At a time Nigeria seems to be wondering in wilderness of political, economical and social blindless occassioned by over half a decade misrule of a political class that have proven to be deprived of administrative know-how to show the fortunes of a naturally endowed Nation like Nigeria with human and capital wealth. This alone has remained a shocker to the planet , and 2015 so far will still hunt the conscience of each sincere Nigerian that played a task during this grandstanding.

Then came the ray of sunshine in 2019 as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar challenged the established order with resolute onslaught to undo midiocrity and provides Nigeria a replacement leave of life to be repositioned to the trail of progressive planning.

Before then, they came with campaign of slander, assassination and media trial of nonexistent fraud. The challenge to proffer a case or initiate a legal prcess to deal with that (as a government fighting corruption) was met with silence as there was no offense within the first place. That propaganda too, like others love it , died a natural death.

While the hope of Nigerians was dashed during a broad day robbery that saw the cabals hang unto power at the detriment of the Nigerian masses in 2019, the person who has come on a mission to deal with the lapses of leadership in Nigeria with the intent of passing leadership to a younger generation, has not given in yet. The more reason why the spines of the puvayors are in jitters.

Let us check out the explanations why Alhaji Atiku remains the simplest option for 2023.

The Atiku Abubakar Foundation for the less privileged may be a foundation which was founded earlier within the year 2019 to represent and assist the less privileged persons who are helpless in other to survive through legitimate means.

He spoke on COVID-19 and how it is being contained in Abia State.

Since the outbreak of this Corona pandemic especially when it became prominent, the Nigeria Government had to respond with so many measures in order to contain the spread.
The state governments also introduced lots of measures which are in tune with what the federal government has marshalled out including providing facemasks and observance of social distancing in public places, the churches, market places.
Of cause you’ll recall that sometimes the state introduced a total lockdown in the state and businesses were closed including Government offices.
Everything was shut down and people were not even allowed to walk on the streets. At that time there was no record of any case in Abia State till when we had two cases that were reported at the Federal Medical Centre here in Umuahia.

Before the people were asked to open their businesses they are expected to have hand sanitizers, keep a bucket of water and soap and all that in the business places before anyone enters, that person must wash his hands and things like that.
If you come to transport area, Keke people were asked to carry only two people and they must be on facemasks. There is this bus we call ‘oke bekee’ here. They were asked to carry only six persons, so two in a row. Everybody must also be on facemasks.
Borders we’re shut and Government also imposed its own curfew from 6pm in the night till 6am in the morning before the federal government introduced its own from 8pm to 6am which is currently running now.
Government has also put in measure that markets should run for 3 days in a week. You have Monday from 8am in the morning till 4pm also on Wednesdays and Fridays, that’s 3 times in a week. Also for the markets, they have to wear masks between the sellers and the buyers and they have to keep running water were people would wash their hands before they can be attended to. And also sanitizers.

Palliatives
Also government has gone ahead with some palliative measures which you may have heard. Government started with churches where they gave food items to give to indigent ones.
All the churches in Abia state got the palliatives. We also went ahead to provide palliatives for those who don’t come to church through traditional rulers.

Borders
Furthermore Government has locked down borders. So persons no longer enter and movement is now within the state which is also from that 6am to 8pm in the evening. For Keke operators movement is 6am to 4pm everyday. So that is how it is now.

Abia’s COVID-19 cases are still very low

I can say that the number we have recorded is just the special grace of God because the number we have recorded have been discharged so it’s in fact a thing of grace that it is only this number that we have recorded.
But then, Government has brought in testing machine into the state. I think that will help because before now, samples were taken to testing centres in Ebonyi State and that makes it hard for more persons to be tested but now that it is here, I think we will now be sure whether we have or not. It was installed a few days ago.

The Rivers State Government has withdrawn the charges it preferred against two pilots of Caverton Helicopters Limited, Mr. Samuel Ugorji and Mr. Samuel Buhari, and their 10 passengers before the Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate’s Court.


