Science/TechnologyTop 5 Ways To Save On Energy Cost In Naija by SolarElectra(op): 3:40pm On Apr 08, 2015
1. If your fan has a counter-clockwise direction, use this. Use ceiling fans to cool down for less rather than use your AC (Air Conditioner) all the time.
2. Make sure your exterior doors and windows are closed when the AC is on.
3. Change or clean the filters in your AC to ensure peak performance. Also make sure they are well maintained regularly.
4. Don’t allow the sun from overheating your home. Use window blinds and drapes. Use light-colored curtains that allows light to come in but blocks the sun rays from coming in. Trees and shrubs could also help on the exterior.
5. Buy energy efficient CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) or LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs. To save even more, use motion sensor on your wall switches.
6. Make sure your fridge door is always closed properly. Keep your freezer full as it uses less energy than empty one. Buy an energy efficient fridge if you can.
7. Use a pot size appropriate for the burner on your stove. Heat gets lost when burner is too big for pot size.
8. Use a power bar for your electronics so you can switch them off from the bar at once. Don’t leave electronics in standby mode – phantom electricity will cost you more in energy usage.
9. Consider buying a laptop instead of desktop computers as they usually use less power.
10. Turning up your AC by just 1 degree can save you 5% in energy consumption.
11. BONUS: if you action on the above items, you can save on upfront cost of your solar power system.
