The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has scheduled judgment for June 30 in the trial of former Niger Delta Minister, Godsays Orubebe. The tribunal chose the date on Thursday after Orubebe concluded his defence having called two witnesses, including himself. Orubebe was earlier in November 8, 2015 arraigned on a four-count charge of false asset declaration and bribery by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation. The prosecution, on March 8 this year, announced an amendment to the charge, reducing the court to one. He pleaded not guilty to the amended charge of false asset declaration on March 8 when he was re-arraigned. The charge was amended was re arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on an amended charge of one count. The single count reads: “That you, Godsday Peter Orubebe on or about June 29, 2011 while being a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in charge of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable tribunal, did make a false declaration of assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau when you failed to declare Plot 2057, Asokoro District, Abuja on assumption of office on September 26, 2007 and on leaving office (at the end of your tenure) on June 29, 2011 and you hereby commit an offence contrary to section 15 of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act Cap 15 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under section 23(2) of the same Act.” Read more: http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/06/cct-fixes-june-30-for-judgment-in.html

The Federal Government says that it will not go back on the 45 per cent increase in electricity tariff, adding that a reversal will cost over N575 billion. According to nta.ng, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, stated this in Abuja on Tuesday when he briefed the Senate Committees on Labour and Power during a public hearing on the new electricity tariff. The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission ( NERC) announced a 45 per cent increment in electricity tariff earlier in January. The Senate after considering a motion at plenary in January, directed that the tariff be reversed to enable the Senate to conclude hearing on the case. However, the minister explained that the new tariff could not be reversed as it was necessary for the market to survive. He said that a number of indices, such as borrowing rate for investors, exchange rate , availability and cost of gas, among others also contributed to the hike. The dreaded ISIS tried to sell their slaves through Facebook, India Times reports. One of the posts reads, “Yay, or nay?” to bid for a “another sabiyah [slave], also about $8,000" Facebook took down the post within hours, but ISIS has many such women they can sell off at a moment's notice. The terror group's reign is said to be faltering after attack on the group by Iraqi forces, as well as Western forces. Yet, true to form, ISIS fighters are trying to go 'by the book' in their dealings with sex slaves - they have elaborate rules about buying, selling, and having sex with girls - even if they are minors. “We have seen a great deal of brutality, but the content that ISIS has been disseminating over the past two years has surpassed it all for sheer evil,” said Steven Stalinsky, the institute’s executive director, using the common acronym for the Islamic State. “Sales of slave girls on social media is just one more example of this.” “What makes her worth that price? Does she have an exceptional skill?” someone responds on a photo. Read more: http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/isis-is-tried-to-sell-their-sex-slaves.html

President Muhammadu Buhari has noted that some significant amount of assets have already been recovered from looters of public treasury, but said the Ministry of Information and Culture will make public the funds and assets recovered as well as provide periodic updates. The President stated this on Sunday while making this year’s Democracy Day broadcast, cutting short the expectations of Nigerians who had been told that Buhari would make public the details of the money recovered from looters during his Democracy Day national address. In the words of the President: “We are also engaged in making recoveries of stolen assets some of which are in different jurisdictions. The processes of recovery can be tedious and time consuming, but today I can confirm that thus far: significant amount of assets have been recovered. “A considerable portion of these are at different stages of recovery. Full details of the status and categories of the assets will now be published by the Ministry of Information and updated periodically.” Read more: http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/lai-mohammed-to-publish-names-of.html

Nigeria’s central bank governors are meeting amid a gloomy financial outlook for Africa’s largest economy. Numbers released last week show the country's economy contracting. Economists blame a shortage of fuel, persistent power outages and a fall in the production of Nigeria’s top moneymaker. That’s what analysts say after the National Bureau of Statistics announced the economy contracted by about four-tenths of a percent in the first quarter of this year. Africa economist at London-based Capital Economics John Asbhourne said a shortage of fuel and shortage of dollars to pay for imported goods stymied economic growth. He doesn’t expect the second quarter to be much better. “It’s very, very likely the economy will shrink again this quarter, and then we’re in a recession,” said Asbhourne. Oil is Nigeria’s top export and the primary funder of the government's budget. The global drop in the price of crude has cut revenue and harmed the economy. Also, oil production has dropped by a half-million barrels per day because militants blew up several key pipelines in the oil-producing Niger Delta region. Ashbourne said the government hasn’t helped things by imposing controls on foreign exchange, leading to a shortage of dollars in the country. The shortage of dollars has ripple effects, including the shortage of gasoline, because Nigeria imports most of its fuel. Nigeria's Federal Minister of Power, Housing and Works, Babatunde Fashola, has stated that he is working on a housing model which will be suitable and acceptable to all Nigerians. “A lot of work is going on and very soon you will see the result of that work. Let me be very clear; we are in a result business but I have learnt that it is results that are sustainable that become enduring," he said. Commenting on the campaign promise by the All Progressives Congress to build 250,000 houses annually, Fashola said his focus was on long-term solution rather than on the number of houses the present administration would build. “Right now, I am not focusing on the number of houses that this administration will build; rather, I’m focusing on a long-term solution that whether this administration is there tomorrow or not, it will be difficult to say you want to change it because it works. In a matter of weeks, we will finish and unveil the design. We already have a budget then we can start something to validate our concept; then we will expand next year," he said. http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/fashola-comments-on-apcs-promise-to.html |