The state government had arrested the pilots and their passengers in the wake of the imposition of restrictions on movements and closure of the state borders to check the spread of COVID-19.



They were subsequently arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s court on April 7 and remanded in custody for allegedly intentionally disobeying the Executive Order issued by the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, aimed at checking the spread of the virus in the state.


The Chief Magistrate Court, presided over by D. D. Ihua-Maduenyi, on April 14, granted the two pilots and their passengers bail.



At the resumption of the trial yesterday, the Rivers State Government, through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zaccheus Adangor, withdrew the case.



A statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Paulinus Nsirim, yesterday stated that the state had withdrawn and discontinued the two separate charges: PMC/532C/2020 and PMC/533C/2020 preferred against the two pilots and the 10 passengers on board before the Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate’s Court.

“Consequently, the presiding Chief Magistrate, D. D. Ihua-Maduenyi, has struck out the two charges and discharged all the defendants,” he The court had remanded the two pilots in prison custody for allegedly disobeying the Executive Order.

However, Caverton Helicopters had denied any wrongdoing, explaining that it received approval from the Minister of Aviation to operate essential services during the lockdown.

But the pilots were on trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy to commit misdemeanour to wit: disobedience to lawful order, intentionally disobeying the lawful order issued by the Governor of Rivers State as contained in paragraph 8 of the Executive Order RVSG -01 2020 made pursuant to Sections 2, 4, and 8 of Quarantine Act Cap. Q2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and Regulation 11 of the Quarantine (Coronavirus (COVID-19 ) and other infectious diseases) regulations, 2020, by flying the Twin-Otter Caverton Helicopters into Air Force Base, Port Harcourt and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 5 of the Quarantine Act Cap Q2 LFN , 2004.

They were also accused of conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by flying and discharging passengers, and for intentionally disobeying the lawful order issued by the governor on restriction of movements and flights within the state contrary to paragraph 8 of the Executive Order RVSG -01 2020.

Saying it was tired of taking the blame for the flagrant violation of COVID-19 restriction guidelines, the police yesterday began strict enforcement of the nationwide curfew and interstate travel ban imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari two weeks ago.

The police commands, particularly in Lagos and Ogun States as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Muhammed Adamu, locked down their areas of operation from 8 pm, insisting that there was no exemption for anybody including essential workers.

The virus’ infection tally increased by 226 to 6,401 yesterday sparing 1,734 that had been discharged while 192 had died.

The new cases were reported from 16 states, including Lagos 131, Ogun 25, Plateau 15, Edo 11, Kaduna seven, Oyo six, FCT five, Adamawa five, Jigawa four, Ebonyi four, Borno four, Nasarawa three, Bauchi two, Gombe two, Enugu one, and Bayelsa, one.

The president had with effect from May 4 relaxed the lockdown of FCT, Lagos and Ogun States he had imposed on March 30, emplacing a nationwide curfew from 8 pm to 6 am and a ban on interstate travel. He, however, maintained the exemption of essential workers, including health workers, and journalists as well as movement of food, medicines, and other essentials.

However, state governors and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 complained loudly that security agencies were not enforcing the guidelines effectively, leading to rampant disobedience by citizens.

Yesterday, the task force ordered strict enforcement of the curfew and the travel ban.

Complying, police boss Adamu had a teleconference with the top brass of the force and directed strict enforcement of the restrictions, rescinding the pass given to journalists and health workers to operate beyond 8 pm and warning that anyone, including ministers found on the road during the curfew would be arrested and prosecuted.

But following outcry and pressure, Adamu last night rescinded his non-exemption directive and restored the privilege of essential workers to move during the curfew.

In a terse statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba said: “All essential workers including medical personnel, firefighters, ambulance services, journalists, etc are exempted from the restriction of movement associated with both the partial lockdown and the national curfew across the federation.

“The IG, Mohammed Adamu has therefore directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commands Commissioners of Police to give effect to these exemptions whilst enforcing the restriction orders.”

The Lagos State Command Commissioner, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, had earlier yesterday confirmed that there would be no movement of essential workers by 8 pm, stressing that “once it is 8 pm, there will be no more human or vehicular movement.”

