Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has condemned the Friday attack by members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ilase and Ibokun in Obokun Local Government of the state. Governor Aregbesola who described the attack as dastardly and barbaric said several APC members were injured in the attack, with posters of contestants, APC flags and the podium on which the governor was to address the gathering seriously damaged. The Governor, in a statement issued by his Director Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, also alleged that an APC woman member’s ear was slashed with matchet and was quickly rushed to an undisclosed hospital. It was gathered that the governor had gone to Obokun Local Government to campaign for his party and its contestants for various positions when the PDP members attacked the APC members. An eye witness account revealed that Aregbesola and his entourage had gone to pay homage to the Ilase monarch when the crisis started. PDP members suspected to have been sponsored by Ade Fadahunsi, the senatorial candidate of the PDP in Osun East senatorial district. The hoodlums were said to have shot into the air sporadically to scare the waiting APC crowd before freely destroying the flags, posters and the campaign podium. People had to scamper for safety as the PDP thugs had a field day unleashing mayhem on innocent people. The governor on his return to the campaign ground, said he was shocked with what he saw, describing it “callous and condemnable.” Aregbesola therefore called on security agencies to investigate the unprovoked attack against APC in the area and call on PDP to desist from this ignoble act. Aregbesola was quoted as saying, “We, as a party, are responsible and peace-loving. We are loved by the people. “It is those who do not have electoral value that will attack the same people they ought to patronise for votes. “We are popular and we are on ground. This people resort to violence because they know that they don’t have the support of the people. “We however remain undaunted. We will not the cowed by anybody in the state. In the last four years, my government has restored peace to the state. We call on security agencies to be proactive and deal with anyone, whose sole agenda is to cause violence in the state,” Aregbesola said. He however called on APC members to remain calm and law abiding, saying they should refrain from returning violence for violence. http://nigeriapoliticsonline.com/elections-apc-raises-alarm-over-continued-attacks-on-members/ |
The Plateau State Emergency Management Agency has said 70,000 Internally Displaced Persons are currently taking refuge in the state. The SEMA Director of Administration, Mr Biser Longnam, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos on Thursday that the IDPs were from the Northeast states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. Longnam said some of the displaced persons were from Nasarawa and Taraba states, who left their homes because of communal clashes. “We have 70, 000 IDPs currently in the state, 36,000 of them are taking refuge at different locations in Plateau North senatorial district. “Some of the IDPs are camping in Namu in Quan’Pan Local Government area and other places in the Southern part of the state,” he said. Longnam, however, said the state government could no longer continue to cater to the IDPs in the camps because of dwindling resources. The director appealed to corporate organisations, philanthropists and others to support the government in catering to the IDPs. Longnam commended Rotary International, which recently donated some relief materials to IDPs. “It is through humanitarian gestures like this that we will be able to assist the IDPs in the state. “We appeal to organisations of like minds to assist the IDPs to alleviate their sufferings while they wait for the return of peace in their areas,” he said. The director said the state government had been assisting the victims with foodstuffs, toiletries, clothing and drugs to mitigate their sufferings. Longnam also said the agency had made arrangements with the state Ministry of Education so that children in the IDPs’ camps could be absorbed into schools. http://www.punchng.com/news/70000-idps-taking-refuge-in-plateau-sema/ |

PDP and violence they are 1 party |
The All Progressives Congress has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of planning to cause disorder during its road show scheduled to hold in Ekiti State on Wednesday. The party claimed that some PDP leaders were planning to use thugs wearing APC T-shirts to infiltrate the rally and foment violence. In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC also accused the PDP of planning to cause mayhem in the South-West before, during and after the forthcoming elections to mar the polls. It, therefore, called on security agents to be on the alert during the road show in Ekiti and, indeed, all through the South-West as the elections approach. The party said, ‘’Scared stiff about the success of the one-million-march in Lagos last Saturday and worried about the successful rally being repeated in Ekiti State and others, the PDP has perfected a devilish plan to cause mayhem during the Ekiti road show. The APC T-shirts being sewn will be given to their thugs, who will then be mandated to infiltrate the road show and start a fight. “Beyond that, the party has perfected a scheme to take the military and police uniforms being sewn in Ado-Ekiti to Akure, where they will be worn by thugs for the purpose of intimidating APC supporters before and during the elections. Already, a special task force under one Soji Bello has been set up in Ondo State with the express mandate of attacking and beating up all known supporters of the APC in Ondo State while another team has been mandated to cause mayhem in the Hausa-dominated Sabo and Shasha areas of the Ondo State capital, Akure. The party said it was raising the alarm to expose the plans and to put the nation’s security agencies on the alert, as well as to alert the international community. While restating the commitment of the APC to violence-free polls, the party said the PDP should learn from its campaign which “has not recorded any violent incident.” It said that despite the massive turnout ofLagosiansfor the one-million-man march held in Lagos on Saturday, the march was violence-free. The party warned, “We, therefore, urge those who are doing everything possible to make a peaceful change impossible to realise that they are being watched closely by Nigerians and the international community, and for them to realise that there will be no hiding place for them either within or outside Nigeria if they carry out their dastardly plans. Today, the world has zero tolerance for perpetrators of mindless killings, chaos and violence.” http://www.punchng.com/politics/pdp-plans-violence-in-ekiti-apc/ |
