Trade by barter is still fairly common today, just that we no longer call it that name, think of concepts such as phone swapping, sex-for grades, sex-for-rent, etc.

But just like every other concept in economics and life in general, there are advantages and disadvantages. People often tend to over-estimate the value of their goods and services hence there's almost always friction when it comes to trade by barter. I see it a lot on this platform also, someone wants to swap a phone for a newer model or maybe another electronic gadget and he's basing his valuation on how much he bought the phone 2 years ago, and not on the current state of wear and tear.