When contacted, the Force spokesperson, DCP Frank Mba stressed that the curfew had now been extended to everyone, including policemen and government officials.

Mba made this disclosure after THISDAY sought clarifications on the strict enforcement directive reeled out by the IG.

He said: “Nobody is exempted from the curfew – absolutely nobody. Even policemen who are not on duty have been warned to stay back in the office once it’s 8 pm.”

When asked about journalists, he reiterated that nobody was exempted, including government officials, adding that the policemen will enforce the IG’s directive to the letter.

In a press statement issued by Mba, the IG ordered strict enforcement of the national curfew and interstate movement restriction orders emplaced by the federal government.

The IG gave this directive to the zonal assistant inspectors general of police and state commissioners of police during a virtual conference.

According to the statement issued by Mba, the police hierarchy reviewed operational strategies and took decisive measures aimed at evolving customised security solutions to cope with crime trends and other security challenges relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The IG, while evaluating security reports from various states commands, charged the Commissioners of Police particularly in states with recent incidents of attacks on communities, to rejig their security architecture to forestall further attacks and keep the communities safe and secure for the citizenry. The IG also expressed concerns over reports bordering on human rights infractions between the public and personnel of the force. He, therefore, called for mutual respect between the public and members of the force and charged the strategic managers to place more premiums on the supervision of police personnel under their watch,” the statement explained.

FG Holds Self-medication Responsible for Most COVID-19 Deaths

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has linked most of the COVID-19 deaths recorded in the country to self-medication and delayed reports of cases to treatment centres.

He told reporters yesterday in Abuja during the media briefing by the PTF that Nigerians should be prepared for the best or worst outcomes in the days ahead.

He said whatever the progress that would be recorded or lack of it would depend on the level of compliance with safety measures and health advisories outlined by the authorities.

Ehanire noted that there had been a disturbing picture emerging whereby many of the casualties were drawn from well-to-do persons who chose to remain at home to receive treatment until their cases became worse.

He said: “Even though this (fatality) figure seems low compared to other countries, a disturbing picture emerging from statistics is that not only are most fatalities observed to be linked with pre-existing diseases, many are educated, well-to-do people, who chose home-based care where they develop sudden complication and have to be rushed to the hospital. Experience is showing that breathing complications in COVID-19 patients can arise with little or no notice. This is an added reason why all persons should seek medical attention when they test positive.”

He advised infected persons not to delay action but to seek immediate medical attention.

On the status of recovered health workers, the minister explained that the practice is for them to observe 14 days of monitoring during which they are expected to recover fully from hospital stress.

The minister also spoke on the use of hand sanitisers, adding that some of the brands in the market do not meet the required specifications.

He advised members of the public to always check out for the approving stamp by NAFDAC.

“A study carried out by a department in the Ministry of Health has shown that not all the hand sanitisers are up to standards. So in buying sanitiser, there is an advisory on it. You must look out for the NAFDAC number.

“Secondly, it should have a place where the ingredients are displayed, among these ingredients, you must see that it contains about 60 per cent alcohol,” he said.

Ehanire also cautioned that Hydroxychloroquine should only be used based on a doctor’s prescription.

FG Trains 12,000 Health Workers

The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, at the press conference, said about 12,000 health workers nationwide had so far received special training on tackling infectious diseases.

He added that some key aspects of healthcare services have also benefited significantly from measures being adopted to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

He said adequate and proper use of personal protective equipment was necessary to prevent health workers from contracting the virus from patients.

“Given that we didn’t learn sufficiently from Lassa fever outbreak, now is for us to learn collectively from COVID-19. Today, we have trained close to 12,000 health workers and this is an ongoing process,” he stated.

Buhari Celebrates ‘Irreplaceable’ Nigerian Professor Who Recovered in UK

The president yesterday joined the United Kingdom to celebrate a Nigerian-born renowned and “irreplaceable” consultant surgeon in the UK, Prof. Olagunju Ogunbiyi, who was discharged from a hospital in London after recovering from COVID-19.

