PoliticsI Have No Special Interest in Ondo Gov Election; Amosun Tells AD Leaders by SoTrueNg(op): 2:14pm On Nov 23, 2016
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has debunked media claim that he was part of a meeting held in Akure, where arrangement was made to arrest leaders of Alliance For Democracy AD, in Ondo State.
Governor Ibikunle Amosun
Barr. Tolu Babaleye, a State chieftain of AD, at a press conference on Tuesday alleged that there is a secret plot by Mr. Amosun, and the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to have members of his party arrested.
In reaction, Senator Amosun refuted the claim, saying there is no iota of truth in allegation.
A statement released by his Special Adviser on Media Adejuwon Soyinka reads:
There is no iota of truth to speculations that the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun is involved in any attempt to rig the Ondo elections. The governor of Ogun State, like every other faithful member of the APC, is desirous that his party emerges victorious in the upcoming Ondo State gubernatorial election.
Beyond that, the governor has no special interest. He is a true democrat and would not endorse any unfair practise in the quest for political victory.
So any one insinuating anything to the contrary is simply being mischievous.

Politics(photos) Buhari Meets CAN Leaders; Vows To Treat All Nigerians Equally by SoTrueNg(op): 6:30pm On Nov 03, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari says he will keep faith with the oath of office he swore, and treat all Nigerians equitably.

Receiving the Executive Committee Members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) from 19 Northern States and Abuja, at State House, Thursday, the President equally pledged to restore peace to all parts of the country, noting: “Restoring peace is top priority.  We will enable the law enforcement agencies to combat all forms of violent crimes, and ensure that our people live in peace.”

President Buhari urged the clerics to promote religious harmony, by “enhancing understanding among different faiths.”

He also disclosed that the government would maintain the priority it has placed on agriculture and mines and steel development, “to kick-start the economy.”

The Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said it was not a mistake that God chose President Buhari to lead the country at these challenging times.

“We are ready to support your administration to deliver good governance. You have good intentions for Nigeria, judging from the programmes that have been outlined,” Rev. Pam said.

He also highlighted ethno-religious challenges in the country, freedom of worship,  and herdsmen/farmers’ clashes in their discussion with the President.

The CAN leader commended the Buhari administration for the blow dealt Boko Haram insurgents, “leading to comparative peace in the North-east,” the return of 21 abducted schoolgirls from Chibok, and the anti-corruption war, which he urged “should be fought to the logical conclusion.”

PoliticsAmbode Vows To Complete Lagos-badagry Expressway Expansion By 2019 by SoTrueNg(op): 5:44pm On Nov 03, 2016
...Says Aboru-Abesan link bridge, road will be ready by 2017

… Work to commence on Irede road in four weeks

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday assured residents that the ongoing Lagos-Badagry Expressway Expansion project would be completed before the end of 2019.

The Governor, who spoke shortly after embarking on extensive inspection of ongoing projects across the State, said the project was a major economic catalyst for Lagos and therefore his administration was totally committed to seeing it through.

Recalling that his recent visit to Denmark was to finalise plans with APM Terminals to fast-track the commencement of work on the $2.6billion Badagry Deep Sea Port, Governor Ambode said it was important for the road network to be completed within schedule to accommodate the anticipated increase in economic activities within the axis.

“On the part of government, it is imperative that the project is accelerated and completed on schedule. It is a 10-lane expansion project with a provision for rail,” he said.

Governor Ambode said that though the project was awarded to Okokomaiko, his administration was almost at financial close to give it to a concessionaire who is expected to extend the project from Okokomaiko to Seme Border.

“We believe strongly that the contractor has done a good job here. We have given him the right of way and it is our belief that the one that has been awarded should be completed on schedule. I am committed to this project; I am committed to the expansion of the economy of the East axis of Lagos. That is the surest way to go.

“By doing this project, we would also expand the real estate value of this axis and the tourism potentials of the Badagry axis. I am confident that in no time, we should have a complete project before the end of 2019,” he said.

