The rule of a 100th says that if you put in100 hours in a year into consistent practice of any discipline of choice, maybe violin, piano, artistry, etc... you'll be better than 95% of persons practicing that discipline. This can be broken into 18 minutes a day. You may not have known how long it will take you to learn that skill. But if you can put in sufficient efforts and time into practicing it on daily and weekly bases then you'll be surprised by what you can achieve. Don't wait, forget the process, look at the impending results and believe. Time yourself and practice seriously, and you'll become who you really want to be. |
(For the privacy of the people involved, the real name of the individuals wouldn't be used) On the 14th of October 2022 in Agbura community, Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa state. Mrs. Martha was at her home with her 2 months old baby. Though she is married her husband is seldom around. He usually hangs out with his friends somewhere close by at a lodge or joint. Seeing the pace at which the flood water increases fast, people are always on alert to be ready to move their belongings fast. Mrs. Martha's environment was already flooded but wasn't inside her house yet. * ***** * ***** * ***** * ***** * ***** * It was a scene where people were gathered to see a baby brought out of the flooded room dead as he was submerged in water. So what happened? Well, there are two parts to the story. The first is, she left her sleeping baby at home, the water inside her room was at her feet level, even though she knew the water was rising slowly, one wouldn't expect it to take a jump in rising at a faster pace. So she went to -as usual gossip with her neighbors or fellow women & by the time she came back, the tragedy had occured. The second story is that she heard that her husband was hanging out with his friends to go and you know,,, enjoy themselves. She worried that her husband would have his way or spend time with another woman which he might have been doing other times. So she left the baby at her bed in her room & went to be with him or lay with him where ever he was (maybe at a lodge) so as to have her presence prevent him from trying to flirt or be with another lady. By the time she had finished being with him & she came back, the water had risen so fast that it had gone way higher over her bed level where the baby was sleeping. As you may think of it, the baby died. People of the community & media blames her for her negligence majorly stating that in the season & situation we find ourselves in this flood, parents are expected to have their eyes on their children all day long. What do you think of this? |
MAN STEAMED LIKE FISH In 2012, 62 years old Jose Melena was living in Los Angeles, a father to 6 & that has been working at Bumblebee foods for 5 years. One of his jobs at the plant was to load a 34 inches wide, 36 ft long high pallets of tuna in cans into the industrial oven. The oven sterilizes the tuna cans & processes the tuna in them. On October 11 by 4am, Jose arrived by Santa Spring plant where he worked, & almost immediately, one of the supervisors asked him to load an oven. Jose got the 12000 pounds of canned tuna on a dolly wheel to an oven. When he opened the oven door and saw a loose chain inside the back of the oven. Though he knew he wasn't to go inside it, he also knew he could fix the chain in a short time. Few hours later, the supervisor asked the others for Jose, they replied that they haven't seen him. They searched for him inside the plant and and still didn't find him and his work station at the oven was cleared. They called out to him on the intercom to come out to the office but he didn't show up and even his car was still parked outside. Wondering where he might be? Everyone again deliberately searched for him, and after he wasn't seen a worker suggested that they checked the oven he was last seen loading. So they turned off the ovens, waited 30 minutes for it's cooling down before it was safe for them to go inside. They opened the door and found Jose pressed against the door of the oven struggling to get free up against struggling to get free. He had already been cooked alive. So what really happened? Earlier on, Jose had gone inside the oven to fix that loose chain, he had left the 12000 pounds of tuna on the pallet dolly just outside the entrance to the oven. So another worker was walking outside along the row of ovens, he saw Jose's opened oven door which was blocking any view behind it and therefore he couldn't see inside of the oven. He saw the huge pallet of tuna sitting outside, he immediately assumed that Jose has gone to the rest room or taken a short break. Thinking he's helping, he walked over and pushed the pallet inside the oven and then shut the door locked without seeing Jose. Jose being caught off guard anytime after must have realized this, forced his way through the oven