A statement by presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, said Ogunbiyi had taught several generations of UK doctors and had remained an eminent surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital, one of London’s leading reference hospitals.

According to him, he was under care for two-and-a-half weeks and has now recovered.

Shehu said a hospital source described Ogunbiyi as “irreplaceable” adding: “Such was the regard he was held in the UK healthcare community.”

The president, on behalf of all Nigerians wishes Ogunbiyi quick recuperation and early return to work.

A message circulating on social media about the professor and colorectal surgeon at Royal Free Hospital, yesterday, said after being infected with the virus, the best of UK doctors battled to save Ogunbiyi’s life.

According to the message, aside from being humble despite being highly placed, Ogunbiyi, upon his discharge from the hospital was received by a large gathering of hospital staff celebrating his recovery.

NCDC Conducts 35,983 tests, Says Only One Done in Kogi

A situation report released yesterday by the NCDC showed that out of 35,983 tests carried out in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) so far, Kogi and Cross River states have the lowest figures of samples tested.

The two states are yet to record any positive COVID-19 case.

While Kogi has only tested one sample, Cross River has tested seven samples, all of which returned negative for COVID-19.

According to the data, Lagos has tested the highest number of persons with 14,886 samples, followed by the FCT and Kano with 4,688 and 2,653 samples tested, respectively.

No Invoice from Madagascar for Herbal Drug, FG Insists

The federal government has denied receiving any invoice from Madagascar in respect of the consignment of the herbal mixture touted as a cure for COVID-19, which was delivered at the weekend to Buhari by the President of Guinea Bissau, President Umaru Embalo, who was in Abuja on an official visit.

Reports had claimed that the Indian Ocean Island country had handed Nigeria an invoice of 170,000 Euros (N78 million) as the cost of five cartons of COVID- organics.

But Mustapha said at the press briefing that he did not receive any invoice for the drugs.

“In terms of the question of whether it comes with a cost, well it was handed to me without an invoice. So, I assume it doesn’t come at any cost. That is my assumption. For that, I think the Madagascar issue and the Chinese issue should be laid to rest because these two issues are not central to the problem that we have at hand now. So, we should try as much as possible to minimise the judicious use of our time to deal with important issues.

“I am going to engage the Minister of Health who has the responsibility of validation through his institutions that are chartered by law to do that and the president was upfront with that even when he took the delivery from the President of Guinea-Bissau. He said it quite clear that what we were going to do with the consignment will be guided by science. After the processes of validation, we will now know where to go,” Mustapha stated.

He urged Nigerians to learn from the history of global pandemic, notably the plaque of 1919-20, which was replete with evidence of an exponential rise in pandemic upon early lifting of restrictions.

Mustapha said the decision by the federal government to extend the curfew and restrict interstate movements for another two weeks until June 1, was inspired by caution, current experiences from different countries and the lesson from the influenza pandemic of 1919, which claimed more than five million souls following a spike in the cases after restrictions were lifted.

“This well-considered decision was taken out of an abundance of caution, current experiences from different countries and expert advice. I must add also that we were persuaded by the history of global pandemics because it is replete with evidence of exponential rise in pandemic upon early lifting of restrictions, for which the 1918 – 1920 influenza remains the most recent example in human history.

“Nigeria, judging from these historical perspectives, must in our present approach, delicately maintain a balance between safety and economic considerations before we reopen the economy fully. Again, I wish to repeat that the decision is not punitive; we share your pains and also share your concerns. However, our future remains in our hands and compliance is one of the keys to opening that future,” Mustapha said.

National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Aliyu Sani, at the briefing said: “The PTF certainly appreciates the adverse impact this is having on people’s livelihood but as I keep on saying, we are trying to balance saving lives with saving livelihood. We are in the process of moving towards further relaxation of the lockdown but as far as the next two weeks are concerned nothing has changed.

“We have been given approval by Mr. President to extend those same conditions we had two weeks ago for very good reasons. One, being that we are not convinced that the time has come in terms of the impact of the pandemic to further relax those restrictions.