Explaining the progress of work done so far, General Manager of Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), South West, Mr. Guan Shuai, said extensive work had been done on three Flyovers and Interchange Bridges in Alaba, Agboju and Alakija.

He noted that the challenge of relocating pipes and cables belonging to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which hitherto slowed down the project had been resolved through the intervention of Governor Ambode.
While inspecting the stretch of link road from Agbelekale off Ekoro Road to Abesan Estate via Church Street, Giwa and Aboru, Governor Ambode expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project so far, but charged the contractor and supervisors to ensure the delivery of the project within the first quarter of 2017.

The Governor, who was received amidst fanfare by residents who displayed placard of various inscriptions commending him for the project, said the bridge being constructed as part of the project had to be extended from 240meters to 360meters due to the nature of soil in the area.

He said: "Just about five months ago, we were here to see the progress of this project. This road is designed to connect all the people living in the Aboru area to Iyana-Ipaja and also to the LASU-Iba road and all the people living within the Ajasa Community. You will recall also that just about three months ago, we were here to open up the Ajasa Command road and this is another project to complement the opening up of the Alimosho community.

"Like the contractor has promised, we hope to finish this project by the end of January next year. We have also found out that we need to extend this bridge by an additional 120 meters because of the nature of the soil in this area. I had earlier promised that this project would be delivered by the end of this year but I'm pleased with the progress being made on this project. I want to urge the contractors and the supervisors to ensure that we meet the completion date and that within the first quarter of next year, all the people in Alimosho will enjoy this facility," he said.

At Irede Road in Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Governor Ambode was briefed by the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ganiyu Johnson and Housing, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal, who narrated the inter-ministerial work being planned for the axis.
Lawal said a 30 hectare land at Ado Trade Fair had already been designated for a 500 Housing Units which would be constructed in partnership with the private sector.

He said the project, which is a transit oriented development, would open up the area for economic activities and real estate, adding that it would complement the 13 stations of the Blue Line Rail Project and 10-lane Lagos-Badagry Express road.

In his response, Governor Ambode expressed displeasure with the state of Irede Road, assuring that work would start on the road within the next four weeks.

He said: "It is very clear that this Irede road is in a very deplorable condition. I have come personally to see it and I have received complaints from people of this community. I also see that the economic value that we stand to benefit from upgrading this road is unquantifiable.
"Beyond the fact that we will open up the road to the Lagos Badagry Expressway, we also intend to expand our housing policy and the rent-to-own scheme to this neighbourhood. So, I like to just clearly state that work would commence on Irede Road within the next four weeks," he said.

Politics“no Work No Pay,” Ogun Govt Tells Groaning NLC And TUC Members by SoTrueNg(op): 10:50pm On Oct 17, 2016
Ogun State Government has issued a note of warning to civil servants serving under the state government, vowing to invoke no work no pay on workers that partake in the proposed Strike set to be embark upon by the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, and Trade Union Congress TUC.

This was contain in a release by Barr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, Secretary to Ogun State Government, on Monday.

Earlier, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, in conjunction with Trade Union Congress, TUC, and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, at a conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital,  vowed to begin an indefinite strike on Thursday if the state government does not pay them deductions from their salaries and other allowances.

The press conference, addressed by Abiodun Olakanmi, Olubunmi Fajobi and Akeem Ambali, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Press Centre, was called to serve a “last warning,” following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum by the labour unions to the state government.

Mr. Olakanmi said the unions had embarked on strike in March but suspended it following the intervention of the State House of Assembly, traditional rulers and other prominent citizens in the state.

He said the workers would resume the strike, unless the state government met their demands and honoured various agreements reached in the course of the dispute.

The workers are asking the government to immediately pay outstanding 12 months unions check off dues, stop contributory pension deductions, and pay 12 months of other deductions, which include bank loans’ repayment, co-operatives’ savings, Ileya/festivals savings and gradual payment of retirees gratuities.

“Without the state government attending to these demands, the industrial action we are embarking on come Thursday will not be called off nor be suspended,” Mr. Olakanmi stated.