About 25 licences that were given to private operators between 2002 and 2014 to build refinery complexes in Nigeria will be reviewed at again and those that have remained inactive will be revoked, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has said. Kachikwu said last week when he hosted a group of online news outlets in Abuja that as part of its ongoing efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, the government was going on to review the status of the refinery licences. He noted that those who had crossed certain acceptable operational thresholds would be allowed to go on with their works while those who haven’t would be cancelled. “The next stage of this is that we are going to look at all the licences that have been given out; some of them were given a window within which to build their refineries and we are going to revoke the ones that were not used,” said Kachikwu in response to a question on the status of the licenses. He further explained: “The reason they did not use the licences is that unless the price is right on the outer point, your economics cannot balance. So, no refinery investment in the world comes to a country where there is no liberalisation and it is not just Nigeria because if you don’t liberalise, nobody is going to invest in your refineries. The Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II has said that financial recklessness and lack of national planning were largely responsible for the current hardship been experienced by Nigerian masses. He disclosed this on Saturday in Abuja at the 3rd annual lecture of the Zubairiyya Foundation, Abuja chapter themed: “Islamic perspective on the nation’s economic and social policy”. Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said if the nation’s population is growing by 10 percent and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) also grow at the same margin, it means there is stagnation, and that if the GDP growth is less than the population growth, then there is problem as it means that poverty is growing ahead of development. “The youths should be mobilized, trained and be made to be productive. We should give premium to planning and be financial discipline, this is like saving for the raining day,” he said. He likened Nigerian situation to the time of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) when the Egyptians were warned by the prophet that they would experience seven years of abundance and another seven years of famine hence the need to save part of the seven years of abundance for the other period. Indicative of rising prices of goods across Nigeria, inflation rate has been skyrocketing and rattling consumers. Last month, the inflation rate jumped to a six-year high at 13.7 per cent, up by 0.9 per cent point higher than the 12.8 per cent recorded in March. The report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated that the April's rate was the highest recorded in Nigeria since August 2010. Inflation rate is an indicator used for measuring a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money. This is not the first time Nigeria's economy is witnessing high inflationary shocks. Analysis of reports of inflation rates released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) from 1970 to date revealed that Nigeria recorded an average inflation rate of 72.8 per cent in 1995. The least inflation rate seen in the period analyzed was 3.2 per cent in 1972. The NBS had in January this year forecasted that the nation's inflation rate would skyrocket, crossing double digit in 2016. An economist, Dr. Shehu Usman, said the rising inflation rate was not "unexpected" considering high prices of market commodities. "If you have been following the trend, this leap should not come as a surprise to you," he said. Many reasons have been identified for the inflation: high pump prices of petroleum products paid by Nigerians, recent hike in electricity tariffs, and scarcity of exchange rates that has pushed up the prices of imported goods. Usman had expressed pessimism that the recent hike in the price of petrol from N86.50k to N145 would have ripple effects on commodities, transportation, and general utilities. Even before the hike in prices, most Nigerians bought petrol above the official price as reported by the NBS. For instance, the Petrol Price Watch report released recently by the NBS showed that Nigerians bought petrol at an average price of N162.82 in April, above the then official price of N86.50k. Unexpectedly, the NBS reported that food supplies are getting "tighter," forcing consumers to chase fewer food items with much money. This is even reflected in the scarcity of tomatoes and high price of rice, two commodities popularly used in most homes in the country for meals. "This is the time for consumers to tighten their belts and brace up for hard time," Usman said. Read more http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/nigeria-consumers-groan-as-inflation.html |
The church’s general assembly, which opened in Edinburgh on Saturday, voted in favour of extending a law passed last May that permits ministers to be in same-sex civil partnerships. The decision, after years of deliberation, means the church maintains the traditional view marriage as between a man and woman, but allows individual congregations to “opt-out” if they wish to appoint a minister or deacon in a same-sex marriage or civil partnership. Any wider consideration of the theological understanding of same-sex marriage will not take place until the Theological Forum presents its report to the church next year. More than 850 commissioners from across Scotland, the rest of the UK, Africa, Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbean registered to attend this year’s assembly, which began with a ceremony at the Assembly Hall attended by Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon. The opening saw the appointment of a new Moderator, after the Right Rev Dr Angus Morrison stood down from the 12-month role. He was replaced by the Rev Dr Russell Barr, the founder of Edinburgh-based homelessness charity Fresh Start. Morrison said he felt a “sense of gratitude, relief and heartfelt appreciation” as he left the post, while Barr said his predecessor was a “great ambassador for the Church of Scotland”. http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/church-of-scotland-votes-to-allow.html |