and pallet all the way to the door to bang, shout, or try to force his way out. There's no way his shouting would have been heard because after the co-worker locked the oven door, he immediately switched on the oven which generated so much noise that made it impossible to hear Jose's shout. He didn't actually get cooked immediately. The oven's heating process was very gradual, up 270 degrees over 2 hours. The human body can actually survive 200 degrees or a little more for up to 10 minutes, but at 212 degrees the blood will boil and it will kill the person. Unfortunately, there was no kill switch nor any emergency exits inside the oven. So Jose gotten to the door shouted and banged on it until he was slowly cooked to death. According to the deputy district attorney that prosecuted bumblebee foods in this cases lawsuit. He stated that this is the worst circumstance of death he's ever witnessed. Bumblebee foods paid Jose's family $1.5 million for compensation and damages, and also paid $3 million to upgrade all their industrial ovens. |
Malaria means bad air in Latin. It was called that because physicians thought the disease carried toxic vapours. The Europeans had no defense against malaria until the 17th century when a Jesuit priest in Peru came across Cinchona- a medicinal plant used by the natives. It was very bitter and was called quinine. Due to it's bitterness, it was mixed with carbonated water, sugar, alcohol, and lime therefore creating the gin and tonic. In the early 20th century, scientists began to make anti-malaria drugs, some of which were based on quinine's structure. The drugs worked but for a while because the parasite evolved and resisted. The first form of resistance was in 1958 from Southeast Asia to South America, and then Africa. In 1962 a drug called artemisinin was developed but for certain reasons it wasn't used until decades later. In 2008 in Cambodia, resistance to artemisinin was reported, same in 2012 in Thailand and Myanmar. The single celled plasmodium species of parasites are the cause of malaria. The female anopheles mosquito carries the infective form of this parasite known as sporozoite in the salivary gland. Malaria is spread when a mosquito bites a person with the parasite, carries it and bite another person. It's also transferred from mother to unborn child. Symptoms show up 7 to 18 days after red blood cells has been infected Only 5 of over 100 species of plasmodium species can cause malaria in humans • Plasmodium Falciparum • Plasmodium Vicax • Plasmodium Malariae • Plasmodium Ovale • Plasmodium Knowlesi Once plasmodium gets into the bloodstream, it infects red blood cells which causes various symptoms and maybe if unattended to, it causes death. Malaria is known to affect millions of persons, including: • Young children under 5 years old. • Pregnant women. • Patients with HIV/AIDS. • Travelers with no history of malaria disease. Tropical and subtropical areas such as Latin American, Sub-Saharan African, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, are the most affected. DIAGNOSIS Malaria is diagnosed by putting red blood Thick blood smear and then locating the parasite sitting in the red blood cell. Thin blood smear and then directly identifying the plasmodium parasite. It's important to know the percentage of infected red blood cells due to the fact that patients with over 5% parasitemia can have the worst outcomes. It is also diagnosed by observing low platelet count (Thrombocytopenia) in the patient. TREATMENT Malaria treatment includes: • Suppressive treatment (Chemoprophylaxis). This is aimed at killing sporozoites before they infect a parasite. It's given to travellers heading to malaria prone regions. • Therapeutic treatment. This is for eliminating merozoites still in the erythrocytic stage. It's given during an active infection. • Gametocidal treatment. This kills gametocytes and prevents the disease from spreading and creating forms of resistance. • Radical treatment. This is for killing hypnozoites in the liver from plasmodium vivax and plasmodium Ovale infections. Most cases of uncomplicated malaria resolve with treatment. After recovery, some persons still get the symptoms after a period of time. This is called recurrent malaria. Sometimes, the parasite stay up to a year in the body without showing symptoms. PREVENTION Anything that prevents its bite. Full body covering. Using insecticide sprays. Sleeping with insecticide covered mosquito nets. Empty stagnant collections of Waters in your environment. Malaria is known to be the fastest killing disease on Earth, known to kill it's victim in three days if not treated. So many organizations has been set up to reduce malaria infection to the minimum of which this is mostly supported by the government of each regions. Every year there's a malaria awareness and orientation program which holds at different times in different parts of the world. |
