Technology Market / What Do You Think About Hosting A Startup Grind In Kaduna? by sigoje: 11:34pm On Jun 05, 2015
Hey guys, cheesy
Wouldn't it be nice to do meetups in Kaduna? Here developers and aspiring IT entrepreneurs and angel investors can network with the goal of starting tech businesses right here in Kaduna. I realised how important this when I started work on an localised e-commerce platform. It is difficult to find help and I think we can change that!

So I want to bring Startup Grind to KD. It's work in progress. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR EMAIL HERE OR SEND ME AN EMAIL to gojesamaila@gmail.com. I will update you when we are ready to go or on any other thing you may need to know

Thanks

Business / Over 300 E-commerce Start-up, Why I Think There's Room For Us by sigoje: 2:07pm On Apr 30, 2015
(For sake of transparency, this text was culled from HelpasClub page on Facebook, happy read). The existing operators are independent storefronts, marketplaces, auctioning sites and social networks. However, even though all these operators use different business models and web technology they all target the same buyer, the online retail customer. Our industry therefore includes but is not limited to e-commerce, P2P/ B2P/P2B business networking, marketplace for local business, job search and contract jobs, carpooling, travel, hotel and other bookings and reservation, cloud computing services to SMES, delivery service networks, business directory/maps, crowdfunding, P2P lending, crowd sourcing, advertising, and marketing, social networking, photo-sharing, messenger, taxi e-hailing, online renting and house sale agency and online ads and content marketing.

(1)    (a)  E Commerce turnover is presently over $35 billion, projected to reach $ 200 billion in 5 years. The Nigerian retail market itself is presently $ 115 billion, with 73% of Nigerians shopping in open air markets and 63% in convenience stores. Some 45% of Nigerians have internet access but only 2% shop online at least once a month.

- This is a growth market, the projections and statistics point to an opportunity for investors in the ecommerce space in the foreseeable future.

(b) There are over 300 firms in the Industry, which has dominant players in each niche. Jumia is dominant retailer with 70% of market share of online retail in 2011, followed by Konga whose popularity has steadily risen. Kaymu leads auctioning site for used items, OLX and Mobofree are also important here; Dealsdey is foremost online discount and deals platform. Marketplace players are Konga marketplace and GT marketplace. Afrocab and Eazytaxy are pioneering taxi e-hailing; Lendico is in online lending.

Same investors follow the pattern of making multiple investment in diverse niches of the industry, operating as internet conglomerates. Reflecting oligopolistic competition, major investors are African Internet Holdings, Naspers and Iroko Partners. Tech incubators play an important role such as as L5lab and CcHub.

- This is a fragmented market, new entrants can penetrate by attending to a niche market and solving unmet needs.

(c) Large capital outlay in the online retailer space, due to logistics and support services. Jumia’s capital outlay was $75 million to start up, reflecting the large capital needed to succeed.Jumia has not turned a profit yet, as it follows the typical internet model of re-investing revenue into the business.Konga, the second biggest player now has foreign investors.

- For well funded ventures this represents a temporary competitive advantage.

(d) There is a low barrier to entry in terms of technology. The operators of e-commerce sites are heavily reliant on cloned websites and business models of successful ventures in the US.

- Entrepreneurs, with access to developers, start-up and operating funds and competent management can replicate and adapt foreign models rather than experiment and build from scratch.

 (e) With e-commerce set grow there is opportunity in the low income consumer segment which is yet to be exploited. Existing middle income market is yet to be fully served, especially outside major sites.

- Entrants that focus on these markets can create a foothold in the industry.

(e)  Challenges facing the industry are slow mobile connection, same day delivery, poor transport infrastructure, reliability and security of transactions over the internet, cash on delivery versus mobile payment; cost of recruiting competent computer engineers.

- Entrants can quickly gain market by addressing these challenges.

There is demand for online order of foreign goods either due quality, availability or price. Buyers go to sites such as eBay or alibaba. Local entrants in this market include ShopAmerica and MallforAfrica.