“As we all know, the level of compliance with some of those guidelines we have provided has been limited at best in some areas and we have to make sure that whatever we do in terms of taking actions or decisions we do not drag ourselves back to the beginning of the pandemic again. We do appreciate this. It is one of the things, we will continue to consider as we monitor the next two weeks.”

22-year-old Patient Gives Birth to Twins in LUTH

A 22-year-old COVID-19 patient has successfully given birth to a set of twins at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, said yesterday that the delivery brought to four, the number of COVID-19 patients who had put to bed at the hospital.

He said: “A team of LUTH doctors, anesthetists and nurses, today delivered the fourth expectant mother (22 years old) diagnosed with COVID-19 of a set of twins. The baby girl weighed 3.2kg while the baby boy weighed 3.25kg. She delivered through a cesarean section. The mother and babies are doing well.”

Lagos Discharges Nine Additional COVID-19 Patients

The Lagos State Government has discharged nine additional COVID-19 patients from the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, bringing to 632 the total number of successfully treated persons in the state.

The Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said yesterday that the patients were two females and seven males.

He said: “The patients have fully recovered and have tested negative twice to the virus. This brings to 632, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases that have been successfully managed and discharged in Lagos.”

Lagos Commences Advocacy on Use of Face Masks

As the pandemic continues to ravage Lagos State, the state government is to begin advocacy and the sensitisation on the use of face masks, a statement from the Ministry of Information and Strategy said.

According to the statement, the advocacy will take place at different locations across the metropolis to sensitise residents on the importance of face masks’ usage as part of efforts to curb the community transmission of the COVID-19 in the state.

Speaking during the exercise, tagged: “Mask-Up-Lagos”, an Assistant Director and leader of the team, Mr. Bode Lawal, said the advocacy was geared towards encouraging all residents on the need to support the efforts of the state government to curb the spread of the global pandemic by using face masks.

UK Sanctions Oyakhilome’s TV over 5G/COVID-19 Claims

In a new development, the Office of Communications, the regulatory authority for broadcasting and telecommunications industries in the United Kingdom has sanctioned Loveworld Limited, operators of LoveWorld, a religious cable channel, for airing “unsubstantiated claims linking the pandemic to 5G technology.”

The television network owned by the Founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, was also penalised for feeding viewers with the claim that the pandemic is a ‘global cover-up’.

In a statement published on its website, Ofcom stated that the caution followed an investigation into the matter.

It said: “Our investigation found that a report on Loveworld News included unsubstantiated claims that 5G was the cause of the pandemic, and that this was the subject of a ‘global cover-up’.

“Another report during the programme suggested Hydroxychloroquine as a ‘cure’ for COVID-19, without acknowledging that its effectiveness and safety as a treatment was clinically unproven or making clear that it has potentially serious side effects.

“There is no ban on broadcasting controversial views which are different from, or which challenge, official authorities on public health information. However, given the unsubstantiated claims in both these programmes were not sufficiently put into context, they risked undermining viewers’ trust in official health advice, with potentially serious consequences for public health.

“Given these serious failings, we concluded that Loveworld Limited did not adequately protect viewers from the potentially harmful content in the news programme and the sermon and the news reports were not duly accurate. Loveworld Limited must broadcast our findings and we are considering whether to impose any further sanction,” it said.

FG Inaugurates Post-COVID-19 Committee for Creative Industry

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has performed the virtual inauguration of the Post-COVID-19 Committee for the Creative Industry, with a call on all members to support the committee.

The minister said the committee, which was announced two weeks ago, has now been expanded to include as many sectors as possible to ensure fair representation.

He described the creative industry as a critical sector of the nation’s economy and a major plank of the economic diversification policy of the administration.

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade has warned against further lockdown of the country in response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), saying it will spell doom and give rise to uncontrollable restiveness.

Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had on Wednesday agreed on interstate lockdown to curb the spread of the pandemic across states.

