Getting started with writing your final year project may be stressful, especially as an undergraduate. You may at times even think of outsourcing it to an agency, and save yourself of the stress. Well, it may seem so, but, you can handle your project yourself if you follow these little steps.

1. Draw out a plan: Writing a project starts with developing a plan. In fact, without a plan, you may end up not meeting your project submission deadlines. There are a few tools that can be used to create a plan such as Project Libre, Microsoft Project or even a simple Gantt Chart. By defining your tasks clearly and setting a deadline, you can easily get your project progressing as planned. However, a common mistake made by most people is to create unrealistic plans which may cause them not to reach their milestone. So if you are creating a project plan, ensure that you factor other life variables and most especially, allocate time for the unknown.

2. Research before you start: Ideally, this should come before the first tip, but I think it’s better here. Research is part of the plan. Before choosing a project topic, you need to be sure that it is feasible and you have access to the resources to complete it. Many project students are halfway stuck on their projects primarily because they did not run a feasibility test. But the question is, how do you run a feasibility test for your project? Well, there is no standard way of doing so, but a feasibility test will include you researching on the variables of your project topic, checking out if other researchers have done something similar, and how long it took them to complete it. A good example will be checking out a project on building a telecommunication antenna (Base Station). If after researching on the project topic, and you realize they are not much or that it will take at least five years to complete the design, but you proceed to choose the topic, well there can only be one outcome.

3. Seek assistance: You’ve heard this statement, “two is better than one”. The truth is no one tree can ever make a forest, so always reach out to professionals and colleagues that you think can help. You’d be surprised by the different ideas and suggestions that they can give. There are several professionals out there that can help you. Try searching for them on professional platforms such as LinkedIn.

4. Measure your performance: Apart from creating a plan and getting assistance, you need to measure conformity to the plan and your performance. Your aim should always be to get the A. So randomly check how you are doing with the plan you created and if there is need to adjust your plan, don’t hesitate to do so.
