Correcting details on your National Identification Number (NIN) can be done entirely online via the NIMC Self-Service Portal or by visiting a physical NIMC Enrolment Centre. Here is exactly how the process works, the required documents, and the fees involved. Step 1: Gather Your Supporting Documents Before starting, ensure you have clear, scanned copies (or clear photos if using the online portal) of the required legal documents depending on the correction you want to make: For Date of Birth (DOB) Correction: A digitized National Population Commission (NPC) Birth Certificate (if born after 1992) or an NPC Attestation Certificate (if born before 1992). For Name Correction/Change: A court affidavit, a newspaper change of name extract, and a marriage certificate (for married women changing their surnames). For Address Correction: A recent utility bill, tenancy agreement, or a community leader's attestation letter. For Phone Number/Email: A valid phone number linked to your NIN. Step 2: Choose Your Correction Method You can choose between the online self-service route or visiting a physical NIMC center. Method A: Online via the Self-Service Portal This is the fastest method for most modifications, allowing you to avoid long physical queues. 1 Log In to the Portal Requires internet access Go to the official official portal: selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng. Enter your 11-digit NIN and complete the face verification scan or OTP validation to access your dashboard. 2 Select the Field to Modify Choose carefully From your dashboard, choose the exact detail you want to correct (e.g., Name, Date of Birth, Address, or Phone Number). 3 Upload Your Documents PDF or JPEG format Input the required certificate data (like your NPC certificate number for DOB) and upload clear, legible copies of your supporting documents (e.g., court affidavit or birth certificate). 4 Make the Payment Via Remita / Paystack Review the modifications to ensure everything is spelled correctly. Proceed to the payment gateway to pay the required fee using your ATM/debit card. 5 Submit and Track Processing takes 2–10 working days Submit the request. You will receive a transaction slip or reference number. Once approved by NIMC, you will get an email notification, and you can download your updated NIN slip directly from the portal. Method B: At a Physical NIMC Enrolment Centre If you are updating your photograph, correcting your gender, or prefer human assistance, you must go in person. Visit the nearest NIMC State Office or licensed Enrolment Centre. Request and fill out the NIN Modification Form, writing the corrected information clearly. Provide your original supporting documents to the NIMC officer for verification. Pay the required fee via Remita and provide the printout of your Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) receipt. Do a biometric data recapture (fingerprints and photo) if required. Collect your Transaction ID Slip. You will be asked to return in 5–10 working days to collect your newly printed NIN slip.
