Business / Jeff Bezos Again Overtakes Elon Musk As World Richest Man by Smatkomo: 1:15pm On Aug 17, 2021
At the end of Monday’s trading session, Jeff Bezos once again became the world’s richest man after Elon Musk suffered a record loss on his wealth valuation.

Musk’s wealth valuation plummeted by $7.56 billion, bringing his wealth value to just $187 billion. Meanwhile, Bezos, the founder and chair of Amazon, the world’s biggest e-commerce company, is worth $192 billion with daily gains of $282 million.

Tesla shares fell over 4% on Monday as auto safety officials announced they opened a formal probe into Tesla’s (TSLA) Autopilot system following a series of accidents involving emergency vehicles.

Amazon, the world’s leading online retail giant, reported decent gains on Monday as customers increasingly opt to buy online due to fears of spreading COVID-19 disease.

Art, Graphics & Video / Youtube Starts Paying Shorts Creators $10,000 Every Month by Smatkomo: 2:31pm On Aug 06, 2021
In the last few years, many of the biggest social media companies have been throwing money at creators, trying to get them to embrace their platforms and bring loyal audiences to their apps. Earlier this year, YouTube announced a $100 million fund specifically to pay creators who use the platform's new Shorts format, which just came out of beta and rolled out to 100 countries last month. That fund is now live as of today, so the company is dropping more details on how you can get paid.

As YouTube announced earlier this year, the company plans to invite "thousands of eligible creators" to claim a payment from the program from now through 2022; YouTube is offering from $100 to $10,000, depending on how many people watch the Short as well as some other engagement metrics. Anyone posting shorts is theoretically eligible to get picked for a payment, not just creators who participate in the YouTube Partner Program (that's the program YouTube launched 14 years ago so that users could get paid for their content).

Naturally, there are a number of standards that these Shorts need to meet to be eligible. Most of them are pretty straightforward, like abiding by YouTube's community guidelines and copyright policies. YouTube also doesn't want people just re-uploading content they created for Snapchat or TikTok, so any Shorts with watermarks or logos from other social networks won't qualify. YouTube says it'll be awarding payments on a monthly basis so interested creators will be incentivized to keep making new Shorts.

While YouTube Shorts is a relatively new platform, TikTok has had a similar fund for its creators since 2020. It was announced as a $200 million fund, double what YouTube currently has budgeted for its Shorts fund, and those interested would have to submit their best work. But while TikTok's fund may be larger than this Shorts program, YouTube notes that it has nine other ways for its creators to monetize their content.

It was announced as a $200 million fund, double what YouTube currently has budgeted for its Shorts fund, and those interested would have to submit their best work. But while TikTok's fund may be larger than this Shorts program, YouTube notes that it has nine other ways for its creators to monetize their content.

Not to be outdone, Facebook recently launched its own $1 billion program to lure creators to Instagram as well as its main service. Perhaps more significantly than the sheer dollar value is the fact that Facebook isn't going to collect a cut of creators' revenue through 2022, making a focus on the platform even more potentially lucrative. The size of this move is an admission from Facebook that it's a little behind the curve here; Instagram didn't offer any kind of revenue share until last year, in fact.

Between TikTok's massive influence and Facebook's massive war chest aimed at creators, YouTube is going to need to keep offering its users more ways to make cash — and the company knows it. Indeed, it said in today's news that the $100 million fund is the "first step" in its plans to monetize Shorts.

TV/Movies / Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife, Universal Pictures Secured Rights For Movie On Hushpuppi by Smatkomo: 11:51am On Aug 06, 2021
Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife TV, Universal Pictures, and Will Packer Productions have received the adaptation rights for a movie on Ramon Abass, also known as Ray Hushpuppi.

The production houses have decided to do a movie on the International fraudster, based on a Bloomberg story, “The Fall of the Billionaire Gucci Master.”

According to The Hollywood Reporters, an untitled action thriller movie project has been set up at Universal Pictures, following the collection of the adaptation rights for the movie.

The movie will be based on a Bloomberg story by Evan Ratiff which detailed how Hushpuppi carried out an internet scam and how he was caught by International police.

When the project is ready, Mo Abudu will produce for EbonyLife Studios while Will Packer Productions and Abudu will produce for EbonyLife Studios.

Will Packer Productions is known for producing popular movies like Girls Trip and Night School.

“Ten months ago Mo pitched us a rich and entertaining concept steeped in Nigerian culture that can only be told with the help of her unique perspective. Together we knew Evan’s work was the definitive telling and the perfect anchor of this saga,” Will Packer said in a statement.
“We understand the environment of poverty and deprivation that breeds highly talented and fundamentally flawed characters like Hushpuppi, and WPP knows how to create stories with global appeal,” Abudu added in her own statement.

Phones / Federal Government Of Extends NIN-SIM Verification Till October by Smatkomo: 12:02pm On Jul 26, 2021
The Federal Government of Nigeria has again extended the deadline for National Identity Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification to the 31st of October 2021.
Enrolment statistics showed that there have been low enrolments in schools and hospitals therefore the decision is to address this issue and also to consider the request made by stakeholders to address these areas and as well accommodate registrations from foreigners and diplomatic missions, diaspora, and hard-to-reach remote areas.

It was also reported that there were presented a total of 59.8 million unique NIN enrolments, with an average of three to four SIMs per NIN in the country, and as of July 24, 2021, there are over 5,500 enrolment systems within and outside Nigeria.

According to the statement, the decision also followed a review of the progress of the exercise which has shown significant progress, hence the need to consolidate the gains of the enrolment and NIN-SIM verification process across the country.

According to a statement signed by Kayode Adegoke, Head, Corporate Communications, National Identity Management Commission, reads “The administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the extension as part of efforts to make it easier for its citizens within and outside the country, and legal residents to obtain the NIN and it is important to take advantage of the extension.

“The NIN-SIM linkage also makes it easier for the security agencies to carry out their statutory duties and the relevant parastatals under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy are supporting them as required.

Business / CBN To Launch Own Digital Currency October 1 by Smatkomo: 6:34am On Jul 26, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that it will launch the pilot scheme of its digital currency by October 1, 2021.

The CBN announced this during a webinar on Thursday as it presented its digital currency initiative to stakeholders.

The information technology director for the bank, Rakiya Mohammed, disclosed that CBN had been researching since 2017 to develop and adopt the digital currency.

The project called ‘GIANT’ will run on the hyper-ledger fabric blockchain, an open-source project for developing blockchain-based products, solutions, and applications used by private enterprises.

Ms Mohammed said the bank might conduct a proof of concept before the end of this year.

During the presentation, the CBN stated that about 80 per cent of central banks worldwide were currently entertaining the possibility of issuing “central bank digital currency” (CBDC), and Nigeria could not be left behind.

The financial regulatory institution maintained that the digital currency’s launch would include and allow macro-management and growth and cross-border trade facilitation.

In addition, it will also give room for financial inclusion, monetary policy effectiveness, improved payment efficiency, revenue tax collection, remittance improvement, and targeted social intervention.
The CBN initiative came as countries across the globe have shown interest in adopting the trade of digital assets.

African countries with officially recognised digital assets include South Africa with the digital Rand and Ghana’s e-cedi.
