Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has revealed that he once gave his wife, Jumobi, the first ₦100 million cheque he received. Speaking in an interview on with Morayo on The Morayo Show, which began trending on Wednesday, the 65-year-old actor described himself as an “incurable romantic,” saying he enjoys showering his wife with gifts because gift-giving is her love language. According to RMD, one of the greatest compliments he receives from his wife is hearing that the important things she owns were bought by him. “I’m an incurable romantic. These days, it isn’t about flowers and chocolates anymore because ladies like money,” he said. Recalling the moment he received his first ₦100 million cheque, the actor said he immediately instructed his manager to hand it over to his wife. “The first biggest cheque I ever received was for ₦100 million. When it was presented to me, I told my manager to give it to my wife. When she got it, she asked if I wanted her to keep it for the children. I told her no, that she should keep it for herself and do whatever she wanted with it,” he said. RMD added that he knew most of the money would eventually be spent on their children. “The trick is that I know 90 per cent of the money will eventually end up being spent on the children. I like giving my wife the biggest things I have so she never has to ask for anything. All the big and beautiful things in the house are hers,” he said. RMD married Jumobi, a former television presenter, in 2000, four years after the death of his first wife, May Ellen Ezekiel. The couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in December 2025. The Delta-born actor has four children, two from his first marriage and two from his current union. https://www.operanewsapp.com/ng/en/share/detail?news_id=005fb767d8712b6405b39ff869ee6354&news_entry_id=s7d42a8e6260729en_ng&open_type=tanscoded&request_id=fb8e476a7c9bf50cf140059efabfe06b9b4d6c0b&from=publisher

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrdJ9Qa6st8?si=aEFjZb2NjRaGeIg1 Nollywood actor, Jimmy Rolland, has claimed that his former wife deceived him into believing she was a virgin before they got married, describing the revelation on their wedding night as one of the biggest disappointments of his life. Speaking on the African A-List podcast in an episode uploaded on Saturday, the actor said he ignored several warning signs before marrying his ex-wife because he was convinced she was truthful. “I am not a fool. I saw signs, but I was hypnotised by my mother-in-law,” he said. According to Rolland, both his mother and some friends had advised him against the marriage after what he described as spiritual consultations. “My mother and friends made spiritual consultations and warned me not to marry her, but I did not listen,” he said. The actor said he and his former wife dated for four years before getting married and that she repeatedly told him she was a virgin. “She told me she was a virgin, so I did not bother to make attempts to make love to her. We dated for four good years,” Rolland said. He explained that after their introduction, she insisted they wait until after their wedding before becoming intimate. “After our introduction, she said, ‘Till the wedding night.’ I had to wait for some months, then on the wedding night, it ended up to be a lie,” he said. Rolland said he was devastated by the discovery and admitted he considered ending the relationship at the time. “I was disappointed, and I should have walked away, but I did not. It was not me,” he said. Reflecting on the breakdown of the marriage, the actor said the most painful part was losing access to his two children after the separation. “What was disheartening is that we have two kids together, and she took them away.” He claimed the emotional distress of being separated from his children later affected his health. “Because of the children she took away, I had a stroke. “Because of too much thinking about those children, I had a stroke,” he said. Rolland added that his mother continues to mourn the separation from her grandchildren. “My mother still cries because she wants to see those children,” Rolland said The actor did not disclose when the marriage ended or whether there are ongoing legal proceedings regarding custody of the children. A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man has been run over by a vehicle at Orogun Bus Stop along the Ojoo/Iwo Road in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. Eyewitnesses told The PUNCH on Saturday that the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Friday while the victim was crossing the expressway. One of the eyewitnesses, who identified herself simply as Iya Kadijat, said the hit-and-run driver fled the scene immediately after the incident. She said, “I was at the bus stop when the incident happened. I was waiting to board a commercial vehicle to General Gas Bus Stop, under the bridge before Iwo Road, when I suddenly heard a loud noise. The driver did not stop at all, while the man died immediately. “I was so panicked, so I didn’t know what to do. I had to leave immediately in an available Micra taxi,” she said. Another eyewitness, who did not want her name in print, said, “Almost all the shops were closed at that time because of yesterday’s weather. This morning, we asked around the community and nobody knows him. So, we are calling on the authorities concerned to come and evacuate the corpse before it causes environmental hazards. “We are also calling on the authorities concerned to announce on radio and television stations that whoever has a missing family member around Orogun/Agbowo, especially a man, should check the morgue of a nearby hospital.” When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said he would get in touch with the appropriate authorities for the evacuation. Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has set August 11 as an exclusive live premiere date for his forthcoming album, ‘Oriade’, in London. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ‘OBO’, as the singer is fondly called by fans and industry peers, shared the announcement in a post on his X account, @davido, on Friday. He wrote: “London! Join me on Aug. 11 at the O2 Forum Kentish Town for a very special show. “This will be the first and only chance to hear Oriade performed live, so if you want to experience the new album before anyone else. Tickets are on sale now I’Il see you there! “. NAN reports that Davido had earlier announced to his teeming fans that Oriade, his sixth studio album, would be released on July 31. Derived from the Yoruba words “ori” (destiny) and “adé” (crown), Oriadé translates to “the crowned head”. According to him, the album, with lead single “I Know Who I Be”, is to mark his 15 years in music. “Over fifteen years ago, I decided to trust something I couldn’t fully explain. I just knew music was my destiny,” he told Billboard. “The biggest blessings often come from betting on yourself, even when the destination isn’t in sight yet,” he said. The lead single “I Know Who I Be,” featuring South African producers Jazzwrld and GL Ceejay, is already out and gives the first real taste of where this album is headed. The 13-track Oriade is a deliberate shift back to his original, high-energy African sound rather than heavily pop-focused cross-overs. It follows his 2025 Billboard chart hit album “5ive”. As women across Anambra State and the South-East begin this year’s annual August Meeting, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged them to use the gathering to address pressing social issues, particularly the rising cases of violent abuse and maltreatment of domestic workers. Soludo called on women to use the platform to confront what she described as the disturbing increase in cases of violent abuse, molestation, neglect and inhumane treatment of domestic workers, insisting that the silence surrounding such acts must end. She made the appeal in a message issued on Friday to mark the commencement of the 2026 August Meeting, stressing that women should identify and address emerging social and moral challenges affecting families and society. She urged participants to expand discussions beyond the traditional focus on community development projects and social activities to include practical and lasting solutions to the growing social and moral crises threatening family values and child development. She said, “The recent reports of lethal physical assault, starvation, torture, emotional abuse and other degrading treatment meted out to housemaids, many of them minors, should trouble every conscientious mother. “While the August Meeting has, over the years, remained a powerful platform for advancing community development, promoting peace, strengthening families and preserving cherished religious and cultural values, it must also evolve to respond to pressing social realities, especially those within the domain of family and child raising.” She noted that no society could genuinely claim to uphold the sanctity of motherhood while ignoring the suffering of vulnerable children entrusted to families for guidance, protection and care. “The young girl who helps in your home is somebody’s daughter before she becomes your maid. She deserves dignity before duty, compassion before correction and protection before punishment. “Violence can never be a tool for raising a child or managing a household. As mothers, we have a sacred responsibility to nurture, not to destroy; to protect, not to oppress. “Every child under our roof deserves love, respect and the opportunity to grow in a safe environment,” she added. The Anambra First Lady encouraged women leaders, presidents-general of women’s associations, faith-based organisations and community stakeholders to include discussions on child protection, responsible caregiving, conflict resolution and the rights of domestic workers in their August Meeting deliberations. She also stressed that communities should not merely condemn abuse after it occurs but should build systems that encourage early intervention, reporting and support for victims. “Children often learn by observation. Homes where violence is normalised risk raising another generation that sees cruelty as acceptable. “We urge women to deliberately instil empathy, patience and respect for human dignity in their homes. These virtues are the foundation of a peaceful and responsible society,” she said. While wishing Anambra women fruitful and impactful August Meetings, Soludo expressed confidence that if every community resolved to protect the vulnerable, uphold family values and reject all forms of domestic violence, the annual gathering would become an even more powerful instrument for building safer homes, stronger communities and a more compassionate society. The annual August Meeting remains one of the most significant socio-cultural gatherings of Igbo women, providing a unique forum for collective reflection, community development, family welfare and the promotion of values that strengthen society. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said the electoral umpire cannot achieve full independence without financial autonomy. He warned that reliance on the regular budgetary process could weaken its ability to conduct free, fair and credible elections. Amupitan said granting INEC greater control over its finances was critical to strengthening the commission’s operations and improving public confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections. As reported by Vanguard, he spoke on Thursday while delivering a keynote address at the public presentation of ‘Shadows: Protest Essays on Africa’s Most Consequential Country (1999–2023)’, authored by THISDAY Managing Director, Mr Eniola Bello, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja. The INEC chairman argued that although the constitution provides for the commission’s funding through the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the existing arrangement does not guarantee true financial independence because INEC still depends on the normal appropriation process. “Can INEC truly be independent without financial autonomy? If we are serious about strengthening our institutions and conducting free, fair and credible elections, then financial autonomy is essential,” Amupitan said. He explained that the commission’s dependence on budgetary approvals from other institutions remained a major limitation to its independence. “The Constitution places INEC’s funding on the Consolidated Revenue Fund, and