Ayade, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Christian Ita, pointed out, “With prices of oil falling, locking out is far better than locking down because another two weeks of lockdown will find this country under siege by young people. There is no way you can hold down these young energies for too long.

“It is demographic. According to statistics, 65 per cent of the population is below the age of 35 and the virus itself does not have penetrative force in such demography. That is what we have to recognise as a country.”

The governor argued that the difference in climate conditions between the west and Africa was the reason the pandemic was ravaging the former.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the COVID-19 Management Committee and Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, has appealed to residents to bear with government as the lockdown is extended to Monday April 27, 2020.

In a press conference for COVID-19 update in Uyo yesterday, he said the government was taking the action, despite its successes in containing the spread of the virus, to sustain the tempo and save the lives of the people of the state.

“In view of the critical situation that we are in as a nation and as a state, although it would have been desirable to call off the lockdown at this juncture, given that we must ensure continuous safety of our citizens, the ideal thing, for now, is to continue with the lockdown until Monday, April 27, 2020,” said Kwara recorded two new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 11.

The two new cases are contacts of the previous cases, AbdulRazaq told reporters in Ilorin shortly after flagging off the enumeration exercise for transporters at Government Secondary School, Maraba.

“The lockdown for another two weeks is to reduce the number of cases. As you can see, Kano is going up, Lagos is going up. Even in Kwara, we have two more cases. So, there is a need for boundaries to lockdown,” he said.

Also, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has extended the suspension of passports processing and migrant e-registration for one month.

The service said the extension was part of measures adopted by the Federal Government to restrict movement to contain the virus.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sunday James, in a statement yesterday quoted the Comptroller General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, as saying the action became necessary to give the situation the deserved attention and approach, considering the successes achieved and the need to drastically reduce the spread of COVID-19.

During her presentation at the White House COVID-19 briefing on Saturday, Dr. Deborah Birx was cruising along until she waded into one of President Donald Trump and the GOP’s sorest spots: the Chinese government’s apparent undercounting of coronavirus casualties. As Birx, the White House’s coronavirus coordinator, explained a slide showing COVID-19 deaths per capita for various countries, China’s was marked with an asterisk at the very bottom.

Trump, standing on the sidelines, couldn’t help but interject. “Excuse me, does anybody really believe this number?” he said, interrupting an apparently startled Birx—who then wheeled around, smiled, and coolly explained she put China’s number on the chart to demonstrate “how unrealistic this could be.”

Though Birx tried to move on, Trump still couldn’t keep quiet. He soon interrupted her again, to make a similar point, this time on the numbers shown for Iran.

“Does anyone really believe that number?” Trump asked again. “You see what’s going on over there.” He then asked to return to the previous slide and walked over to the screen, hovering and pointing incredulously to China and Iran’s numbers.

The moment was a fitting one for Saturday’s roughly 70-minute briefing, which was absent familiar figures like Vice President Mike Pence and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Trump did the lion’s share of the talking, veering between lambasting Democratic politicians and the media—in particular New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman—and embracing comfortable topics. He repeatedly mentioned a phone call with unnamed world leaders who, he said, had offered effusive praise for his handling of the outbreak.

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has condemned what he called “the frightening rate of extra-judicial killing of innocent Nigerians, particularly in the South East by policemen in the guise of enforcing the COVID-19 lockdown.”

Abaribe, in a press release in Abuja by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, also charged the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu to explain to Nigerians why his men have found the entire South East as most vulnerable in the circumstance to deploy such level of maximum force on citizens.

He alleged that not less than six Igbo youths had been sent to their early grave on account of their failure to obey the lockdown order.

“Why the concentration in the South East,” he queried. “In Aba, Abia State, precisely at Uratta Junction, one youth was allegedly gunned down, while another was heavily brutalised with gun butts to the point of coma on Friday. This came a day after another young man was killed at Umuikaa Junction for no just cause. It would be recalled that two weeks ago, an attendant in a petrol station in Ogbor Hill was also shot and killed, while on duty by a policeman, who claimed stray bullet.

