Nairaland / General / Full Text Of President Buhari’s Democracy Day Speech (READ) by Skuhc: 10:21am On May 29, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari has delivered his Democracy Day address to Nigerians today in commemoration of his first year in office.

He was sworn in May 29, 2015 after winning the April general elections deposing Goodluck Jonathan as President of the nation.

Read the full text of his address below

My compatriots, It is one year today since our administration came into office. It has been a year of triumph, consolidation, pains and achievements. By age, instinct and experience, my preference is to look forward, to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead and rededicate the administration to the task of fixing Nigeria.
But i believe we can also learn from the obstacles we have overcome and the progress we made thus far, to help strengthen the plans that we have in place to put Nigeria back on the path of progress.
We affirm our belief in democracy as the form of government that best assures the active participation and actual benefit of the people. Despite the many years of hardship and disappointment the people of this nation have proved inherently good, industrious tolerant, patient and generous.
The past years have witnessed huge flows of oil revenues. From 2010 average oil prices were $100 per barrel. But economic and security conditions were deteriorating. We campaigned and won the election on the platform of restoring security, tackling corruption and restructuring the economy. On our arrival, the oil price had collapsed to as low as $30 per barrel and we found nothing had been kept for the rainy day. Oil prices have been declining since 2014 but due to the neglect of the past, the country was not equipped to halt the economy from declining.
The infrastructure, notably rail, power, roads were in a decrepit state. All the four refineries were in a state of disrepair, the pipelines and depots neglected.
Huge debts owed to contractors and suppliers had accumulated. Twenty-seven states could not pay salaries for months. In the north-east, Boko Haram had captured 14 local governments, driven the local authorities out, hoisted their flags. Elsewhere, insecurity was palpable; corruption and impunity were the order of the day. In short, we inherited a state near collapse.
On the economic front, all oil dependent countries, Nigeria included, have been struggling since the drop in prices. Many oil rich states have had to take tough decisions similar to what we are doing. The world, Nigeria included has been dealing with the effects of three significant and simultaneous global shocks starting in 2014:
a 70% drop in oil prices.
Global growth slowdown.
Normalization of monetary policy by the united states federal reserve.
Our problems as a government are like that of a farmer who in a good season harvests ten bags of produce. The proceeds enable him to get by for rest of the year. However, this year he could only manage 3 bags from his farm. He must now think of other ways to make ends meet.
From day one, we purposely set out to correct our condition, to change Nigeria. We reinforced and galvanized our armed forces with new leadership and resources. We marshaled our neighbors in a joint task force to tackle and defeat Boko Haram. By the end of December 2015, all but pockets and remnants had been routed by our gallant armed forces. Our immediate focus is for a gradual and safe return of internally displaced persons in safety and dignity and for the resumption of normalcy in the lives of people living in these areas.
EFCC was given the freedom to pursue corrupt officials and the judiciary was alerted on what Nigerians expect of them in the fight against corruption. On the economy, in particular foreign exchange and fuel shortages, our plan is to save foreign exchange by fast tracking repair of the refineries and producing most of our fuel requirements at home. And by growing more food in Nigeria, mainly rice, wheat and sugar we will save billions of dollars in foreign exchange and drastically reduce our food import bill.
We resolved to keep the Naira steady, as in the past, devaluation had done dreadful harm to the Nigerian economy. Furthermore, i support the monetary authority’s decision to ensure alignment between monetary policy and fiscal policy. We shall keep a close look on how the recent measures affect the Naira and the economy. But we cannot get away from the fact that a strong currency is predicated on a strong economy. And a strong economy pre-supposes an industrial productive base and a steady export market. The measures we must take, may lead to hardships. The problems Nigerians have faced over the last year have been many and varied. But the real challenge for this government has been reconstructing the spine of the Nigerian state. The last twelve months have been spent collaborating with all arms of government to revive our institutions so that they are more efficient and fit for purpose:

