Verdict
The Tecno Phantom V Fold2 is perhaps the most affordable foldable on the Indian market and maybe even outside India too. It's nice to see this cutting-edge tech trickle down to budget-friendly hardware. And yet, in the grand scheme, the device has all the bells and whistles a foldable should have, including a stylus pen support.

However, some corners had to be cut to keep the price low. For instance, the speakers aren't amazing, the charging speed could be better, the battery life is underwhelming, and the chipset feels a little dated in 2024. However, the biggest turn-off for us was the limited max brightness on both displays and the fact that they share a single ambient sensor under the cover screen.


Conversely, the V Fold2 surprises with excellent build quality and thin, lightweight design. It also has a decent camera system too.

So if you are willing to make these compromises, the V Fold2 is probably the most sensible solution in the foldable segment and it won't break the bank as most other foldables do.

268 Skin Tones Database: A Technological Milestone for Inclusive Imaging
The foundation of TECNO’s #ToneProud campaign is its new 268 skin tone database, a collection developed to improve how AI-driven imaging systems capture various skin tones.

By assigning specific color codes to skin tones, TECNO is reducing bias in color accuracy, ensuring that all skin tones are rendered authentically.

This database—the largest in the industry—was created in collaboration with color science experts and helps power TECNO’s Universal Tone technology, which enhances camera accuracy across the skin tone spectrum.

This campaign addresses findings from a 2018 MIT and Stanford study, which highlighted biases in skin tone representation within AI systems.

TECNO’s #ToneProud is a direct response to this, spotlighting how research and scientific classification can advance AI to deliver unbiased imaging.


Global Voices Join the Movement
To amplify its message, TECNO’s campaign brings together international celebrities from diverse backgrounds, including Indonesian singer Anggun, Saudi Arabian filmmaker Fatima Al-Banawi, Nigerian musician Johnny Drille, and Polish actress Ewa Kępys.

In a campaign film, each celebrity shares personal experiences of misrepresentation in digital imaging and the importance of inclusive technology.

TECNO prompts individuals globally to discover their unique skin tone code through its site, 268toneproud.com, and join the conversation online using hashtags like #ToneProud and #UniversalTone.

“We know that skin tone misrepresentation matters deeply, especially for our consumers in emerging markets,” says Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO in a press release.

“#ToneProud is our commitment to fair representation and a call to recognize and celebrate every shade of humanity.”

Tecno has been advocating improvements in skin tones in smartphone photos since last year, and most recently it announced a campaign against skin tone bias in cameraphones last month.

Today, the company is announcing that it's partnered with the University of Leeds and Dar Al-Hekma University to enhance skin tone representation for Saudi Arabia.

Tecno will conduct research with the aforementioned universities to ensure accurate representation of Saudi consumers in mobile imaging, and the company says this will solidify its position "as a leader in inclusive smartphone imaging and promoting skin tone diversity".


Tecno's AI-powered Universal Tone technology unveiled in 2023 authentically captures "the full spectrum of humanity's diversity, with a particular focus on emerging markets", the official press release goes on to state. That focus is no accident, of course, since Tecno has so far been very present and very successful in exactly such markets.

The research done for Saudi Arabian consumers will gradually expand to other countries in the Middle East. Tecno will collect and analyze "a broad spectrum of skin tones in the region", aiming to "better represent and adapt to the diverse complexions unique to Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East".

The company will also work on fine-tuning its image processing algorithms to cater to the characteristics of Saudi and Middle Eastern skin tones.

Over the past four years, the partnership has reached 17,370 refugee children and 40 refugee DAFI scholars, as well as provided support to teachers and school infrastructure.

Among the 11,500 new refugee students expected to enroll in 2024, TECNO’s support through the primary education programme will benefit over 7,000 children in Kenya, helping them unlock their full potential to thrive in their adulthood.

In collaboration with partners like TECNO, UNHCR commits to enrolling over 55,000 out-of-school children in primary schools in Dadaab and Kakuma camps over the next four years.

Helping in Kenya
With 774,370 refugees and asylum-seekers as of May 2024, Kenya is the fifth largest refugee-hosting country in Africa. Kenya’s refugee camps Dadaab and Kakuma, as well as Kalobeyei Settlement Center, house over 217,000 school-aged refugee children. Despite a high gross enrolment rate, school-aged children’s net enrolment is just 53%.

TECNO’s financial support in 2024 is already helping to bolster UNHCR’s efforts to improve educational outcomes for refugee children in Kenya. They achieve this through the provision of scholastic materials for students, hygiene kits for girls, infrastructure construction, as well as resources for teachers and school activities.

Inclusive and equitable quality education is a cornerstone of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically Goal 4, and remains a long-term objective of UNHCR. The organization’s primary education programming is customized to each country operation around four main objectives and employs location-specific strategies to effectively address the needs of refugee children. The planning and implementation of these initiatives are continuously enhanced drawing on insights from past interventions, to create safe, and stimulating learning environments that reduces the risk of seeing children leave school.