With the proliferation of programming languages which programme should I use (in some cases first learn) to develop a Pinterest clone? I know instagram was created with HTML 5 and Facebook uses C++, but now you have python, ruby on rails etc. That's a few too many..

Hello,

My name is Samaila, (see my profile ng.LinkedIn.com/in/gojesamaila/en). Would you be interested in helping me... by signing up for a private alpha release of a web/mobile app I am working on? smiley

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

Helpasclub is been designed to be online social network I hope will be a free discovery media for users to find buyers for what they want to sell /service they offer; or find sellers for what they want to buy, with help from family and friends on the network.

The assumption is discovery is a major hassle for home based sole proprietors/businesses, particularly run by stay-at-home mums, who want to support their families or themselves. For instance these mums may not have the leeway, free time or resources to make physical sales calls or set up a shop. Indeed not even time to go out and shop for the household.

The product will prove the assumption you can do these online by going through your primary contacts who will bring on their network, so you have an extended network and you can reach more people. HelpasClub is based on a third assumption that you have people that like you enough to help want to succeed to share your uploads of items or offerings you make, across other platforms such as whatsapp, twitter, instaagram and Facebook

We hope it's value is easily discoverable, so a baker hears about it and thinks: l can reduce the pressure of selling to strangers by asking my friends to join the network to help me find and back me up with interested buyers of my offering

Same baker may think, I can remove the stress from shopping for my kids' clothes by importing pictures she saw online, posting it and tag friends, asking them to join to help find what she want or sellers she can trust

Starting is easy. Register a profile, add friends, post what you want and friends of your friends can see and engage you whether to buy or sell to you

SEND ME AN EMAIL, gojesamaila@zulesocial.com, TO ADD YOU TO OUR SIGN UP LIST smiley

Thanks

Politics / Can Christian Clergy Endorse A Political Office Candidate? by sigoje: 11:12am On Feb 13, 2015
Following a news flash of a Christian group endorsing the APC presidential Mr. Moh'd Buhari, on behalf of northern Christian clergy, I felt dismayed. Surely the individuals have a right to pick who they wish for what ever reason they have. They may even be representive of the feelings of a significant population. However it is a misrepresentation of the Christian faith as understood by me, for any one to claim to be Christian clergy and side with a political aspirant. A Christian clergy person is a sacred role, a mouthpiece for the Word of God. What ever these men's good motive may be, the call to be a Christian leader is holy and not be used for any political end whatever the justification. I call on Christian leaders NOT to speak and act in reaction to the emotional and social pressures sweeping the society today, but to do like the ancient Hebrew scribes who ahead of the coming of the Messiah studied the Scripture more intently, to discern the times. Then to guide layman as to the what the Scriptures tell

TV/Movies / Rurouni Kenshin The Legend Ends by sigoje: 9:33am On Jan 20, 2015
If u thought 'Samurai X' was the greatest cartoon you watched growing up. Fast forward a decade, Battuosai, Kenshin is on feature film, and simply the most awesome sword fighting movie I remember seeing since Troy. Oh my..

A few spoilers, it's in Japanese, English subtitle. If you are used to Hollywood, you will need to adjust to Japanese style of storytelling. Some familiar faces from the cartoon died. And there is no sequel- embarassed

Dating And Meet-up Zone / Re: Any Free Online Dating Site Out There, That's Not Badoo? by sigoje: 2:06pm On Nov 09, 2014
Badoo, is legit. I installed cause it's really popular on like bloomberg news, they there'r like 400 million users globally. So it works abroad I guess. I have ran into some interesting people still. Just that the developers need to put a flagging system, to take down these LovePeddler accounts when people report, since this naija. So the rest of us can have a decent good time

Programming / Re: Applying For Patent In Nigeria by sigoje: 12:18pm On Oct 29, 2014
If your application is good it will be cloned, patent doesn't stop it. You can only patent your methodology, but a good programmer can find alternative ways of reaching the result, perhaps faster. I recommend you look for smart people to leverage your first mover advantage so you can reach critical mass quickly and remain dominant I your space.