that means a bureaucracy better able to develop and deliver policy
that means an independent judiciary, above suspicion and able to defend citizen’s rights and dispense justice equitably.
That means a legislature that actually legislates effectively and
above all; that means political parties and politicians committed to serving the Nigerian people rather than themselves.
These are the pillars of the state on which democracy can take root and thrive. But only if they are strong and incorruptible. Accordingly, we are working very hard to introduce some vital structural reforms in the way we conduct government business and lay a solid foundation on which we can build enduring change.
An important first step has been to get our housekeeping right. So we have reduced the extravagant spending of the past. We started boldly with the treasury single account, stopping the leakages in public expenditure.
We then identified forty-three thousand ghost workers through the integrated payroll and personal information system. That represents pay packets totaling N4.2 billion stolen every month. In addition, we will save twenty-three billion per annum from official travelling and sitting allowances alone.
Furthermore, the efficiency unit will cut costs and eliminate duplication in ministries and departments. Every little saving helps. The reduction in the number of ministries and work on restructuring and rationalization of the MDAs is well underway. When this work is complete we will have a leaner, more efficient public service that is fit for the purpose of changing Nigeria for the good and for good.
As well as making savings, we have changed the way public money is spent. In all my years as a public servant, i have never come across the practice of padding budgets. I am glad to tell you now we not only have a budget, but more importantly, we have a budget process that is more transparent, more inclusive and more closely tied to our development priorities than in the recent past. 30% of the expenditure in this budget is devoted to capital items. Furthermore, we are projecting non-oil revenues to surpass proceeds from oil. Some critics have described the budget exercise as clumsy.

Perhaps. But it was an example of consensus building, which is integral to democratic government. In the end we resolved our differences.
We have, therefore, delivered significant milestones on security, corruption and the economy. In respect of the economy, i would like to directly address you on the very painful but inevitable decisions we had to make in the last few weeks specifically on the pump price of fuel and the more flexible exchange rate policy announced by the central bank. It is even more painful for me that a major producer of crude oil with four refineries that once exported refined products is today having to import all of its domestic needs. This is what corruption and mismanagement has done to us and that is why we must fight these ills.
As part of the foundation of the new economy we have had to reform how fuel prices had traditionally been fixed. This step was taken only after protracted consideration of its pros and cons. After comprehensive investigation my advisers and i concluded that the mechanism was unsustainable.

Nairaland / General / ‘tiwa Savage Will Never Have Peace’ | Tee Billz Suffers Meltdown? (READ) by Skuhc: 10:28am On Apr 28, 2016
On Thursday morning, Tunji Balogun a.k.a Tee Billz, posted several disturbing posts on Instagram, which suggests that he’s either contemplating suicide or his marriage to singer, Tiwa Savage, is over for good.

In the past couple of years, Tee Billz, who manages Tiwa Savage, has been accused of domestic violence – but both parties have never spoken on the matter.

At some point, it was rumoured that Tee Billz was intimidated by the fame and success of the singer, hence his resorting to inflicting physical pains on her.

Again, this claim has never been confirmed.

Of recent, the owner of management outfit – 323 Entertainment – has had series of meltdowns on Instagram, where he attacked and lashed out at fans for various reasons.

His last 8 Instagram posts, if his account wasn’t hacked, connotes a cry for help from a deeply troubled soul.

Politics / ‘buhari Using Millions In Foreign Aid To Go After Political Opponents’ by Skuhc: 1:50pm On Apr 13, 2016
Millions given to Nigeria by the British government as foreign aid to prosecute the war against Boko Haram is said to have been diverted by the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to fight political opponents of the government.

This is according to a Tuesday publication by the UK Telegraph defense editor, Con Coughlin.

Britain and the USA are said to have given to Nigeria, hundreds of millions in aid, but those monies are yet to be accounted for by the Buhari administration.

Coughlin writes that: “Hundreds of millions of pounds of British foreign aid given to Nigeria to help combat Boko Haram terrorists is instead being used to fund a witch-hunt against opposition politicians, it is being claimed.”

“Britain has committed to spending £860 million in foreign aid to Nigeria, which now boasts Africa’s largest economy, to help support the country’s efforts to crush Boko Haram terror group, which has been responsible for a spate of outrages, including the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls.”

“But Western officials are now raising concerns that the government of the country’s recently elected leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, is misusing the funds to persecute political opponents.”

“Since Mr Buhari came to power last July, a number of prominent members of the former ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have been arrested and imprisoned without charge. Among those detained was the party’s official spokesperson.”

“Most of the arrests have been sanctioned by the government-controlled Economic and Financial Crime Commission, which was set up to tackle corruption and receives funding from the Department for International Development.”

“But while Mr Buhari’s government continues to use British aid money to target his political opponents, it is proving less effective at tackling the Islamist-run Boko Haram terrorist group.”

“Much of the aid Britain provides to Nigeria is aimed at helping the country’s security forces to become more effective at tackling Boko Haram, which boasts of its links with Islamic State (Isil) and achieved international notoriety two years ago after kidnapping 276 schoolgirls in northern Nigeria two years ago.”