Why State Governments are Seeking $3.25b Loan from World Bank – El-Rufai The Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has declared that state governments in the country were broke. This was as he disclosed that governors of the 36 states are putting machinery in place to access a $3.25bn loan from the World Bank in a bid to survive the current economic downturn in the country which has made it difficult for some of them to pay workers’ salaries. Briefing State House Correspondents about the decision to approach the World Bank at the end of a meeting of Nigeria Governors’ Forum at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, El-Rufai explained that the loan being sought after is capable of turning around the fortunes of the states. “The World Bank portfolio for the states for this year is $4.25bn and out of that, $3.25bn is lying there undisbursed, which means the states are not meeting their conditions or not moving fast enough to draw this $3.25bn. “You know $3.25bn can do a lot to improve the lives and livelihood of our citizens in the states, and the World Bank has expressed its flexibility to look into the challenges we are facing as well as the procedure to ease accessing this money. The World Bank wants us to withdraw the money as quickly as possible so that our citizens will get the benefits from health to education, agriculture and the revival of livestock and water supply. “These are the areas for which most of these funds are dedicated and we all need the money, because we are all broke. So, we are going to work very hard to try to get the money in trust,” he explained. http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/why-state-governments-are-seeking-325b.html |
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said he ordered a heightened military presence in the restive Niger Delta region to deal with a resurgence of attacks on oil and gas facilities, a day after yet another pipeline explosion. British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond warned on Saturday military action would not end a wave of attacks in the southern swamps because it did not address rising anger among residents over poverty despite sitting on much of Nigeria’s oil wealth. The rise in attacks in the Delta in the last few weeks has driven Nigerian oil output to a more than 20-year low, worsening a drain on public finances. A group calling itself the Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for several sophisticated attacks. Speaking at a meeting with Shell’s upstream head, Andrew Brown, Buhari said he had instructed the chief of naval staff to reorganise and strengthen the military Joint Task Force to deal with the militancy. “We have to be very serious with the situation in the Niger Delta because it threatens the national economy,” Buhari said in a statement. http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/president-buhari-orders-heightened.html |
As more people transact banking and business online, experts raise questions about security from hackers targeting the continent. Amid global alarm about cyber theft, authorities warn that banks and other businesses and institutions in Africa are increasingly vulnerable to online fraud and theft. African and international cyber security experts, including representatives of government and the United Nations, will gather in Nairobi in June to discuss online threats and how to fight them. As more Africans use the internet, businesses and governments are providing more transactions and services online. But experts are raising questions about whether those sites are secure from cyber criminals. Many small and mid-sized businesses cannot afford expensive security measures such as firewalls and malware protection while governments also use templates to build their websites, which cost less but may also be more vulnerable to attack. Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa see attacks Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa are among African countries that have already suffered millions of dollars in losses to cyber crime. Nigerian officials estimated the country’s institutions lost $630 million annually to cyber attacks, theft and software piracy, nearly one percent of the country’s gross domestic product while online bank fraud more than doubled. http://www.sofreedomains.com/2016/05/cyber-threat-looms-over-africa.html |
Lee County Deputies said a 15-year-old South Fort Myers High School girl had sex with multiple male students in the bathroom of the school. "Shock. Disbelief. Concern. Sad," Eric Struble said. He's a parent to two 15-year-old girls. Fox4now.com reports that the girl admitted to having sex with multiple male students in the bathroom, and 25 male students were identified going inside the bathroom during the timeframe the girl was inside. Students said it happened in the main boys bathroom on the second floor. "Like, how did it happen? Like, where was everybody at?" 18-year-old SFMHS student Petislin Cadeau said. He said he heard some of the football team was involved, and the incident was caught on camera. "I heard a video was around but I never really saw it or anything. It just like circulated around," Cadeau said. Another student said it was recorded and sent around school on Snapchat. The app allows you to record a ten second video of whatever you please, and once you choose who you want to send it to, they can only open it once and it's supposed to disappear. The student said some of the videos were saved. "It's our job to protect our children and to teach them right from wrong," Struble said. The incident happened after school hours, but Struble said parents should have still been told. "Somebody should have been notified or been aware of what was going on, I believe," he said. "You would think there would be more supervision basically to not allow it to happen," Cadeau said.