many believe that is sufficient. “However, experience has shown that as long as INEC remains subject to the normal appropriation process and depends on budgetary approvals by other institutions, genuine financial independence remains difficult,” he said. Amupitan said INEC’s mandate goes beyond the conduct of elections, noting that the commission is responsible for voter registration, registration and monitoring of political parties, maintenance of the national voters’ register and the conduct of federal and state elections. He added that the commission also plays a role in supporting local government elections in some respects. “For these reasons, there is a strong case for giving INEC greater operational and financial autonomy to improve efficiency and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process,” the INEC boss said. The chairman, however, stressed that credible elections could not be achieved by INEC alone, noting that political parties, security agencies, the media, civil society organisations and citizens all have important roles to play in strengthening democracy. “When we talk about strengthening institutions, there are several institutions involved in the conduct of elections. “Most times, people think only of the Independent National Electoral Commission, but beyond INEC, we also have the media, the security agencies, civil society organisations and, indeed, the Nigerian people. “The health of our democracy is reflected in the strength of this wider institutional framework,” he said. Amupitan said all stakeholders must collaborate if Nigeria hopes to conduct peaceful and credible elections in 2027. “Therefore, if we truly want the 2027 elections to be free, fair, credible and peaceful, all these institutions must work together,” he added. On concerns surrounding the appointment of INEC leadership, Amupitan said the Constitution had established safeguards by requiring the President to appoint the chairman and national commissioners in consultation with the Council of State and subject to confirmation by the Senate. He, however, noted that the effectiveness of such provisions often depended on the individuals responsible for implementing them. “Sometimes, however, the issue is not the law itself but those who operate it,” he said. The INEC chairman cited the views of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, who argued that Nigeria’s challenge was not necessarily the absence of laws but the failure to uphold the spirit of the Constitution and the Electoral Act. Amupitan also described Bello’s book as a valuable contribution to Nigeria’s democratic discourse, saying the publication documented the country’s political journey from the return to democratic rule in 1999 to 2023. He said previous electoral cycles had provided important lessons that could guide preparations for the 2027 elections. “Every election teaches us lessons, and every electoral cycle provides an opportunity to improve on the last,” Amupitan said. Law officers in the Kwara State Ministry of Justice have issued a seven-day notice of indefinite strike to the state government over the alleged non-payment of outstanding statutory allowances and the failure to harmonise their salaries and conditions of service with those of magistrates in the state judiciary. The Law Officers Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, issued the notice in a letter dated July 20, 2026, and addressed to the state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The letter, obtained by The PUNCH in Ilorin on Wednesday, was signed by the Acting Chairman of the association, Keyinde Ayorinde, and its Secretary, Tolulope Oniyide. The association said the proposed industrial action, which commenced on July 20, will run until July 26, after which its members would proceed on an indefinite strike if the government failed to address their demands. The law officers said they had repeatedly appealed to the governor and the Office of the Head of Service for the payment of their outstanding allowances, but alleged that the government had remained indifferent to their demands. “We have made several representations to His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State, through the Office of the Head of Service, requesting the payment of our outstanding statutory allowances and the implementation of the harmonisation of our salaries and conditions of service, but these efforts have not yielded the desired result. “Our outstanding entitlements include the balance of the 50 per cent furniture allowance for 2020 as well as robe allowances for the years 2024, 2025 and 2026, all of which remain unpaid,” the letter stated. The association also demanded the implementation of the harmonisation of salaries, allowances and general conditions of service for state counsel with those of magistrates in the Kwara State Judiciary, in line with the 2005 harmonisation approval. The law officers said their demands were connected to their welfare and the nature of their duties, which they described as critical to the administration of justice and the functioning of government. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Bank, and Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria, has unveiled a Health Security Scorecard to strengthen the monitoring of states’ preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies. The scorecard was unveiled on Wednesday during a Health Security Scorecard Validation Workshop in Abuja, where health experts and development partners described the initiative as a critical tool for assessing gaps in state-level health security systems and driving evidence-based interventions. Speaking at the workshop, the Executive Director of Programme Partnership at the NGF Secretariat, Dr Ahmad Abdulwahab, said the initiative was designed to establish a unified framework for evaluating health security governance across the 36 states. “At the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Secretariat, we firmly believe that true health security is built from the ground up. While national frameworks provide the architecture, subnational execution and accountability are the bedrock upon which epidemic preparedness, detection and response must rest,” he said. Abdulwahab said the scorecard