“Scores of British military personnel – including members of the Special Forces – are based in Nigeria helping to train the military to tackle Boko Haram. But despite Mr Buhari’s pledge during last year’s general election campaign that he would make tackling Boko Haram one of his top priorities, there is growing concern among Western officials that the Nigerian military is failing to take effective action against the terrorists.”
The paper further stated that the British government is increasingly worried over President Buhari’s style of governance and his inability to stop Boko Haram terror attacks.

“Western officials have expressed concern about Mr Buhari’s increasingly autocratic style of government since he came to power last year. A retired major-general, continue reading

Following the relaxed and almost lackadaisical attitude of the Goodluck Jonathan administration towards rescuing the girls from the claws of their captors, different individuals from across the nation rose with the clarion call to Bring Back Our Girls.

Nairaland / General / Natural Remedies: How To Solve Fishy Vaginas by Skuhc: 2:47pm On Apr 04, 2016
Vaginas are very intricate organs.

One minute, they are independent, self cleansers from the inside out and the very next, rely on their hosts to practice sound hygiene for them to function optimally — free of any unpleasant odors.

Because: it is totally normal for your nether region to have some sort of smell.

Sexual activity, a period’s cycle and the types of underwear a woman fancies all contribute to the smells her delicate lady parts emit. A musky smell could simply mean you’ve been sweating a lot down there and need to amp up hygiene or worse, you might need to see your gynecologist to check for any missing/long forgotten tampons, while a metallic like smell signals the end of your period and shouldn’t last too long.

Vaginas that smell of freshly baked bread or a good malt beer just have an overgrowth of yeast and a slight whiff of bleach is common after intercourse — due to the fact that sperm has its own pH. Tight clothing and non-cotton underpants can restrict your vajayjay from breathing and stales things up really quickly.

On the flip side however, a fishy smell from your deep blue sea could be one of two things;

Politics / Panama Papers: James Ibori Named In Massive Tax Evasion, Corruption Scandal by Skuhc: 9:42am On Apr 04, 2016
Former Delta state governor, James Ibori, has been implicated in a massive leak of documents that has so far exposed the corrupt dealings of 12 current and former world leaders, politicians and celebrities.

Ibori, who is currently serving a 12 year sentence in the United Kingdom for international money laundering, is said to have bought a shell company from a Panamanian provider of offshore companies, Mossack Fonseca, to evade taxes and launder money allegedly stolen from the coffers of Delta State.

Mossack Fonseca, which has dozens of offices all over the world, sells its shell firms in cities such as Zurich, London, and Hong Kong – in some instances at bargain prices.

The firm is said to have created a shell company named Stanhope Investment, for Ibori and also appointed Directors to the said company, while concealing the identity of Ibori and other shareholders of the dubious company, thus protecting them from detection and possible prosecution for violation of international and domestic laws.

The shell company allegedly created for Ibori has the International Business Commission (IBC) No: 018603.

The revelation was made by the the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and more than 100 other news organizations around the world.

According to ICIJ, “Clients of Mossack Fonseca can buy an anonymous company for as little as USD 1,000. However, at this price it is just an empty shell. For an extra fee, the firm provides a sham director and, if desired, conceals the company’s true shareholder.”

Nairaland / General / ‘this War Between Us Will Not Stop’ – Boko Haram Leader Says In New Video by Skuhc: 6:01pm On Apr 01, 2016
These words: “This war between us will not stop”, were uttered by Abubakar Shekau, leader of extremist group, Boko Haram, as he affirmed, in a video released on Thursday, that the terror group will not surrender .

This is coming on the heels of last week’s video, wherein a thin looking and dejected Shekau had insinuated that the terror group is surrendering and that his time as leader of the sect had come to an end.

However, in a shocking comeback video, Shekau stated that Boko Haram was still strong.

In the video, a masked man wearing military camouflage, surrounded by insurgents with weapons in front of Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks and a lorry mounted with a military cannon, stated that: “You should know that there is no truce, there is no negotiations, there is no surrender.”

Yes, it can.

Maybe not immediately but eventually.

Not to fret, it will take more than twenty years of a really serious coke addiction to really notice any significant changes in a man’s third leg. This is because caffeine, a diuretic- that is a drug that increases the water and sodium content – in the urine is the constituent in coke responsible for said shrinkage.

