TimmyTen:
Yes! Tell that next person beside you about CHOLERA,its no news its killing lots of children/peolpe in Nigeria and other developing/under developed countries..

Cholera is a disease caused by bacteria that produce a watery diarrhea that can rapidly lead to dehydration

Syptoms:
Cholera infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe. Approximately one in 20 (5%) infected persons will have severe disease characterized by profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and legcramps. In these people, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours.
Cholera symptoms and signs include a rapid onset of copious, smelly diarrhea that resembles rice water and may lead to signs ofdehydration (for example, vomiting, wrinkled skin, low blood pressure, dry mouth, rapid heart rate).

How long does it takes for the syptoms to appear:
It can take anywhere from a few hours to 5 days for symptoms to appear after infection. Symptoms typically appear in 2-3 days.

How is cholera transmitted:
Cholera is most frequently transmitted by water sources contaminated with the causative bacteriumVibrio cholerae, although contaminated foods, especially raw shellfish, may also transmit the cholera-causing bacteria.
Human-human transmission is uncommon.

Who is at more risk of cholera:
Some individuals are at higher risk to become infected than others. People who are malnourished or immune-compromised are more likely to get the disease. Children ages 2-4 seem more susceptible than older children, according to some investigators. In addition, researchers have noted that patients with blood type O are twice more likely to develop cholera than others. The reason for this blood type susceptibility is not completely understood. Peoplewith achlorhydria (reduced acid secretion in the stomach) and people taking medicines to reduce stomach acid (H2 blockers and others) are also more likely to develop cholera because stomach acid kills many types of bacteria, includingV. cholerae.

Prevention:
Drink and brush teeth only with water that has been boiled or treated with chlorine or iodine tablets. Safedrinks include coffee and tea made with boiling water or carbonated bottled water and carbonated soft drinks.Cook it. Eat only thoroughly cooked foods, and eat them while they are still hot. Avoid eating food from street vendors. Eat only fruit or nuts with a thick intact skin or shell that is removed immediately before eating. Do not eat raw foods such as oysters or ceviche. Avoid salads and raw vegetables. Do not use untreated ice cubes in otherwise safe drinks.Stay out of it. Do not swim or fish in polluted water. An an emphasis, important preventive measures at the community level include provision of adequate portablewater, provision for the safe disposal of human feces and good food hygiene.

Treatment:
The main treatment for cholera is fluid and electrolyte replacement, both oral and IV. Antibiotics usually are used in severe infections in which dehydration has occurred. The prognosis of cholera ranges from excellent to poor. Rapid treatment with fluid andelectrolytesresult in better outcomes while people with other health problems beside cholera or those who are not rapidly replenished with fluid treatments tend to have a poorer prognosis.Cholera can be prevented with appropriate measures such as safedrinking water and noncontaminated foods; some protection can be obtained from oral vaccines while avoiding areas where cholera commonly occurs or has had a recent outbreak.

Cholera, is a recurent epidemic in Nigeria! ;
24,519 cholera cases and 484 deaths have been reported in 17 countries in West and Central Africa in 2013 -- 64 per cent less than last year..
-.There has been a 100 per cent increase in the number of reported cholera cases in Nigeria in October as compared to September.*.The current hotspots are: (1) Nigeria, (2) Guinea Bissau, (3) DRC, (4) Guinea and Sierra Leone (5) Togo and Benin – ranked in order of importance.

Help put a stop by telling the next person how dangerous those dirts in the homes, surroundings can be.
Dont allow that person squat there by the road side to deaficate(if he refuses, dont hesitate to give him a knock on the head)
Tell mothers/fathers/guidances/teachers to make sure they and their kids rinse their hands after visiting the toilet...and before/after eating.

Thank you!