“We view the inaction of the Ogun State government as being deliberate, calculative and designed to make the civil servants poorer”, he stressed.

Mr. Olakanmi said a worker had died in the state “due to lack of money”. He added, that “workers can no longer tolerate the bluff of the state government, while most of them agonize in silence”.

The state NLC chairman, Mr. Ambali, said the workers have suffered enough.

“It is a total strike. If they call us we will not answer”.

He said the workers were prepared to forfeit one month salary in order for their deductions to be paid.

The Chairman of the TUC, Mr. Fajobi, said the state government had on numerous occasions reneged on agreements with workers.

“We have been humiliated to the extent that many can’t feed their families, many can’t pay their children’s school fees and take care of themselves. Everybody has agreed to go on the strike,” Mr. Fajobi said.

Read the full Statement released by the State Government :

The Ogun State Government has described the proposed strike action called by a few disgruntled elements in the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) as illegal.

The state government wondered why this few, unpopular elements would seek to lead workers out on a misguided strike action since government has not defaulted in the payment of salaries as and when due.

For instance, the Ogun State government paid its workers September salaries on September 25, 2016.

With regards to the backlog of unpaid cooperative deductions, the SSG added that the state government has also kept faith with an agreement it reached with labour leaders in March 2016 to the effect that one month of cooperative deductions would be paid, alongside monthly salaries, every two months.

“We promised to pay outstanding gratuities when we receive bulk funds from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) but this has not been forthcoming due to the dwindling revenue profile of the state,” Barrister Adeoluwa said.

In addition to this, the Ogun State government is also aware of the fact that under the extant Public Service rules, the TUC/NLC, which signed the notice of strike action issued on Monday, have no roles in calling workers out on a strike action at the state level. On the contrary, it is only the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council that is authorized to do so.

In view of this, the Ogun State government therefore declares the proposed strike action as illegal, unreasonable and totally uncalled for while urging the generality of its workforce not to heed the call of a few misguided elements whose motive is clearly political.

To buttress this point, the SSG said information at the disposal of the state government has shown that the labour leaders have ulterior motives beyond the protection of the interest of workers.

This is further exemplified by what played out during the commemoration of the 2016 World Teachers Day when labour leaders, against the grain of Civil Service Rules, hired a musician and sang the praise of a politician for hours on end.

In the circumstance, the state government hereby serves notice that it will invoke the ‘no work, no pay’ rule of the Trade Dispute Act in relation to any worker who choses to embark on this illegal strike action.

Signed

Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa

PoliticsLagos Pivotal To Nigeria’s Recovery From Resession – Pat Utomi by SoTrueNg(op): 4:41pm On Oct 16, 2016
…As Ashafa lauds Ambode over handling of State affairs

Renowned economist and financial expert, Professor Pat Utomi at the weekend, said that Lagos State is a crucial catalyst if Nigeria’s economy is to witness a turn around for the better.

Utomi, who spoke at the Executive/Legislative retreat for members of the State Executive Council and lawmakers from the Senate, House of Representatives as well as the House of Assembly, said there were a lot of lessons to be learnt from the Lagos economy, which according to him, is largely driven by it’s huge investment in infrastructure, vibrant tax collection strategy and an enabling environment for businessses to thrive with less dependence on oil revenue.

Utomi, in his paper presentation, cited an example of when Comrade Adams Oshiomhole emerged as the Governor of Edo State and alluded to the fact that he needed to learn how Lagos was getting it right and then replicate same in Edo.

“The first thing he (Oshiomhole) did was to say he needed to learn how Lagos was getting it right. And he came over to Lagos with his core team to understudy the Lagos developmental model. And we can see how that worked well in Edo,” Utomi said.

He said that several other states have also followed suit in emulating how the tax and IGR template works in Lagos and how the public service is structured in a way that there is good coordination.

Utomi said the Lagos example should be prescribed for other states and for Nigeria as a whole, because according to him, the momentum would be good for the country, just as he canvassed for the South West States to scale up it’s economic integration.

