Good morning House, I'm hoping to get your input on a critical decision regarding my immigration journey. I recently got my Canadian Student Visa approved for a 1-year (12-month) course-based MSc program, starting this January. I plan to marry my girlfriend, who is currently 26 and in her 200-level at NOUN. I am 28 and declared "single" on my visa application. Here are my main worries/questions: Marriage Timing: Will getting married between now and December help my/our journey to Permanent Residence (PR), or should I wait until I finish school and get my 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) then I come back to marry her. She should be rounding up her BSc by then. Spousal Work Permit (SOWP): My program is a 12-month course-based MSc, which I understand makes her ineligible for an SOWP while I am a student, but I am eligible for a 3-year PGWP. Is there any other route to get her to Canada sooner? IRCC Update: If I choose to get married now, how do I properly update IRCC about my change in marital status since I declared single on my application? Is it something I have to do before leaving Nigeria or at what point do I need to update my profile if going for marriage between now and December. I have only a few weeks to finalize plans. Your advice on the best strategy would be greatly appreciated. |
Got served… Reasons for the refusal of your application Officer Decision Notes (ODN): I have reviewed the application. I have considered the positive factors outlined by the applicant, including statements or other evidence: The applicant has provided a reason for their visit to Canada. However, I have given less weight to the positive factors, for the following reasons: The applicant's assets and financial situation are insufficient to support the stated purpose of travel for the applicant (and any accompanying family member(s), if applicable).- The applicant is AAAA BBBB applying to a program in Master of CCC from University of DDDD. - Scholarship statements provided belong to a third party (oil and gas) and indicate a scholarship of approximately $50 000 . Insufficient documentation to establish the relationship to account holder. - Partial tuition payment noted (approximately $2000 CAD). - Estimated tuition for 1 year for this program: $35 800 CAD - I note that a mandatory/partial tuition payment has been paid to hold their place in the program. No additional payments on file. While this amount would be sufficent to cover the applicant's tuition fees, it is unclear how the employer would cover the company's regular expenses where these funds to be allocated to the applicant's schooling. No documents were provided to indicate that the applicant's connection to the company. No documentation was provided to demonstrate that the other shareholders of the company are willing to sponsor the applicant. Based on the documentation on file, and the limited information demonstrating the availability of the funds, I have concerns that third party funds would be sufficient and available for the proposed studies. Therefore, I am not satisfied that applicant has sufficient and available financial resources to pay the tuition fees for the program of studies that they intend to pursue and to pay for living expenses while in Canada. Weighing the factors in this application, I am not satisfied that the applicant will depart Canada at the end of the period authorized for their stay. For the reasons above, I have refused this application. What I included in my previous application POF: 1. Scholarship award letter on company’s letterhead ($50,000 covering tuition + living expenses). 2. School entrance scholarship award letter ($3000 CAD) 3. Admission verification sent by the school to the scholarship board (on school letterhead). What I did not include: 1. Link to the public announcement of the scholarship. 2. Email correspondence showing the process (my application, assessment, and interview and finally award letter) What has changed now (after first application): 1. Tuition deposit now totals CAD $14,299 (school charges per semester, hence not paying in full at once). 2. Scholarship balance deposited into my personal account to cover tuition + living expenses. 3. Award ceremony photos with management. 4. Evidence for all transactions available (MT103). Question: How do you advise I approach my next application? My resumption is Winter. The MSc program is for 12 months [W,S & F]. Note: the scholarship is part of the company CSR project, I don’t not have any work relationship with the company Also note everything under “what has changed”happened after my application and a day to the refusal. Scholarship award is in USD |
Amycanada:I used Optimus Bank Limited for payment via PayMyTuition and it was vey fast. I’m believe it’s the same across banks Thank you. |
MsLavender:Please check your email… we are both in similar situation now |
OAOD:Bro, please be calm. This is actually my first time hearing something like this, and I’m here to learn too… Do you mean your school sent you an email saying that the programme you applied for (the same one that was used to issue your study permit) has now been cancelled? If that’s the case, what happens to all the money and effort already spent on securing the study permit? And will the same study permit still be valid for the same school if you decide to switch to another course? |
bullstriker:Thank you so much for your comment. Although I’m not married, the clarification about SOWP was really helpful. I had initially thought that all Master’s degree programmes were eligible, but from your feedback and the information on the IRCC portal, I’ve now learned that SOWP is only applicable to (MSc category) Master’s programmes with a minimum duration of 16 months. |
Hello Guys, Please, I need advice on which option is better: 🔹 Option 1: Master of Engineering (MEng) Duration: ~12 months (can even be completed earlier since it’s charged per credit) Requirement: 8 courses (0.5 credit each = 4 credits total) Cost: $35,750 CAD 🔹 Option 2: 2-Year Diploma Duration: 24 months Cost: $14,580 CAD per year = $29,000 CAD total Both programs are full-time. One more question: Is it advisable to rush the MEng and finish within 8 months, hope it won't affect my PGWP eligibility? I have 2 possible plans: 1. Register for 2 credit units in Winter 2026 and the last 2 credit units in Summer 2026 (finishing in 8 months). 2. Register for 2 credit units in Winter 2026 and the last 2 credit units in Fall 2026 (finishing in 12 months). In your opinion, which is more advisable: the 12-month Master’s program or the 2-year Diploma program? And if it’s the MEng, should I spread it over 12 months or fast-track it in 8 months? Thanks in advance for your input 🙏 |
Do we have anyone going to University of Guelph, Guelph Canada , resuming Winter 2026? Let’s connect |

What’s the status of this scholarship anyone with an update? |
Hello please I want to ask if the Scholarship comes with a bond of returning to Nigeria immediately after study |

Thank you for the breakdown. The scholarship comes from an indigenous oil and gas company in Nigeria. Awardee will receive an official award letter on their letterhead. Based on previous recipients, the scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, and a return flight. The company directly pays the tuition fees, and the remaining balance is given to the awardee for living expenses, but only after visa approval to ensure the funds are used for their intended purpose. According to my admission letter from the school, $50,000 USD should be sufficient to cover both tuition and living expenses. The school cost of acceptance range from $36,000 to $71,000 CAD, so the $50,000 USD scholarship should be enough as mine is around $63,000 CAD (tuition fee for the year + 2025 updated cost of living) The award letter will specify the school I intend to attend. If the Proof of Funds (POF) is assumed to be covered by the award letter, what do you suggest as a good way to demonstrate my ties to my home country? |
Hello Guys, Good morning Please I want to ask, getting an external scholarship from a reputable organization in Nigeria to finance my study in Canada on a Scholarship worth $50,000 (USD). Do I still need to provide any further POF? Because I really do not have any money in my account aside this $50,000 scholarship. Will this be sufficient enough to proceed with visa application? I also got $3,000 (CAD) scholarship from the school. I have no dependent just myself alone. Can the award letter server as POF |