But a continued over consumption of coke can have significant adverse effects on a guy’s sexual health. And caffeine, again is the ready culprit.

Politics / Femi Adesina To Nigerians: ‘go And Fight Pipeline Vandals If You Want Electricit by Skuhc: 1:33pm On Mar 28, 2016
Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina has asked Nigerians to take up arms and fight pipeline vandals if they really want stable electricity.

It would be recalled that during an interview with Al Jazeera, President Muhammadu Buhari said that anyone who was not okay with Nigeria’s addition to the Coalition of Islamic States against Terror should head to the Sambisa forest and fight the terrorists themselves.

In like manner, NNPC boss, Kachikwu Ibe had told Nigerians he is not a magician and therefore could not magically solve the fuel crisis in the country.

It would appear that the kind of comment made by the NNPC boss, Ibe Kachikwu which irked a lot of Nigerians last week is set to be a trend with the government of the day.

Adesina followed this trend of apathy in a recent interview with Channels TV where he spoke on several issues affecting the country.

The presidential spokesperson blamed gas pipeline vandals for the drastic drop in power generation in the country while claiming that the target of 10,000 megawatts set by the Federal Government is achievable.

He however, told Nigerians who are complaining about the incessant black outs and almost non-existent power supply in the country to go and fight the vandals if they really needed power.

If Nigerians are supposed to go and fight terrorists in the forest, magically create fuel on their own and now have to fight pipeline vandals, what then is the government’s duty to Nigerians?

Romance / The Body Shop: 4 Things You Should Never Do To Your Vagina by Skuhc: 11:41am On Mar 28, 2016
If your vagina were a song, she’d be Destiny’s Child “Independent Women, Part 1″—she can take care of herself. Despite that universal truth, though, some ladies still insist on messing around or tidying up down there in the most, ah, creative of ways. Here are four common moves that can go very, very wrong.

1. Stay far away from steaming.
We’re all for the Goop-y philosophy of living your very best, healthiest life. But when Gwyneth Paltrow starts doling out patently bad advice, we’ve got to draw the line. Your vagina isn’t a carpet—you should not steam clean it. According to our partners at Women’s Health (and because Goop took down the post due to justifiable backlash), Paltrow defined steaming for V as when you “sit on what is essentially a mini-throne, and a combination of infrared and mugwort steam cleanses your uterus, et al. It is an energetic release—not just a steam douche—that balances female hormone levels.”
Raquel Dardik, MD, clinical associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center’s department of obstetrics and gynecology, has a slightly different opinion. “Steaming would be a definite no because you would burn your vagina,” she says.2. Self-medicating is always a bad call.
Those over-the-counter vaginal creams or suppositories for yeast infections have their place; this is about the more homespun approach people sometimes try. “You should never try to self-medicate with homemade remedies like garlic or tea tree oil,” says Dardik. At the very least, they won’t make a dent in your misery. At the very worst? Well, it’s not pretty. “I’ve seen chemical burns from some of these Internet suggestions, and a chemical burn inside of your vagina is not something I’d wish on anyone,” says Dardik.

3. Inserting UFOs (unsanitary foreign objects) seems like a good idea…until it doesn’t.
You already know what’s allowed to go into your vagina: tampons, fingers, intimacy gadgets, a penis, lube, birth control, menstrual cups—and that’s... http://theseptemberstandard.com/the-body-shop-4-things-you-should-never-do-to-your-vagina/

Nairaland / General / Opinion: Dear Buhari, Last Time I Checked, You’re Still The Minster Of Petroleum by Skuhc: 8:51am On Mar 28, 2016
Your Excellency Sir, I write you this piece not as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but as the minister of petroleum resources appointed by yourself on the 11th of November, 2015.

You seem to have forgotten that you are the minister of petroleum resources and may have completely relinquished your responsibilities to the minister of state of petroleum resources- Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who to me, to a reasonable extent has been up and doing.

You seem to have neglected the fact that you are directly answerable to Nigerians as the Minister of petroleum resources, and owe it to Nigerians to make the product readily available and affordable.

As a reminder of what you already know- the fuel scarcity has fully gripped major cities in the country and contributing negatively to an economy that is still struggling to pick its stand.

Pathetic as it may, your ministry has failed Nigerians over its inability to end the lingering fuel scarcity, as this unabated scarcity of the product has contributed to the high cost of goods and service.

The Honourable Minister of petroleum Sir, you are on your way in setting the record of the longest reign of fuel scarcity in the history of the republic under your watch.