“There are also reports of protests in Ohafia, Abia State, yesterday, over alleged killing of some youths in the community by the same police. We have not forgotten the alleged killing of another young man in Nkpor near Onitsha in Anambra State".

Abaribe said it was ironical that the South East, which has not recorded up to three deaths, due to the pandemic, has lost more of her people in such brutal, but avoidable circumstances in the hands of people that are statutorily empowered to protect them.

He died on Friday April 17, more than two weeks after he tested positive to Coronavirus.

A former presidential candidate in Nigeria, Obiageli Ezekwesili and leaders of the Nigerian community in Cape Town have met to proffer a solution to recurring xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

The meeting held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Cape Town, South Africa, comprising Nigerian entrepreneurs, professionals and the Nigerian community led by Cosmos Echie, the acting President of the Nigerian Community Western Cape (NCWC).

In a communique after the meeting, held in the form of an interactive session, the group preferred to describe the attacks as Afrophobia, the same term South Africa’s foreign affairs minister used to describe the latest waves of anti-foreigners attacks.

The Nigerian community opined that the anti-foreigner crisis is detrimental to the spirit of African renaissance, affirmation of black heritage, progress and development.

They said Afrophobia contradicts everything that the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCTA) represents and aspires to deliver.

The group urged governments of Nigeria and South Africa to guide against provocative comments and take preventive measures to avoid a repeat of Afrophobic attacks of Nigerians and other African nationals.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa was also asked to apologise to Nigerians and other countries whose citizens were attacked.

“The President of South Africa should offer a sincere public apology to Nigeria, other countries affected by the attacks and the entire continent for the tragic hostility and harm perpetrated against their citizens,” NCWC said.

The group advised Ramaphosa to visit the victims of the Afrophobia attacks to empathize with and reassure them of their safety in South Africa.

Although the Nigerian government demanded compensation for loss of its citizens from South Africa which was declined, the group, however, asked Ramaphosa to consider paying compensations for losses from the anti-foreigner attacks.

The South African government was also advised to trigger a series of actions necessary to de-escalate the brewing conflict.

This, they said, would ensure that bilateral trade agreements between the countries would not be affected.

“The President of South Africa should send a sharp signal to South Africans and the continent

“South Africa and Nigeria should agree on a mutual legal assistance cooperation scheme for tackling cases of crimes occurring among their citizens.”

NCWC asked the Nigerian High Commission and Nigerians in South Africa to design a fact-based campaign to widely convey the accurate and positive narrative of the value they contribute to their host country.

“The Nigerian government should make visible effort to guarantee the safety and security of South Africans and their businesses in Nigeria.”

They said Ezekwesili promised to offer her expertise in working with the NCWC to ensure that their goal to help achieve a formalising platform of a South Africa-based Nigerians in South Africa.

The National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Benin has affirmed the victory of a former Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Francis Alimikhena, for Edo North senatorial district.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice C. Ogundana, dismissed the petition filed by Mr Abubakar Momoh of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who is challenging the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 23 elections.

Momoh had alleged that Alimikhena was not qualified to contest the election for not having the requisite educational qualification and forged his ordinary level General Certificate of Education result.

Momoh further alleged that the senator did not score majority of lawful votes cast in the election.
Delivering judgement, the three-man panel held that the witnesses called to give evidence on the educational qualification only relied on paragraphs in the petition and did not render original results for the tribunal sighting.

The tribunal said there was no evidence to show Alimikhena impersonated and that the petitioner failed to prove non-qualification.

It said the petitioner introduced new allegations in his reply when he alleged that Alimikhena forged his primary school leaving certificate.

The tribunal ruled that reply should not be used as a repair kit to fix facts not pleaded in the petition.
On the issue of not scoring majority of lawful votes, the tribunal said the 18 witnesses called by the petitioner did not provide evidence of cancelled results and over voting and that ‘the witness is not a witness of truth.’

“There was no evidence to show over voting. The evidences from witnesses were hearsay. The witnesses were not eyewitnesses.

