The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and banned him for 30 years.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, issued a statement on Monday confirming the decision.

According to the party, El-Rufai violated its constitution, manifesto, and values. He also breached the Electoral Act, which gives political parties full control over their membership.

The SDP warned the public and its members to avoid any dealings with El-Rufai. It declared that he no longer represents the party at any level or for any purpose.

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has boldly dismissed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s order requiring him to seek security clearance before visiting Edo State. Obi, unfazed by the warning, declared that he would return to the state whenever he pleases.

Speaking in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Thursday, July 24, Obi made his position clear while attending an event at Christ The King College (CKC), his alma mater.

The American passport has taken a major hit in global mobility, dropping to 10th place in the 2025 Henley Passport Index.

Meanwhile, Singapore now holds the top spot, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 193 destinations worldwide.

In comparison, US passport holders can now access just 182 destinations without a visa.

That’s a significant slip from previous years when the US consistently ranked among the top five.

Asian countries continue to dominate the top of the rankings. Japan and South Korea share second place, giving their citizens access to 190 destinations.


Not far behind, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Finland, Ireland, and Denmark are tied for third with 189.

The fourth spot includes Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, and Luxembourg, offering access to 188 destinations. Greece, New Zealand, and Switzerland follow in fifth with 187.

Notably, the United Kingdom has climbed to sixth, now granting entry to 186 destinations.


Australia, Malta, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic are all tied in seventh with 185.

Canada, once a top-tier passport power, now ranks eighth alongside Estonia and the United Arab Emirates, each with 184 visa-free destinations.

Meanwhile, Croatia, Slovakia, Latvia, and Slovenia take ninth place.

Joining the United States in 10th place are Iceland and Lithuania.


At the bottom of the rankings sits Afghanistan, whose citizens can only access 25 countries without a visa.

This highlights the deepening global gap in travel freedom.

According to Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and the creator of the index, global travel access has expanded on average.

In 2006, travelers could visit just 58 countries without a visa. That number has nearly doubled to 111 in 2024.

However, Kaelin warned that this growth has not been equal.

While top-ranking countries continue to gain more travel access, those at the bottom remain severely restricted.

The index uses exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).


It has become a key benchmark for comparing the strength of passports across the globe.

With 2025 shaping global mobility trends, the latest rankings show how politics, diplomacy, and international relations continue to shape who can travel and who can’t.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a dire warning about Nigeria’s growing malnutrition crisis.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the agency revealed that 3.5 million children are currently suffering from severe acute malnutrition, with over 400,000 children at risk of preventable death within the next 38 days if critical nutrition supplies run out.

UNICEF Nigeria’s Chief of Field Operations and Emergencies, Judith Leveille, raised the alarm during a joint press briefing in Abuja.

The briefing focused on the nutrition emergency in the North-East and North-West and the European Union’s support for victims of the Yelewata crisis in Benue State.

According to Leveille, Nigeria will face a complete stockout of essential therapeutic nutrition supplies by September 1, if no intervention occurs.
“We have one month and eight days to prevent the deaths of over 400,000 children,” she said. “Among them could be Nigeria’s next Nobel Laureate or a future innovator. We must act now.”


Leveille highlighted the role of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) in treating malnourished children and urged all stakeholders to step in immediately to avoid catastrophe.

In fact, she described visits to stabilisation centres where medical teams worked tirelessly to save malnourished children like Memunah and Aisha.

Despite their efforts, she noted that these centres have already reached maximum capacity.

Moreover, “We haven’t even hit the peak of the lean season,” she warned, explaining that things will likely get worse over the next month.

Camilla Higgins, Director of the Nigeria INGO Forum, supported the call for immediate action.
She described the scale of the crisis using stark imagery. “Imagine filling Abuja National Stadium 60 times. That’s the number of children currently battling severe acute malnutrition.”

Higgins stressed that international donor cuts, especially from the United States, have weakened the humanitarian response.


Consequently, “Admissions in nutrition centres have surged by up to 73% in some areas.

Even adults now show signs of malnutrition,” she said.

She urged the Nigerian government to lead the response and coordinate effectively with international partners.

Therefore, “We’re ready to help, but the state must lead,” Higgins said.


Bilal Ahmad, Head of Mission for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), painted a grim picture from Sokoto State, where medical teams are struggling to cope.

“We started the rainy season with 60 planned beds. Now we’re at 120, and demand is still rising,” he said.

Meanwhile, “In Katsina, we had to double our bed space from 450 to 900. Children are arriving too late and in critical condition.”


Ahmad reported mortality rates ranging from 3.7% to 7.7% across various regions.

Notably, he warned that many of these deaths could be prevented with immediate support.

He called for more treatment centres, increased access to therapeutic food, and better infrastructure to reach underserved areas.

The humanitarian community has raised its voice. As a result, it’s now up to Nigeria’s leadership and global partners to respond before more lives are lost.

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, has declared that Peter Obi was fully aware of his decision to attend the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by Julius Abure.


Datti made the revelation during an interview on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.

He said his role was that of a peacemaker working to unite the divided party.

“I assure you, every step I take is with the knowledge of the concerned parties,” Datti said. “Labour Party is not a party to abandon. We must talk and unite.”

He emphasized that the internal divisions in the party must not be ignored, and he is taking proactive steps to promote reconciliation.


“I’m a positive catalyst,” he noted, “bringing people together to rescue Nigeria.”

This comes amid a serious leadership crisis that has split the Labour Party into factions.

Many key figures, including Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, now recognize Senator Nenadi Usman as the party’s Interim National Chairman.

Usman was elected last Friday, alongside Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary and others.


However, the party’s National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, rejected the new interim committee.

He insisted that Julius Abure remains the legitimate leader of the party.

A major legal twist came in April, when the Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeal judgment that had recognized Abure as the Labour Party chairman.

The apex court ruled that the matter was an internal party issue and therefore not within the court’s jurisdiction.


The Supreme Court backed the appeal filed by Nenadi Usman and one other, describing it as meritorious.

Despite Obi and Otti identifying with the Usman-led faction, Datti defended his engagement with Abure’s NEC, stating he was on a mission to encourage dialogue.


Responding to Obidient Movement Coordinator Yunusa Tanko, who claimed Obi’s camp wasn’t aware of the meeting, Datti dismissed the claim.

He said he deals directly with Obi, not his aides.

“I don’t talk to Mr. Tanko,” he said. “I relate with His Excellency Peter Obi, and he is aware. Maybe he hasn’t had time to brief the Tankos around him.”

Datti also said the Labour Party, like many other political parties, has suffered due to “the captors of the Nigerian state.” He urged party leaders to rise and heal the divisions from within.

Supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State on Wednesday, July 23, stormed the Port Harcourt International Airport to receive former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, in a dramatic political show of solidarity.