“This is why I have always advocated for a Lagos-Ibadan megalopolis. Lagos is already a mega city by virtue of its population, but a deliberate economic integration with other South-West states can produce even better results.

“This won’t be a new template. In fact it will be taking us back to the template of the old federal structure in a way, when the three regions had a healthy competitive spirit that brought about development.

Also Speaking, Senator representing Lagos East at the Senate, Gbenga Ashafa commended the Governor for coming up with a platform where the executive and legislature meet to deliberate on issues affecting the people with the view to pull human and material resources together in the interest of the people.

Ashafa, who is the Chairman of Senate Committee on Land Transport, said he had been assured by Governor Ambode that the rail reform of Lagos is almost ready, saying that upon completion, the Light Rail of the State would bring serious dividends of democracy to the people, as well as employment, which in turn, would hasten Nigeria’s recovery from recession.

The lawmaker, who also spoke on kidnappings in the country, commended Lagos for the way the crime had been handled which had always resulted in release of victims unhurt, saying that it was a sign that the State cannot be a haven for criminals.

Besides, Ashafa assured that the bill seeking one percent of revenue accruable to the Federal Government to be spent in Lagos would be represented to the Senate, adding that the passage would be pursued with every needed energy.

PoliticsMy Life In The Rooms By Bamidele Ademola -olateju by SoTrueNg(op): 10:29am On Oct 15, 2016
Family Room - This is where the television is. I am here for the most part. I listen only to political stuff and news. In the age of technology, my tablets and phones are always here. When I am not watching TV, I'm always buried in them. I am of no use to uncle Demi, my daughter or any human here. When I am free or when I liberate myself, I watch Forensic files. I think I should be employed doing investigations.

Living room - We have a mini bookshelf here. This is is my thinking place. Philosophy comes to life here. This is where artistry and culture is. Here is where I exhibited my conservative cultural minimalism best. On the credenza are books that are not yet read. I steal glances at them, sometimes I peruse a page or two to stoke my interest. I am an academic here. Not a wife. I do motherhood here sometimes so I can ritualize the book spirit into my daughter.

Dinning Room - I am a mother, a cook, a sister and a friend here. We eat here, tell stories and personal stuff. Don't remind me to be a wife here unless you don't want the next meal. Treat me like the accomplished chef that I am. Did I tell you I am a good cook when I'm not on a revenge mission? In my days as the real sinner, I use to put excess pepper/coarse salt in the food of those who misbehaved.

Kitchen - I am a chef here. I have always had a gourmet kitchen with sparking stainless appliances before it became the vogue. I love bragging about my collection of bone China and silverware. I cook but I don't wash plates. I am not a wife here! I am a Chef!

The Study - This is where the Holy spirit is. Very serious place. The spirit controlling books and knowledge have their shrine here. Nobody misbehaves here. I'm better behaved here than in the Church. The whisper of servers, teleconferencing stuff, laptops in hibernation creates an atmosphere of reverence. Remove one paper here and destroy a life. Uncle Demi is celibate here. I just maintain!

The Other Room - This is the bedroom! Our President is such a prude! He can't even bear mentioning the bedroom. Yet we have evidence of their liaison and I hear Fulani men sabi do Koko. I have heard many things o...some relating to equipment. Anyhoo, this use to be my favorite room where I show my original mescabehavior( I learnt this word from my aburo - the teacher of bedroom tinz Olufunke Phillips). In my original element, I can seduce any man here. I like elaborate stuff. The old Kanuri women in Maiduguri schooled me before I got married. Holy Jesus!!! I no wan talk too much sha. All that changed when HM was born and uncle Demi said she must sleep with us. He said we have suffered too much. I should have been warned of this unimaginable father-daughter love then! The crib and baby monitor was useless. HM slept on his chest until she was 2 years. Omo, that was how uncle Demi tamed me o! Koko no dey happen. If i see VOA then, i for grant interview wey pass Aisha own wallahi!!! At Age 4 I arranged her room nicely and made efforts to get her to start sleeping in her room. This girl would cry buckets and sneak in between our sheets. Early evening, her father would cosy up to her, reading bedtime stories, while I roast and until I'm bored to sleep. I don't like midnight stuff.  Before 3am she's  in our room. American bedrooms have no locks. Even if we lock ourselves up, she would have  banged the door. She still does it now every weekend. She calls it family time and I am still helpless. I don't know if I signed on for it.

