There has Been a lot of fuss about the ongoing special millitary intervention or war going on in Ukraine spearheaded by it's more powerful neighbor. There has been an extreme coverage of the conflict in the media partly due to it being controlled by the west and Ukraine been an European country. Infact in just less than 2 months Ukraine has gotten more support than Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Somalia, Yugoslavia, Syria Palestine has gotten in decades. One side claims Ukraine has the right to do as it pleases and join a millitary alliance that solely aim to counter the Russian federation. The other side believes Russia has the right to defend it's territory from further NATO encroachment on it's borders because of the anonymity the west has for Russia. Even the world is split with most people siding with Russia, especially non Western countries in Africa, South America and Asia. I personally I'm interested in doing a little survey to know what nairalanders think and who they support. So if you support Russia LIKE on the other hand if you support Ukraine SHARE

Unconfirmed accounts claim that blogger Gonzalo Lira, who lived in Kharkov, was abducted by unit linked to Azov battalion Chilean-American blogger Gonzalo Lira was last heard from in Ukraine almost a week ago. He was reporting from the Ukrainian city of Kharkov and has been a critic of President Volodymyr Zelensky and of Ukraine's conduct during the conflict. The Chilean foreign ministry said that it was aware that “those close to the Chilean Gonzalo Lira Lopez, who was in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov,” had lost contact with him since April 15. According to the diplomats, they remained in touch “with the relevant entities, to stay informed regarding any news about the location of [our] compatriot.” Lira, who is a Chilean-American author and movie maker who used to work in Hollywood, was to appear on former UK MP George Galloway's radio show Mother of All Talk Shows (MOATS) on Sunday, but ended up missing the program. “It's with great regret and even greater sense of concern and anxiety and more, that I have to tell you that there is still no sign of our first guest Gonzalo Lira,” Galloway said on his show. Other independent journalists, including Dan Cohen and Max Blumenthal, have also sounded the alarm over the blogger's disappearance and have expressed fears he could have been kidnapped, even tortured. They have added, however, that this wasn’t confirmed or verified. Tweets from Ukrainian Nazi Sergei “Botsman” Korotkikh, who has now made his account private, say Gonzalo Lira has been kidnapped, tortured and might be beheaded. Impossible to verify, but this is plausible. SBU is known to torture and murder its victims. Lira has been living in Ukraine for the last several years. After the start of the Russian military operation, he moved from capital Kiev to Kharkov in the east of the country to do his reporting from there. The 54-year-old has been a staunch critic of Zelensky and Ukraine's conduct during the conflict, speaking about far-right tendencies among the Ukrainian military and debunking what he saw as false reports by Kiev about events on the ground. He was active on YouTube, posting under the nickname ‘Coach Red Pill,’ as well as on Telegram and Twitter. According to Lira, both the Ukrainian authorities and the radicals have been increasingly unhappy with his reporting. He had earlier claimed that the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) had made at least two attempts to “disappear” him, but he was lucky to escape capture. The blogger had also blamed news outlet the Daily Beast for attracting Kiev’s attention to his work and revealing his location to the law enforcers. The accusations were made in a video entitled 'The Daily Beast is trying to get me killed.' The US outlet dedicated a large article to Lira on March 21, in which he was labeled “a Pro-Putin shill in Ukraine.” In the piece, Daily Beast journalists said they’ve contacted the Ukrainian authorities to clarify if the man was still in Kharkov. In late March, Lira posted a list of the names of Ukrainian opposition figures who have died or been detained since the outbreak of the conflict, on his Twitter page, insisting that “if you haven't heard from me in 12 hours or more, put my name on this list.” His last tweet is dated April 15. According to the unconfirmed accounts on social media, he could've been abducted by the members of the Kraken unit, part of the notorious Azov battalion. One of the accounts, purporting to belong to a Ukrainian nationalist, wrote on Twitter that it was ironic that the Chilean national ended up being apprehended by a fighter whose nickname is “Chile.” He also said that he was eagerly awaiting the video of the blogger's execution to pop up online. Canadian independent journalist and human rights activist, Eva Karene Bartlett, who exchanged messages with Lira a week ago, confirmed to RT that “he was definitely quite worried about his own safety.” “Gonzalo was doing a lot of interviews… and he made it clear that he was aware of the danger that being in Kharkov posed to him in that the city is being overrun with Nazis. But he felt it was important to be there to witness how things played out,” she said. The blogger’s family could also be under threat now “because his name is now well-known,” Bartlett warned. She also praised the work that Lira did, pointing out that “he being in Kharkov was one of the sole voices in the English language speaking critically about what’s happening under Zelensky.” https://www.rt.com/russia/554256-lira-blogger-ukraine-missing/

The suspension of service in the country has led to the loss of 700,000 subscribers American streaming service Netflix has seen a massive loss of $40 billion in market capitalization after the company reported its first customer decline in more than a decade. The company said the number of subscribers in its first quarter dropped by 200,000, falling well short of its forecast of adding 2.5 million subscribers. The suspension of service in Russia over the Ukraine conflict led to the loss of 700,000 users. The abrupt shift in fortune for the streaming platform comes after months of success during strict pandemic-related lockdowns. Netflix has lost nearly half of its value since January, when the firm warned of weak subscriber growth. The company expects deeper losses ahead, as inflation and fierce competition contribute to a heavy decline in the number of users apart from the Russia exit. The streaming platform forecasts it would lose two million subscribers in the spring quarter. Netflix is reportedly contemplating offering a lower-priced version of the service with advertising to tackle lagging subscriber growth. Similar offerings from rivals HBO Max and Disney+ have proved to be a hit. “Those who have followed Netflix know that I’ve been against the complexity of advertising, and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said as quoted by Reuters. “But, as much as I’m a fan of that, I’m a bigger fan of consumer choice.” The declines hit other video streaming-related stocks, with Roku dropping over 6%, Walt Disney falling 5% and Warner Bros Discovery down 3.5%. https://www.rt.com/business/554212-netflix-value-drops-russia-exit/

