The first misconception is about what counts as sex. For many, sex is (only) penetrative intercourse where the man's penis gets lost in a woman's vagina. However, besides the intercourse itself, every other act connected to it are all considered sexual acts. This is the misconception some young ladies hold unfortunately, believing as long as they don't have penetrative sex, they can remain virgins while engaging in other sexual acts. Now let's redefine the question.

1. Can a woman become pregnant without engaging in any sexual act? As far as science is concerned, the answer is no, unless with the aid of external help (in vitro and intrauterine insermination).

2. Can a woman become pregnant without penetrative sex? YES. Any sexual act that introduces sperm into a woman's genital area can lead to pregnancy!

Let's break it down further.

● Fertilisation from penetrative intercourse.

Sex is biologically designed to ensure the man's sperm are deposited through ejaculation as close to the cervix as possible. The cervix is a narrow passage that connects the vagina to the uterus (womb). The sexual act covers most of the distance in the vagina, and the sperm then swims in the vaginal fluid, through the cervix, up the uterus, to get united with the woman's eggs in the fallopian tube. Penetrative intercourse therefore is designed to reduce the distance the sperm will need to swim for by ejaculating close to the cervix.

● Sperm motility

What is obvious now is that a sperm's ability to swim is a great determinant of successful fertilisation. The better the 'swiming capacity' (motility) of the sperms the greater the chance of fertilisation. Some persons have a medical condition called asthenospermia where only less than 32% of their sperms are able to swim properly. Humans also vary in their sperm motility. What we sometimes call 'sharpshooters' among men are men whose sperms (among other factors) are 'excellent swimmers'.

●Pregnancy without penetrative intercourse.

In lieu of the great distance the sperm will need to cover, the chance of pregnancy occurring without penetrative intercourse is quite slim, or rare. However it is a possibility.
Non penetrative sexual acts that could lead to pregnancy:

●Ejaculating very close to the woman's genital area (from masturbation or MouthAction).

Other sexual activities could then introduce the ejaculate into the vaginal opening.

●Contact of genitals.

This could be post ejaculation, or even without ejaculation. A man's pre-ejaculatory fluid (what is called precum in vulgar terms) can contain enough sperm potent enough to impregnate a woman. If therefore there is a contact of genitals, even if there is no penetration, pregnancy could result if the sperm in the pre-ejaculatory fluid find their way into the vagina and swim their way to the 'promise land'. However, this is also rare as a recent study showed only about 16.7% of men contained enough potent sperm in their pre-ejaculate to impregnate a woman.

Factors that increase the likelihood of pregnancy occurring without penetrative intercourse:

●Men with very healthy or potent sperm.

It is established that some men have such potent sperm that unprotected sex with them will almost always lead to pregnancy if the woman is in her fertile window. Such a man can likely impregnate a woman even without penetration.

●Ovulation.

Sexual acts that introduce sperm into a woman occurring around her ovulation period increases the chance of this occuring. This is because during ovulation the cervical mucus is thinner reducing viscosity and easing sperm motility.

●First timers.

A man who has never had intercourse before might 'pack a punch' in his ejaculate (and pre-ejaculate) increasing the chance of this occuring even without penetration. This is however just my hypothesis.

Don't forget that the chance of this occuring is slim, but it is a possibility, with a study reporting as many as 45 women claiming to have become pregnant without penetrative intercourse.

If you choose chastity, which you should, make it total. Don't go playing around so you don't get the shocker of your life!
