Settings- sync-Add Account- IMAP/POP3.
After reading your initial post, may I ask if you have contacts saved in your Yahoo mail that you intend to be saved into your device?

Sure, I can even see the contacts on the yahoo app

Have you added your Yahoo mail to your account in settings or you are just logged in with the Yahoo app on your phone?