Billionaire Akhmetov will start with the country’s steel capital, Mariupol Billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, the richest man in Ukraine, has pledged to restore the damage brought to the country amid Russia’s military operation, in an interview with Reuters published on Saturday. “We will rebuild the entire Ukraine… I trust that we all will rebuild a free, European, democratic, and successful Ukraine,” Akhmetov stated. Once known as ‘the owner of Donbass’ for his assets in the region, he said he will begin the reconstruction with the city of Mariupol, where his metallurgical company Metinvest group owns two large steel plants, Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. Earlier this week, the company reported that Ukraine had lost up to 40% of its metallurgical capacities since the start of Russia’s military operation on its soil. Metinvest, Ukraine’s biggest steelmaker, also said that its enterprises would not operate on Russian-controlled territories of the country, adding that the Mariupol siege had disabled over a third of Ukraine’s metallurgy production capacity. My ambition is to return to a Ukrainian Mariupol and implement our [new production] plans so that Mariupol-produced steel can compete in global markets as before,” Akhmetov said. The businessman is the richest citizen of Ukraine, according to Forbes estimates. His fortune currently stands at about $7.6 billion. On February 23, the day before Russia launched the operation in Ukraine, he announced that he had paid 1 billion Ukrainian hryvna ($33.7 million) in taxes to the country’s budget ahead of schedule. He noted that he returned to the country the same day and has not left since, although many other businessmen have fled Ukraine amid the conflict. Akhmetov’s main assets are held in the System Capital Management (SCM) company, the largest financial and industrial group in Ukraine. SCM owns over 70% of Metinvest. I am confident that, as the country’s biggest private business, SCM will play a key role in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine,” Akhmetov said, noting that the damage from the conflict has already reached $1 trillion. He added, however, that in order to restore the country, Kiev will need “an unprecedented international reconstruction program… a Marshall Plan for Ukraine,” similar to Washington’s aid project that helped restore Western Europe after World War II. https://www.rt.com/business/554007-richest-ukrainian-rebuild-country/

Explosions have sounded in Kyiv and the western city of Lviv, and the mayor of the Ukrainian capital said rescuers and medics were working at the site of a blast on the outskirts of the city. Russian media quoted its defence ministry as saying Russia had destroyed production buildings of an armoured vehicle plant in Kyiv and a military repair facility in the southern city of Mykolaiv. The strikes were carried out by high-precision, long-range weapons, it said. Ukrainian officials said at least two civilians were killed and four wounded in Russian attacks across the country. A diplomatic note revealed by US media warned Western powers of "unpredictable consequences" if they supplied Ukraine with advanced weaponry. Ukraine Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said nine humanitarian corridors had been agreed for Saturday (local time) to evacuate civilians, including from the besieged city of Mariupol by private cars. Russia has denied targeting civilians since it invaded Ukraine on February 24 and has said Ukrainian and Western allegations of war crimes are fabricated. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-16/ukraine-latest-russia-armoured-vehicle-plant-kyiv-warns-us-nato/100995630

US President Joe Biden has been widely mocked following a public appearance on Thursday. After delivering a speech in North Carolina, he appeared to offer a handshake with no one there to receive it. The president visited North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro to make a 40-minute address on the economy. After finishing his remarks on how his administration has worked to rebuild supply chains and kickstart an economic recovery, Biden turned right and stretched his hand out as if he was offering it for a handshake. He then turned his back to the audience and stood for a second or two, before walking off the stage. Biden’s political opponents interpreted the hand gesture as the latest episode of apparent confusion, which the 79-year-old politician has demonstrated on several occasions during his presidency. Richard Grenell, who served as US ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence in the Trump administration, called it a moment of “weakness” that the entire world sees. GOP Senator Ted Cruz tweeted an eyes emoji in response to footage of the episode. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said it is “incredibly embarrassing” to have Biden as president. Some Twitter users said Biden wanted to shake hands with an imaginary friend or a ghost. Others gave him the benefit of the doubt. “It was clearly a hand gesture (a playful ‘How’s that?’) to his people,” one self-described “solidly on the right” user said, dismissing Grenell’s criticism. Since the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden has been far less energetic than in previous years. On several occasions, he has appeared to drift in his train of thought when making public addresses or speaking to the media. Critics claim these are signs of deteriorating mental capacity, which Biden supporters deny. https://www.rt.com/news/553924-biden-handshake-offer-video/

Russia’s total external debt has fallen in the first quarter to its lowest level since 2009, amounting to $453.5 billion as of April 1, data from the Bank of Russia showed on Wednesday. The debt has decreased by $26.5 billion, or 5.5%, according to the regulator. “The dynamics of the indicator was mainly affected by the reduction in foreign debt of other sectors,” the central bank said. The record quarterly decrease in Russia’s foreign debt levels – by $81 billion – occurred in the fourth quarter of 2014 after the introduction of Western sanctions and the subsequent fall in oil prices. The slide continued for three consecutive quarters. However, the level of foreign debt then was significantly higher than now, a record $732.8 billion as of July 1, 2014. According to the Bank of Russia, the external debt of the private sector (banks and other sectors) shrank by $16.2 billion over the first quarter of 2022, to $367.4 billion. The debt of state administration bodies and the central bank diminished by $10.3 billion to $86.1 billion, data showed. https://www.rt.com/business/553822-russia-debt-shrinks/
