We did not start documenting history till Europeans returned in the 19th century. There were a few European history about Benin/ife connection in the 17th century I think. A Benin prince was also sent to I think Portugal in the 16th or 17th century.

Benin Empire had a representative in Portugal, like we have ambassadors today.