Now that we are empty nesters, we were just trying to reconfigure and Baba Buhari has ruined it for me again! That is the remote and immediate wahala now. I have only one room where I am a wife. Am I a good wife? Happy weekend my fiful!

Crime(Photo) Lagos Task Force Arrest 4 Women For Using Children To Beg For Alms by SoTrueNg(op): 8:28pm On Oct 13, 2016
Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to continue to protect the dignity of children in Lagos as a signatory to the Child Rights Act just as it strives to rid the state of beggars in pursuance of its zero tolerance policy on street begging.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth & Social Development, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola disclosed this on Wednesday while parading arrested women using small children to beg for alms at Iyana-Ipaja roundabout.

He said the culprits, comprising four women with infants, were apprehended while soliciting for alms during routine operation by the Ministry’s rescue team at Iyana Ipaja, stressing that it has not been established if the beggars are the biological parents of the children.

According to him, “It is very sad that most of the beggars are not the biological parents of the children they use for begging and it’s our responsibility as government to protect the dignity of children being used to beg for alms which is a punishable offence under the law of the land”.

Muri-Okunola maintained that the State Government will continue to rid Lagos streets of beggars because some of them have also been caught aiding and abetting criminals in perpetuating their heinous acts like kidnapping and robbery among others.

While warning that the present administration is determined to prosecute offenders contravening the State’s Environmental Law through street begging, Hakeem implored Lagosians to cooperate and support the government in eradicating this menace in the State.

Culture(photos) Olubadan Breaks 17 Years Jinx; Visits Alaafin Of Oyo by SoTrueNg(op): 8:02am On Oct 12, 2016
The Olubadan of Ibadan land, HRM Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, in company of Olubadan-in-Council, prominent indigenes and honorary traditional title holders in the city on Tuesday, paid a courtesy visit to Alaafin Oyo, HRM Oba Lamidi Adeyemi in Oyo town.

It will be recalled that the supremacy battle among the three royal institutions namely Olubadan, Alaafin and Soun have turned indigenes and members of the respective council against one another in the last fifteen years.

The last Olubadan to visit the palace was the late Oba Yunusa Ogundipe, who ruled from 1999 to 2007.

Oba Adetunji said he decided to pay the Alaafin a visit because of the role he played during his installation and coronation as the Olubadan on March 4, 2016.

He said it was vital for Yoruba leaders to unite and move the people forward.

Olubadan said, “I am here today to say thank you to the Alaafin of Oyo. I came to thank him for his support and for honouring me during my installation and coronation as the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Like the Yoruba would say, if someone gives thank for yesterday’s kindness, he would get another one, so, I am here to thank him so that I will be able to get more of such kind gestures.”

Oba Adeyemi in his own submission said it would go a long way to strengthen and uphold the cord of peace, unity and cooperation between the two monarchs, their subjects and cities.

While praising the ingenuity of Oba Adetunji, the Oyo monarch noted that the visit exemplified the kind of relationship that should exist between monarchs in Yorubaland, adding that both Oyo and Ibadan cities were unique because they were the foremost native and real speakers of Yoruba language

He said, “Aside from chieftaincy and kingship matter, a lot of people don’t know we (Alaafin Adeyemi and Olubadan Adetunji) are very close. We have known each other for a long time and we have been relating, even when he was still a high chief and a member of the Olubadan-in-Council.

“This is how we should be doing. Our relationship as Oyo and Ibadan can only get better. In our times, good things will continue to happen in Yoruba land.”

