The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the announcement by INEC that it will hold a supplementary election after declaring last Saturday's governorship poll in Anambra inconclusive, insisting that only the total cancellation of the election will be acceptable.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also called on INEC to come clear on how the election was sabotaged.

APC accused INEC of not taking seriously the opinions of Anambra residents as well as local and foreign observers that most of the registered voters in the state were disenfranchised during the election.

"First, the electoral commission proposed make-up election in only 65 polling units in Obosi before scaling things up to a supplementary election 'in those areas where election was cancelled'. But we say, without equivocating, that a total cancellation of the election and the organization of a fresh poll, under the supervision of a credible Resident Electoral Commissioner, will be acceptable to our party," it said.

"It is not enough for INEC's Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to tell the nation that an INEC official sabotaged the election in a certain part of the state, he must tell the nation who this fellow is, who he/she is working for, what is the extent of the damage he/she has done to this and previous elections, and whether or not he/she has access to the commission's database of voters' register, which was apparently tampered with for Saturday's election.

"Prof. Jega must also tell Nigerians why 16 Electoral Commissioners, who migrated to Anambra days before the election ostensibly to supervise things, could not ensure the success of an election in a single state, when even a polling unit behind the INEC office in Awka did not get voting materials till after 9 am on election day," it said.

Meanwhile, the APC has accused the PDP of being an accessory to the election anomaly in Anambra, going by the statement credited to the party that the election was free and fair.

Impact on Families

Gambling problems hurt families in many ways:

Money problems: When family members learn that savings, property or belongings have been lost, it can make them feel scared, angry and betrayed.

Emotional problems and isolation: Gambling problems cause strong feelings among family members, which make it harder to solve problems. Many partners of those with gambling problems do not want to be emotionally or physically close with the person who has hurt them. Family members may avoid other people, because they feel ashamed. This makes it hard to get love and support.

Physical and mental health: The stress of gambling problems sometimes causes health problems, for both the person who gambles and the family. This can include anxiety, depression and stress-related problems such as poor sleep, ulcers, bowel problems, headaches and muscle pains.

Burnout: Many families under stress have trouble coping. One member may try to keep things in control by taking on more tasks. This can lead to burnout. Family members often forget to take care of themselves or to have fun.

Impact on children: When a parent or caregiver has a gambling problem, children can feel forgotten, depressed and angry. They may believe they caused the problem and that if they are good, the problem will stop. Children may believe they must take sides between their parents. They may stop trusting a parent who makes promises he or she doesn't keep. Some children may try to draw attention away from the parent with the gambling problem by misbehaving.

Anxiety and Depression

Many people who gamble excessively feel stressed, anxious and depressed. This can make sleeping, thinking and solving problems more difficult.

If you have some of the following symptoms for more than two weeks, making your day-to-day life difficult, you may have chronic depression:

You have lost interest in usual activities.
You feel depressed, down in the dumps or irritable.
Your sleep has changed (e.g., you have problems falling asleep or staying asleep, or you sleep too much).
Your appetite has changed. You have lost or gained weight.
You feel helpless, hopeless or despairing.
It is hard to think and to remember things, and your thoughts seem slower.
You go over and over guilty feelings. You cant stop thinking about problems.
You have lost interest in sex.
You feel physically tired, slow and heavy; or you feel restless and jumpy.
You feel angry.
You think about suicide.

If you have any of these difficulties, speak to your family doctor or other health care professional (a gambling counselor can also make sure you get the help you need). Tell him or her about your gambling problems too. Treatment may include medications and/or counseling and other support.
Suicide Risk

Rates of suicide are higher for people who gamble excessively, and for their family members. The people most likely to attempt suicide are those who also have mental health problems (like depression) or who heavily use alcohol or other drugs. People who have threatened suicide or hurt themselves in the past are also more at risk. If you feel suicidal or are making plans to end your life, get help right away. You don't have to deal with your problems alone. For more advice, see the box on this page.

If you are thinking about ending your life:

Remove any means for ending your life (e.g., firearms, medications).
Let your family or a friend know how you are feeling.
Call the local Distress Center for support and information.
Let your doctor know what is going on, including your gambling.

Talk to someone you trust, such as a friend or spiritual adviser.

It is the companion of willpower. It gives you with the stamina to persevere with whatever you do.
It is the strength to withstand physical, emotional and mental hardships and difficulties.
It stands for perseverance and tenacity.
It is the ability to reject immediate satisfaction, pleasure or comfort, in order to gain something better, but which requires effort and time.

With these skills, you have the option to choose your behavior and reactions, instead of being ruled by them. They make you feel more powerful and in charge of yourself.

There is a misconception in the public mind regarding willpower and self-discipline. It is erroneously believed that their development and use require a lot of mental and physical strain and effort. This is not true. You can develop them in a gradual, simple way, by practicing certain exercises, and even enjoy the process.
How to Strengthen Your Willpower and Self-Discipline

A simple and most efficient technique to strengthen these skills is by doing things, which you would rather avoid doing, due to laziness, procrastination, weakness, shyness, etc.

By carrying out such actions, in spite of your inner resistance you overcome your subconscious resistance.

As muscles get stronger by resisting the weight of barbells, so inner strength is attained by overcoming inner resistance.
Exercises

1) You are sitting in a bus or train and an old man or woman, or a pregnant lady walks in. Stand up and give up your seat, even if you prefer to stay seated. Act so, not just because it is polite, but because you are doing something that you are reluctant to do. This is an exercise in overcoming the resistance of your body, mind and feelings.

2) There are dishes in the sink that need washing, and you postpone washing them for later. Get up and wash them now. Do not let laziness control you. When you know that in this way, you are actually strengthening yourself, it becomes easier to take immediate action, despite laziness and the desire to procrastinate.

3) You come home from work and sit in front of the T.V., because you feel too lazy and too tired to take a shower first. Do not succumb to the desire to sit in front of the T.V, and go take a shower immediately.

4) Do you like your coffee with sugar? If you do, then for one whole week drink it without sugar. Do you drink three cups of coffee each day? If you do, then drink only two cups a day for one whole week. Such exercises prove to you that you can control or change your habits, and this inner strength.

5)Do you, like many others, like to read some unimportant gossip in the newspaper or magazine? Then for one whole week abstain from doing so. This might not be easy, but it's a good training. I am not telly you to do so indefinitely, but only one week.

6) If you have the choice of going up with the elevator or climbing the stairs, choose climbing the stairs. However, climb the stairs only if it's not a high storey and you are in good physical condition.

These are very simple exercises, which you can certainly do. Remember, the purpose of the exercises is to develop inner strength, not to make life difficult for you.

If you practice weight lifting, running or aerobics, you strengthen your muscles, and therefore, when you need to move or carry something heavy, you have the strength for it. By studying a foreign language, you will be able to speak it fluently when you are abroad.

It is the same with willpower and self-discipline. By strengthening them, you make them available for use, whenever you need them.

Willpower and self-discipline are vital for achieving success.
