The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to find a way on how to rescue the abducted female students of Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, saying the bulk stops at the President’s table. He also revealed how he was able to fix Lagos State in spite of the gloomy picture he faced at the inception of his administration. Fashola spoke on Tuesday in Abuja during a political debate organised by the Kukah Center entitled ‘Both Sides’, a political debate featuring him and his Jigawa State counterpart, Alhaji Sule Lamido, with the theme, ‘The Nuts and Bolts’. He said, “I will give to the President a very honest and brutal advice that I have continued to offer to him; I have done this consistently even by telephone or by letters and I will continue to offer that advice. On national security, I don’t have the briefing that the President gets and that is why I have always said that the easiest thing to do is to criticise. Do you have the facts that are at his disposal? Because it is only then that we can have a very serious disagreement. “As far as sincerity about Chibok girls is concerned, honestly, let me just say that the problem that Chibok symbolises has assumed a dimension that is ordinarily outside the authority and control of government. It is now a matter of insurgency and therefore, the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Armed Forces have only one Commander-in-Chief and that is Mr. President. The bulk stops at his desk on this matter and it cannot be an easy decision. “The most I am willing to say I can’t measure sincerity, I know it is a tall call now. The Chibok parents are grieving and want their children back. There are many options on the table, but I don’t also think they are expecting body bags of their children, it is a difficult place to be. “But of course I have always said, issues of this nature may want to provoke a debate about the methods. I am not your Commander-in-Chief, if you want more clarity, you know where to go.”. Source. http://www.punchng.com/news/chibok-girls-rescue-outside-govts-control-fashola/ |
Health ministers in southern Africa have agreed to take coordinated actions, including quarantine on people travelling from Ebola-affected West African countries. Southern African Development Community Health Ministers held an extraordinary meeting in Zimbabwe to discuss response to the Ebola outbreak. A statement released after the meeting on Tuesday said that authorities in the region will screen travellers at all critical points of entry or exit and people with a history of close contact with those infected, the infected dead bodies and the infected animals will be quarantined for a period of up to 21 days. The 15 member states of the SADC were also urged to discourage their citizens from travelling to affected countries, as well as to avoid hosting mass gatherings involving people from affected countries unless it was absolutely essential. The common position on travel restrictions becomes the first clearest sign of a regional response to the epidemic. So far, only one country in the region, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded Ebola cases from a separate outbreak not related to the outbreak in West Africa. David Parirenyatwa, chairperson of the SADC health ministers, who is also Zimbabwean health minister, emphasized the need for cross-border consultations to facilitate exchange of information, and agree on joint collaborative actions and for SADC member states to strengthen surveillance, case finding and detection, reporting and contact tracing, and share information on Ebola with WHO in a timely manner. The epidemic has now claimed more than 2,000 lives in West Africa since its outbreak in Guinea this year. Source:Punch |
Fear gripped students, parents and staff of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday over a report that a patient at the OAU Health Center was suspected to have Ebola Virus Disease. The patient, our correspondent gathered from sources, is a female student of the university. When our correspondent visited the hospital, it was observed that health officials were disinfecting the surroundings of the medical center. Our correspondent reported that more concentration was paid on areas where patients sit before being attended to. It was also gathered that top officials of the hospital held an emergency meeting after testing the patient. It was learnt that the suspected patient was admitted since Monday. Though, medical officials in the hospital denied that the suspected student tested positive to EVD, they said the Federal Government Emergency Ebola Team has been contacted. One of the officials, who preferred to be anonymous because he was not authorised to speak, said the suspected patient had been slated for an intensive examination by the EVD team from Lagos on Wednesday. Another official claimed that the suspected student had a fever. The official said there was panic because the patient told them that she came from Port Harcourt. It will be recalled that Ebola cases had recently been reported in the Rivers State capital. The official said, “A patient was brought to the health centre and due to the fact that she lives in Port Harcourt, there were fears that it might be Ebola. We have carried out tests on the victim and found that she is suffering from fever. Not satisfied, we pressed further by holding an emergency meeting which ended about five minutes ago.” When asked why the hospital was disinfecting its surroundings, another official said, “We are only taking preventive measures. To be 100 per cent satisfied, we have sent a letter to the Ebola Emergency Team in Lagos and the team should arrive by tomorrow.” Efforts to reach officials of the institution on Tuesday proved abortive as they were said to be at the 52nd Matriculation ceremony of the university.
