many mechanics only inspect the outer CV joint. The inner CV joint can cause vibration under load or during deceleration even when the outer joint seems fine.

8. Axle shaft balance
Even if the shaft looks straight, a slightly bent or poorly balanced axle shaft can cause vibration that only appears above certain speeds.

9. Wheel hub runout
If the wheel hub itself is slightly bent from a previous impact, balancing won’t solve the vibration.
Car TalkRe: First-time Car Buyer Seeking Advice: RAV4, Matrix, Or CR-V? by senator2k9(m): 7:57pm On Jul 01
donareal:
I’m about to buy my first car and I need some advice from experienced car owners.

My options are Toyota RAV4, Toyota Matrix, and Honda CR-V. My budget is between ₦4.5m and ₦5m.

As a first-time buyer, which one would you recommend for me and why?

I’d really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks
For a first-time buyer in Nigeria, here's how I'd rank them:
2008 Honda CR-V – Best overall choice. It's very reliable, comfortable, fuel-efficient for its size, and parts are widely available. It's also forgiving for new drivers and generally cheaper to maintain than many SUVs.

2008 Toyota RAV4 – Excellent choice. Equally reliable with strong resale value and low maintenance costs. However, be sure it has been inspected carefully, as some models can develop excessive oil consumption if poorly maintained.

2006 Toyota Matrix – Best if you're on a tight budget. It's extremely dependable, economical, but expensive to maintain, but it has less ground clearance, a smaller cabin, and fewer features than the SUVs.

Recommendation: If your budget allows, buy the 2008 Honda CR-V after a thorough pre-purchase inspection. It offers the best balance of reliability, comfort, practicality, and value for a first-time buyer. If you're buying a Nigerian-used or tokunbo vehicle, a professional inspection before payment is essential regardless of the model.
Car TalkRe: Is This TOKUNBO Worth the price they are calling (Pics) by senator2k9(m): 7:51pm On Jul 01
The 2010 Lexus RX 350 is a more luxurious and comfortable SUV with a smoother, quieter ride and a more premium interior. It also has excellent reliability, but maintenance and repairs are generally more expensive, and fuel consumption is slightly higher.
The 2014 Toyota Venza is also very reliable but is more practical and economical. It offers better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs, and a comfortable ride, though it doesn't feel as refined or luxurious as the RX350.
Overall: Choose the 2010 RX350 if you value luxury, comfort, and a premium driving experience. Choose the 2014 Toyota Venza if you want a dependable vehicle with lower running costs and better fuel efficiency.

Car TalkRe: 5 Common Car Scams Nigerians Should Watch Out For by senator2k9(m): 11:07pm On Jun 25
@Nairalanders.
A LEAN MIXTURE and a RICH MIXTURE refer to the air-fuel ratio (AFR) in an internal combustion engine:

✅ A lean mixture has more air and less fuel than the ideal stoichiometric ratio (14.7:1 for petrol). It burns cleaner, improves fuel economy, and reduces CO emissions but can cause engine overheating, knocking, and power loss if too lean.

✅ A rich mixture has more fuel and less air than stoichiometric. It provides more power (useful during acceleration or cold starts), keeps the engine cooler, but increases fuel consumption and emissions like unburnt hydrocarbons and CO.

Modern engines use sensors (like the oxygen sensor) and ECUs to maintain the right mixture for different operating conditions.

Always insist on a professional pre-inspection purchase before you buy that car .

Car TalkRe: What Y'all Think About The Toyota Avalon 2006-2008 by senator2k9(m): 5:49pm On Jun 21
2008 Toyota Avalon
3.5L V6 engine (268 hp) with 6-speed automatic transmission
Very comfortable, quiet, and spacious
Reliable and good for long-distance driving
Fuel economy: about 19–28 mpg (8–12 km/L)
Common issues: dashboard cracking, oil leaks on high-mileage cars, and occasional headlight problems
Verdict: A reliable, powerful, and comfortable full-size sedan with low maintenance costs when properly maintained.
Car TalkRe: Low Ride Issue by senator2k9(m): 5:47pm On Jun 21
Raising a car's shock absorbers (or lifting the suspension) to gain more ground clearance can be useful on rough roads, but it also has some disadvantages:
Reduced Stability
The vehicle's center of gravity becomes higher.
Increased body roll when cornering.
Greater risk of rollover during sudden maneuvers.
Poorer Handling
Steering may feel less precise.
The car may feel less planted at highway speeds.
Increased Wear on Suspension Components
Ball joints, control arm bushings, CV joints, tie rods, and wheel bearings may wear out faster due to altered suspension geometry.
Uneven Tire Wear
Lifting can affect wheel alignment (camber, caster, toe), causing tires to wear unevenly if alignment is not corrected.
Reduced Ride Comfort
Depending on how the lift is done, the suspension may become stiffer or top out more frequently over bumps.
Increased Fuel Consumption
A higher vehicle creates more aerodynamic drag.
Larger tires often fitted with lifts can further reduce fuel economy.
Headlight Misalignment
The front end may sit higher, causing headlights to shine too high and potentially dazzle other drivers.
Drivetrain Stress (for AWD/4WD vehicles)
Excessive lifting can increase CV axle angles, leading to vibration and premature CV joint failure.
