On 19 July 2011 the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship announced the inclusion of Perth in the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS). The minister also agreed to include Perth as a regional area for family sponsored applications through the regional General Skilled Migration (GSM) programs.
In summary, Perth will be classified as a regional area for the following migration programs:
•
Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 119 / 857)
•
Skilled Regional sponsored provisional (subclass 475)
•
Skilled Regional sponsored provisional (subclass 487)
•
Skilled Regional permanent (subclass 887).
As a result, employers located in Perth and surrounding areas will be able to access the RSMS and the family sponsored regional GSM visa subclasses above to recruit and sponsor skilled workers for a greater range of occupations than currently available under the Temporary Business (Long Stay) Subclass 457 and other permanent skilled visa programs. This means that the whole of Western Australia will be eligible for these programs.
The department has commenced work on these changes and will make further announcements once they are in place.
Why are these programs being extended to Perth?
The government recognises that different regions face different opportunities and pressures. The diverse nature of the Australian labour market means that it is important to recognise unique local circumstances and tailor migration solutions accordingly.
Due to Perth’s low unemployment rate businesses rely heavily on the subclass 457 and permanent employer sponsored visa programs to source the skilled workers they need. The inclusion of Perth as an eligible area for the RSMS and the family sponsored regional GSM is one of the ways the government can help to address the particular skill needs of Western Australia.
About the RSMS
The RSMS is a visa program that allows Australian employers in regional and low population growth areas of Australia to nominate foreign skilled workers to fill skilled vacancies within their business. This visa program provides concessions for employers and visa applicants in recognition of the difficulties many regional or remote communities are faced with when attracting skilled workers.
RSMS applicants generally need to be less than 45 years old, hold an Australian diploma or higher qualification and have at least a functional level of English proficiency. Applicants who are unable to satisfy any of the age, skill and English language requirements may still be considered if they can demonstrate that exceptional circumstance exist.
In the 2011-12 Budget, the government announced that the RSMS program would be expected to deliver up to 16 000 skilled migrants to regional and low population growth areas of Australia.

jennykadry: First off @ Iamacapella I disagree with you in the area of jobs.What kind of work are you looking for? posh jobs?? is it the same Australia that people come and get a job in under one week? Tell me what kind of work you are looking for and I will tell you if you stand a chance. There is quite a huge Nigerian community here and we all keep in touch so I know relatives that come and snap jobs ASAP. You cannot be in Australia for 5 months and tell me you've got no job. You know what you have a good sponsor, maybe if you didn't have someone there helping you out financially, you would have stopped using school tight schedule as an excuse and got yourself something to do. Even nursing students who study full time from morning till late day still work how much more? Someone recently included her sister in her temporary visa application and this girl came in March and already working 2 jobs.

I mentioned it here that a relative of mine who studied nursing and just finished school not too long ago. Not even 860 hours of placements at the hospital stopped this girl from working during the week and weekend. We were her sponsor and she did not have to work, but guess work, those days she would go from the hospital placements to work in her school of nursing uniform paid off. Cos the same employer (took an interest in her) sponsored her for her permanent residence and she recently just became a citizen. She did not even ask for sponsorship cos she was eligible to apply for her own PR but she chose to go with them cos it was a lot easier for her and less stressful.

No one said it's easy in Australia or any other foreign country but are they jobs in Australia, Hell yeahhhhhhh. The one question is, are people willing to get their hands dirty.

i dont have a problem working menial jobs, i mean if that only is what is available for migrants(students), provided i make the dough and it does not eat up all my study time(i mean after paying thousands of dollars of tuition, anything below magna cum laude and thereabouts, will be considered a snag where i come from). . .but then it'd be better for my career prospects and i'd happy as well if i can get a Occupational Health and Safety (HSE)job cos i have an International Certification for that (NEBOSH) Int Gen Cert...

Jenny please how feasible or possible is that? fortunately, Perth is an oil city i think? Do they recognise only Aussie qualifications? NEBOSH is a UK qualification

so i'd like to know which option to take out; TAFEWA or TAFESA as regards PR Visa, job opportunities and then University pathway. Thanks!

i have been following all the posts here. I must say you guys are all doing a great job.

i'd be be God's grace migrating to Australia come january, for a diploma in Geosciences TAFE Adelaide. . . though i already have a Bsc in Physics/Astro UNN.

My question to folks already over there like Mrs Jenny is : Do i stand a chance of getting a HSE job with my NEBOSH Int Gen Cert and my NEBOSH Int Oil/Gas Tech Cert while i'm studying, and how soon can i when i get there cos i might not be so loaded cashwise?
