TV/Movies / Question And Answer With Filmmaker "TOPE OSHIN" by ShockNG: 12:11am On Feb 05, 2019
Popular Nigerian filmmaker Tope Oshin had a very enriching and interesting Question & Answer session online with a delighted and yearning film community whose name might probably scare you off –The Film Rats. The group founded by Martin Nwachukwu aims to promote and encourage good discussions about film literature in Nigeria .

Tope Oshin is a Nigerian television and Film Director, Producer and Casting Director. Tope, who was an actor for 12 years, featuring in films like Relentless (2010 film), cut her teeth in directing, working as an assistant director for The Apprentice Africa and has since become known for directing popular African TV dramas and soap operas such as Hush, Hotel Majestic, Tinsel (TV series) and Season 6 of MTV Shuga.[ Though she has directed several introspective short films such as The Young Smoker, Till Death Do Us Part, New Horizons and Ireti, she is known for her 2012 feature film Journey to Self, and March 2018 feature film New Money.

Oshin has produced some of the highest box office breaking movies in Nigeria, including the 2015 romantic film Fifty, about four fifty-year-old female Lagos residents, which broke box office records upon release in December 2015, taking N20 million in the first weekend ,The Wedding Party 2 as at 2018, the highest grossing Nigerian film and her latest release Up North which has received positive reviews from international audiences and even screened at Facebook HQ.

The online session kicked off in the afternoon at about 2pm on February 4,2019 as notified with brief introductions and rules of engagement by the in house moderator Dika Ofoma who did a very good job we must say and lasted for about 1 hour 30 minutes, although slated for 1 hour with MS Oshin as she preferred she graciously allowed more questions from the community which caused a spill over.

As we have it some of the expected questions were thrown at her such as “how can we be famous, how can we get funding, what motivates you ma” but like a pro she replied with simple but concise answers that made individuals drop clapping emoji’s

Here are some of the curated questions and answers for you.

QUESTION: Mrs Tope Oshin, what are your advices for an upcoming Actor and writer??

ANSWER: Attend auditions tirelessly. Improve your skills. Seek to be better than the last time. If there’s any talent at all, the right eyes and the right projects will find you.

QUESTION: I always like your post so I’m a diehard fan. My question is 1. Do you have a film academy and how do you recruit new and upcoming actist into your academy. 2nd. In what ways do you tend to support upcoming actress here in Nigeria because I’m one of them and You are among my role model.

ANSWER: I do not currently have a film academy, but quarterly workshops currently in planning process this 2019. For Foundation Filmmaking, Directing and Acting. Eyes on my social media for info when we’re ready to kick off. 2. Being on this forum and other training workshops I have facilitated and taught at are my ways of giving back. Talking about my work and challenges, the highs and the lows on my social media or interviews are ways of giving back and impacting the next generation.

QUESTION: Amaka’s kin is an expose on the evolution in the participation of women in the movie industry, as a follow up I’ll like to know if there are measure in place to mentor women with keen interest exposing them to necessary steps that can be taken to be better and so better.

2) When it comes to Stories and Scriptwriting, what is your take on the types of stories we have in Nollywood today and the stereotypes and as a director, have you ever had to take a job even when the story doesn’t apply to it?

ANSWER: I have supported and mentored most of the young female directors and filmmakers practicing in Nollywood today. And regularly still take 2 interns on every project I direct or produce to work closely with me. 2. I don’t have a take on anyone’s stories. Different filmmakers have different reasons why they’re filmmakers. Different types of stories they’re passionate about and would like to tell. I believe in diversity. And art is subjective. Every art work as long as it finds its audience, is authentic. I’m happy at the diverse turn storytelling has taken in Nigerian cinema particularly in 2018. I only look forward to the future in anticipation and glee of what more is to come. 3. Story and my resonance with it is my first consideration for accepting to direct a job. It’s all about the story for me and how it connects with humanity and what connects us all. If it shines the light on a human problem effectively, if it’s unusual, if it has the potential to change lives or mindsets, I’m all in.

QUESTION: Good afternoon ma’am, thanks for taking out the time to contribute here. I wanna ask, what’s your take on audience preferences in Nollywood, especially on the idea that Nigerians only appreciate comedies or romantic dramas at the *cinemas* , many have suggested that Nigerians do not want “serious” films. Also, what’s your position on Film criticism in Nigeria, should filmmakers shut down critics or should they embrace it?

ANSWER: In my opinion, there is no such thing. And I’ll put the question back to you. When Hollywood films of different genres come to Nigerian cinema, who watches them? Who sells those screens out? Nigerians? Or Nigerians? We, you, me, everyone, we watch American horror, fantasy, drama, alternative, comedy, psychological thrillers etc. So why do we think Nigerians are suddenly not as intelligent when it comes to our films? Criticism in Nigeria, like filmmaking in Nigeria, and like every other industry in Nigeria and the world, has a beginning and a honing process.

Start off, get it wrong, get it wrong, fumble, fumble, research, develop yourself, someday, it will work right. But yes, there will still be those who will never get it right. But what can we do? We can’t make or force other people to behave in certain ways that will appeal to us or please us. We can all only keep honing out crafts and getting better at what we do. I only wish more people feel this way about our films. Hate to hear people turn down a film and say “this film is intellectually inaccessible to Nigeria.

QUESTION: what is your Driving Force ?

ANSWER: In truth, my children and making the very best of this one life that I have. Setting a good example of hard work and results for my children and stretching this one life as much as possible, to explore and give all the best I have and all that is achievable and affect as many lives as I can before it is over.

QUESTION: Good afternoon Ms. Tope Oshin. It’s nice to have you on board. Down to my questions .Most people believe that when women are thriving especially in this industry, they are driven by notion that they are women and they want to show the stuff they are made off. Is that the same with you? If no, what drives you? I saw you mention something about chauvinism earlier.

2. When making a film, how much do you have to compromise as a filmmaker because of financial restrictions? And how often do these compromises come up?

3. How do you know when the job is well done? Do you gauge your work by the audience’s response or by the critics’ opinion?

ANSWER: On what drives me, see my immediate answer above. 2. Choosing/making the right story for the budget you have is a very important factor that every producer must consider, otherwise it could lead to all sorts of trouble and waste of a good story and opportunities.

Choose/write your story according to your available budget OR Find the budget to adequately serve your chosen story. I’m a firm believer in giving a story what it needs to be made.

3. My gauges are a) myself. how satisfied and happy I am while making and when done making the film. b) my audience. They’re the end users of the product. Are they mostly happy and satisfied? Then the story connected and did its job. Then I’m happy.

That’s all that matters to me. How I feel, how my audience feel. Films are made for the audience.

“THE FINAL QUESTION WAS ASKED BY OUR REP AND THE RESPONSE WE GOT WAS QUITE REVEALING ON MS OSHIN PERCEPTION! READ BELOW”

QUESTION; whose work (s) has a major impact in your career and journey as a female filmmaker

ANSWER; Not one person in particular.

I’m a Storyteller. I’m not a hardcore proponent of stylistica and cult following. Every story communicates to me how it should be told. The visual language, color scheme/palette, camera work, shots etc. All story dependent for me. So when I watch movies, I concentrate more on the storytelling and how all the other visual and sound elements are put together to serve that particular story.

My study is wide and I learn from every film or series I see. And no, I don’t see myself as a female filmmaker when it comes to my work. Only when it comes to representation or challenges faced for gender reasons. Concerning the work itself, I’m a Filmmaker. No gender prefix.

The session ended with appreciation messages from the community and of course applause emoji’s.
