A controversial photographer takes mugshots of strangers on the streets with battered and bruised faces says he is depicting a true image of real people.

Bruce Gilden, 68, is drawn to people who are often ignored because of their appearance and chooses his subjects because they are 'visually interesting.'

The photographer is based in New York but for his latest book of photographs, Face, he visited West Bromwich, in the midlands and Romford, in Essex, to capture portraits as well as in America.

He chooses his subjects from the street but he is particular about who he chooses.

Bruce said speaking to Mail Online: 'I make their day. Some of the people in my photos are alone in the world. They don't have anyone else to speak to and they're often ignored.

'One lady in England with one tooth in her mouth, I showed her the shot and she said "I'm beautiful."

'She did try really hard to make her lipstick nice.'

Bruce is unflinching in his depiction with harsh lighting and the frame cropped close to the subject's face.

The photographs have no retouching done after the picture has been taken.

He gets permission from all of his participants in the book first before shooting them.

He said: 'Sometimes you've got the perfect ingredients in the first shot, other times [I need more shots] these are people I've never met before.

'Everything has to be correct.'

He makes sure 'the look is intense in the eye.'

Some critics have said Bruce is holding his subjects up to ridicule in the internet age, when their portraits will be open to comments from strangers.

But Bruce insists he is on their side and considers them underdogs.

He said: 'These are real people and I'm showing them as they are. This is about me and the world.

There's a big discrepancy between the rich and the poor, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

'A lot of people have money and have got possessions in life and they pay lip service to to the underdog.

'I don't claim to be a humanitarian but these are the people I'm interested in.

I consider myself an underdog too, that's why I'm on their side. I see in their face they've struggled in life.'

He usually takes pictures at state fairs in the US because there's so many people to choose from and it's more likely he'll find someone visually interesting.

When he asks people to participate and have their picture taken, he says the majority agree to take part.

Bruce said: 'I'm excited about finding them visually interesting so people become excited too, of course. 'I tell them it's not a fashion shoot.'

He has also used children as subjects and said parents are usually on board.

'In America, in the cities, parents are very protective of their kids. If you don't ask permission they go ape-s***.

'But when I ask in the Mid West, 99 per cent of parents agree.'

He pointed out that the subjects he chooses are ones often ignored in the media but they should be celebrated.

He said: 'To me the photographs are very powerful and make a statement.

'It doesn't suit some people's look on life but I photograph for myself.

'I'm just taking a picture of someone's face.

'I think magazines are so much worse, all the messages they give, all these celebrities with their face lifts and saying you have to thin or you're not good enough.'

And he wants to put that message out with his work.

He said: If you don't look at something that's wrong, how are you going to change it?

'People should talk about these kind of people. I care about these people.'

A man in army fatigues plunged a huge blade into the back of an unsuspecting woman three times in Harlem, New York

A shouting match over a cheap umbrella led to the death of a man while his girlfriend was critically injured.

A brawl between two couples in Harlem, New York City, on Friday morning exploded into a savage knife-stabbing frenzy, cops said.

“There was blood everywhere,” said an eyewitness.

Minutes earlier, the couples were filmed arguing over the ownership of the flimsy-looking umbrella.

A horrifying video obtained by the New York Daily News captured a man in army fatigues, a huge curved knife in his right hand, plunging the blade three times into the back of an unsuspecting woman.

The victim was wrestling with her attacker’s girlfriend, each one clutching and twisting one end of the umbrella in a bizarre tug of war, when she was stabbed from behind on the busy street.

The man wielding the deadly blade looked “like he had just come back from a safari,” and carved the woman up quickly, said an eyewitness.

Nobody stepped in to break up the street fight, with spectators instead intently watching it or milling around once it ended.

Jesus Santiago, 46, and his girlfriend Monica Hernandez, 36, were arrested, although no charges were immediately filed.

“A fight over an umbrella,” said community activist Jorge Senquis, 46, who watched the wild brawl.

“Two women started fighting, and a guy comes in and stabs the guy and the girl. In that moment, it took everybody by surprise.”

Nancy Estevez, 46, was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition with multiple stab wounds to her torso. The unidentified dead man, who was apparently armed with a box cutter, died at the same hospital.

Locals said the slain victim was a homeless man who lived on Wards Island and came to East Harlem to visit a neighborhood methadone maintenance clinic.

Santiago was apparently able to disarm the other man before stabbing him repeatedly in the abdomen and chest, a police source said.

A box cutter was recovered by cops at the scene, but it was unclear if the knife was found.

A police source said the argument might also have involved money.


According to Senquis, the homeless man was a well-known local figure: “He was a nice guy. He was always out here on the block.”

The umbrella umbrage began inside the fast-food restaurant, where the two couples were shouting across the tables at each other. “That’s my umbrella!” one shouted before McDonald’s security ushered the quarreling quartet outside.

The festering feud spilled onto the pavement and escalated once they were outside the restaurant.

A second short video of the confrontation showed the two men wrestling on the pavement, with Santiago lying on his back before the other man runs away.

A third clip shows the mortally wounded victim lying on the ground with the injured Estevez in the street only a few feet behind him.

Barber Carlos Rodriguez, 30, said the neighborhood could use more cops.

“That’s crazy,” he said about the fatal attack on the busy thoroughfare. “People are always getting hurt. The NYPD needs to have more security around here.”
