Educational Services / Re: How To Solve Time And Work Alternate Days Working Problems? by Smartkeeda: 3:22pm On Sep 08, 2016
Dear Aakash!

To solve a time and work question in which efficiency of two or more persons is given and we are asked how many days will they take to complete the given work working alternately.

Let's take an example here.
Ex. A and B take 6 days and 4 days alone to do a piece of work. How many days will they take if working alternately?

Explanation:

Step 1. Calculate the combined efficiency of A and B of 2 days = 1/4 + 1/6 = 5/12
Step 2. Think of a multiple of the numerator part of the above fractional value that should be close to the denominator but it shouldn't exceed the denominator. In the given case, it would be 5 x 2 = 10.

Step 3. Multiply this multiple into both the sides LHS and RHS. We thus get,
Combined efficiency of A and B of 4 days = 10/12 or 5/6

Step 4. Calculate the rest of the work by subtracting the combined efficiency from 1. We get, 1 - 5/6 = 1/6

Step 5. Now, as it's A who starts the work, therefore, after working for 4 days it's once again A's turn whose 1 day's efficiency is given as 1/6.
Which means he will take one day to complete the remaining work.

Step 6. Total number of days required = 4 + 1 = 5 days.

We hope it helps. You can drop a query here if anything you want to discuss. You can also go to the link to get more such explanations on the page.

But while preparing whenever I happen to solve a Syllogism question in Reasoning section I go nervous because I found that finding the correct answer with the help of Venn Diagram method is quite time consuming so I believe Venn Diagram method to solve Syllogism is not that fast or effective.

Education / How To Multiply A Number By 25 Fast? Simplification Shortcuts With Examples by Smartkeeda: 2:38pm On Aug 06, 2016
How to multiply a number by 25 fast:

We know that we can write 25 as 100/4.

So the trick is to divide the number by 4 and place

1. '00' at ten's place and unit's place if the number is completely divisible by 4.
2. '25' at ten's place and unit's place if we get 1 as remainder.
3. '50' at ten's place and unit's place if we get 2 as remainder.
4. '75' at ten's place and unit's place if we get 3 as remainder.

Example 1:
Multiply 124 into 25

Step 1: Divide 124 by 4 = 31
Step 2: Place '00' in the end, we get 3100

Example 2:
Multiply 633 into 25

Step 1: Divide 633 by 4 = 158 with 1 as remainder.
Step 2: Place '25' in the end, we get 15825

We hope it helps. You can get more such simplification tricks on http://www.smartkeeda.com/Quantitative_Aptitude/Arithmetic/Simplification/newest/all/

Education / Compound Interest Shortcut Trick That Will Amaze You!!! by Smartkeeda: 2:01pm On Aug 04, 2016
Question: A sum of Rs. 10000 is invested at a compound interest rate of 10% for 2 years. What will be the amount after the mentioned period?

Solution:

Apply the net% effect formula which says:

Net % effect = x + y + (xy)/100

Here, x and y are the interest that goes same for both the years and (xy)/100 is the part that will give us the additional interest we are gaining through compounding.

Therefore, net % rate of interest = 10 + 10 + 100/100 = 21%

Hence the amount which will be 121% of the sum = Rs. 12100