“The forensic expert called by the petitioners does not qualify as an expert. His evidence was mere arithmetic calculation and academic exercise. His value is worthless.

“The petitioners have not demonstrated that if all the results are properly collated, they would have scored majority of lawful votes.”

“There was no credible evidence to prove vote buying, non-compliance with electoral act and corrupt practices.”

A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Adejoro Adeogun (APC-Ondo), has said that Nigeria’s political class is not ready for state police.

Adeogun in an interview with journalists in Abuja, recommended decentralisation of the current police force and effective community policing to address insecurity in the country instead of the call for the establishment of state police.

Adeogun, who represents Akoko South East/Akoko South West Federal Constituency of Ondo, said that governors would use state police as a tool to intimidate opposition if established.

“I am aware that there were few occasions when attempts were made to amend the constitution to allow for state police and it was opposed by some parts of the country.

“There is a lot of suspicion because the political class does not handle power very well; give a governor powers to appoint the Commissioner of Police, he will use the same police to overwhelm the opponent.

“Lets look at what is happening with state electoral commissions, the opposition party hardly win elections in the state, the same thing will happen when we have state police, the opposition will not get security protection.

“We are not prepared for state police, what we can do is to decentralise the current police until such a time that our nation is matured enough for that,” he said.

The lawmaker stressed the need to amend required areas of the law so that it can be more effective to provide funds and training for the security agencies to do their job effectively without which we shall continue to face challenges.(NAN)

The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, has expressed confidence that the party will win the 2021 governorship election in the state.

Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church has predicted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not win the coming election in Kogi State following the failure of Senator Dino Melaye to clinch the party’s gubernatorial ticket at primary election held last week. Ayodele, had cautioned that the Senator representing Kogi West might lose the ticket to Musa Wada or Ibrahim Abubakar during an interdenominational service held penultimate Tuesday due to what he described as negligence on the part of the senator.

Reno Omokri, a former Aide to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari is not concerned about Nigerians killed in South Africa.
Omokri claimed that Buhari is not concerned, because the victims are Igbos.
He said this in response to the xenophobic attack on Nigerians, and the response by the Nigerian Government to the development.
In a series of tweets, Omokri alleged that Buhari has not acted over the incident, because the South-East gave him five percent votes during the 2019 Presidential election.
He tweeted: “General @MBuhari is NOT bothered about the KILLINGS of Nigerians in South Africa, because he feels that most Nigerians there are Igbos. They are 5 percenters. If he wanted to, he could act fast. Remember how fast he acted with Zainab Aliyu in Saudi Arabia?

The first official same-sex blessing of a civilly-married couple will occur within two weeks in an Australian Anglican church, Anglican.ink reports.

This follows the passing of a new regulation to allow holding a same-sex blessings by the Wangaratta Synod (regional council) of the Anglican Church of Australia on the weekend. The vote was 67 for, 18 against, with one abstention.

The first same-sex service is likely to occur in two weeks’ time in the Melbourne Anglican.

“The retired Diocesan Archdeacon, the Revd Dr John Davis, and his partner of 20 years, the Rev’d Robert Whalley, are planning a [non-church] marriage, to be blessed in a service in the small church at Milawa on 14 September.” Both men are in their seventies.

Describing the future blessing in ‘a packed country church,’ Davis says his Bishop will be there.

“I clearly declare my own position. Fr Rob Whalley my partner of twenty years and I will shortly marry under the law of the land,” Davis has Facebooked.

“Following on after that, we hope to be asking the God we honour and those who care for us, to continue to bless us in our ongoing life together. In that ‘packed country church’”.

Wangaratta’s Bishop John Parkes, a strong supporter of the move is set to retire later this year, possibly after marrying Davis and Whalley.

The new regulation “provides for ‘persons married according to the Marriage Act 1961’, the Commonwealth Marriage Act amended in 2017 to allow same-sex marriages,” according to Porter. “The Wangaratta regulation includes a prescribed liturgy for the blessing service.” The Anglican Church does not permit same sex weddings which is why a blessing ceremony is planned.
