There is something deeply painful about a country sitting on some of the greatest petroleum wealth on Earth while millions of its citizens struggle to afford ordinary life.

That is why the figures being circulated about Venezuela’s reported new oil arrangements deserve serious scrutiny.

The claims are staggering: approximately 65 billion barrels of oil, production potentially reaching 1.5 million barrels per day, and an arrangement reportedly stretching for 25 years, with possibilities for much longer involvement.

One figure being circulated says Venezuela could receive around $209 billion in state revenue over the life of the projects.

At first glance, $209 billion sounds enormous.

Until you compare it with the potential gross value of the oil.

At an illustrative average oil price of $83 per barrel:

65 billion barrels × $83 = approximately $5.4 trillion in gross oil value.

So out of $5.4 Trillion America will make from Venezuelan oil, they are only giving $209 billion, not even 1 trillion but just $209 billion to the owners of the oil.

Venezuelans have every right to ask Trump:

What percentage of the economic value created from our natural resources ultimately benefits Venezuela?

Oil is not renewable.

Once a barrel leaves Venezuelan soil, it is gone forever.

Imagine watching millions of barrels leave your country while your hospital lacks equipment.

Imagine living above extraordinary petroleum reserves while your electricity remains unreliable.

Imagine your country generating billions from underneath your feet while your salary cannot adequately feed your family.

Imagine explaining to your grandchildren that their country once possessed one of humanity’s greatest concentrations of petroleum wealth, but much of it was extracted before they were old enough to have a voice in how that wealth was managed.

This is what some people wished to happen to Nigeria. They wanted Trump to invade Nigeria and do to our national wealth what they are doing to Venezuelans. God forbid.

Its okay to hat£ Tinubu but don't ever hate yourself. Don't ever hate Nigeria. That's who you are whether you like it or not. During every anti-immigrant crisis, igbos, yorubas, edos, hausas etc were not told to go beck to Biafra, oduduwa etc. They were told to go back to Nigeria. It wasn't the Biafran government that rescued them but the Nigerian government. You only have ONLY one country today and that's Nigeria.