would integrate key health security indicators into a single assessment tool to help governors monitor progress, identify gaps, and strengthen accountability. “A core driver for our gathering today is the urgent need to establish a single, standardised health security governance assessment tool, the NGF Health Security Scorecard. “By harmonising disparate metrics into one unified instrument, we can eliminate fragmentation, reduce reporting fatigue, and provide state governors and policymakers with clear, actionable insights to strengthen health security accountability across all 36 states,” he added. Abdulwahab said the scorecard would enable states to evaluate their current level of preparedness and use the findings to guide future policy decisions and investments. “The scorecard helps assess each state’s level of preparedness and provides the data needed for informed decision-making on priority actions and improvements,” he said. Also speaking, the Executive Director of Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria, Dr Nanlop Ogburuke, said the scorecard would strengthen disease preparedness, prevention, and response at the subnational level. “There is little that can be achieved without the states. Health security can only be effective when implemented at the subnational level. If we strengthen state capacities and empower leaders to make informed policy and investment decisions, we will be better positioned to prevent and respond to outbreaks such as cholera, Lassa fever, Ebola, and other infectious diseases,” she said. Ogburuke noted that representatives from all 36 states and development partners were reviewing health security indicators and surveillance systems to ensure the scorecard reflected state-specific realities. The NCDC’s Dr Oyeladun Okunromade said the workshop was aimed at identifying gaps in state health security systems and establishing an accountability framework for tracking performance. “We are here to assess the gaps that exist at the state level and provide an accountability framework to track health security performance at the subnational level,” she said. The World Bank’s Senior Health Specialist, Dr Chijioke Okoro, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies. He said sustainable disease control depended on building resilient health systems at the state level. Participants at the workshop agreed that the Health Security Scorecard would provide a comprehensive assessment of states’ preparedness using state-specific data while promoting accountability and advancing universal health coverage across the country. https://www.operanewsapp.com/ng/en/share/detail?news_id=cccab56e762cec46013b6c41bcdf7408&news_entry_id=s312734e6260723en_ng&open_type=tanscoded&request_id=fb8e476a7c9bf50cf140059efabfe06b9b4d6c0b&from=publisher

Disaster was averted in the early hours of Thursday after a gas-laden tanker caught fire along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos State. The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olawale Afolabi, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the incident occurred at Ola Farm Bus Stop and was swiftly contained by emergency responders, with no loss of life or injuries recorded. Afolabi noted that the agency’s response team arrived to find the tanker engulfed in flames, adding that preliminary findings showed that the tanker was travelling at high speed when it struck a road bump, causing the driver to lose control. “Initial findings indicate that the vehicle was travelling at speed when it struck a road bump. “The impact caused the driver to lose control, which led to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak,” the statement read. Afolabi said LASEMA officials worked closely with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the fire, secure the area, and prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby homes, businesses, and other road users. He added that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and officers of the Nigeria Police from the Ikotun Division managed traffic and crowd control throughout the operation. “We are grateful to report that there was no loss of life, and no casualties were recorded. The track, which dropped on major streaming platforms on Friday, introduces a cross-border collaboration featuring South African artists Jazzwrld and GL_Ceejay. The announcement was made by Davido on his social media pages, where he confirmed the release and encouraged fans to stream the new song. The single has since become available on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, where it is already attracting attention from listeners across Africa and beyond. I Know Who I Be brings together Afrobeats and South African musical influences, creating a high-energy sound that reflects the growing collaboration between artists from both regions. GL_Ceejay also contributes to the track, adding to its South African musical identity. The song arrives after a relatively quiet period for Davido in terms of solo releases, making it a significant return to the spotlight for the award-winning singer. Known for his consistent presence in the Afrobeats scene, Davido has built a reputation for blending catchy rhythms with global sounds, and this latest release continues in that direction. Early reactions to the song highlight its upbeat production and club-ready energy, with fans noting the chemistry between the featured artists. The collaboration is also being viewed as part of a broader trend of increased musical exchange between West and Southern African artists, which has gained momentum in recent years. Industry observers see the release as another step in Davido’s effort to maintain his international reach while strengthening ties within the African music landscape. By teaming up with emerging South African talents, the singer further expands his influence while introducing his audience to new voices from the region. As I Know Who I Be continues to circulate on streaming platforms, attention is expected to turn toward whether it will signal more upcoming releases from Davido later in the year. For now, the single stands as one of the early major Afrobeats releases of 2026, setting the tone for what fans hope will be a more active year for the artist.