PoliticsFayose List His Achievements, As He Marks 2 Years In Office by SoTrueNg(op): 12:27am On Oct 12, 2016
PRESS RELEASE:

AN ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE SECRETARY TO THE STATE GOVERNMENT AND CHAIRMAN, PLANNING COMMITTEE FOR THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE FAYOSE-ADMINISTRATION IN EKITI STATE ON TUESDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2016 AT THE CONFERENCE HALL, GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, ADO-EKITI

It gladdens my heart to warmly welcome you all to this Press Conference, which marks the beginning of a series of events, lined up by the State Government, to commemorate the second anniversary of the Fayose Administration in Ekiti State.

Recall that on the 16th October 2014, at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti, when His Excellency took the historic oath of office for the second time as Governor, he declared his government, as a “Government of Restoration”.

Furthermore, the Governor clearly itemized the six developmental objectives of his administration. These are:

• Empowerment

• Development of Agriculture

• Infrastructural Development

• Education, Science and Technology

• Health

• Security

Today, two years down the road, it has become imperative to render stewardship to the people, who entrusted us with power through the ballot box with high expectations and faith in the ability of our Governor and Leader, Mr. Peter Ayodele to deliver, having been tested once between 2003 – 2006, with obvious fool points as legacies up until today in the State.

Restoration has come for the Education sector, under the Ayodele Fayose Administration with the record breaking score of 96.48% performance of Ekiti Senior Secondary three students in the 2016 National Examination Council Examination (NECO), to emerge an enviable first position in Nigeria.

This feat is attributable to two factors. First the grace of the most High, the giver of good success and second to the revolutionary forward looking policies of the Fayose-led government in the Education sector unanimously agreed upon by stakeholders at the Education Summit convened in September, 2015.

Parts of the resolutions are intensive monitoring and capacity building of Teachers, payment of core subject allowance and rural posting allowance, outright ban of automatic promotion, intensive monitoring and supervision of schools and prioritization of teacher’s welfare which restored conference between government and teachers, and relationship which ab initio was characterized by doubt, mistrust and job insecurity.

These crystallized in the progressive performance chart of students in public examinations from 29th position with an average 58 per cent in 2014 to 18th position with an average 74.5 per cent in 2015 and now to the enviable position of first in 2016, with a percentage score of 96.48%, for the first time in the history of the National Examination Council (NECO).

Performance in the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) also gives reason to cheer from 25 per cent in 2014, to 37 per cent in 2015 and now 42 per cent in 2016, while for the School of Nursing, it has been a consistent 98% pass in 2015 and 2016 and for the School of Midwifery, it has been all time high of 100 per cent score in 2015 and 2016 in National Exams conducted by the National Council of Nurses and Midwives.

The State Government has remained visionary in the development of infrastructure in spite of the challenge of funds and heavy debt portfolio inherited huge investments have been made in Roads, Public Buildings and Infrastructure, some of which include the first ever 1.2km Ado-Ekiti fly bridge undergoing construction at a cost of N5.7billion naira, the New King’s Market estimated at about 3 billion naira, Awedele Market Road with street lights and median, N488 million naira, Oke-Ila Housing Estate Road constructed at 396 million naira, Onala Petim Road N495MILLION NAIRA AND De-Head Bawa Iyin Road constructed at N782 million naira.

This is apart from the dualisation of roads in some local government headquarters such as Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ikere, Emure, Ise, Omuo and Efon-Alaaye and reconstruction and rehabilitation of Intra city roads to ensure a widespread rural integration development across the State.

In view of the transparency initiative of the Fayose Administration, which earned the government another first in budgeting in 2015 by the Civil Resources Development Document Centre, I humbly invite Gentlemen of the Press, the fourth Estate of the Realm as critical stakeholders in the sacred mandate of ensuring accountability between government and the people, to the series of events lined up to celebrate two years of the visionary leadership of Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose in Ekiti State.

PoliticsLagos To Start Disbursement Of N25bn Employment Trust Fund Next Week - Ambode by SoTrueNg(op): 4:10pm On Oct 11, 2016
…Plans recruitment of 5000 neighhbourhood watchers to boost Security

… As governor holds 5thTown Hall Meeting In Surulere

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday disclosed that the State Government would begin the disbursement of the much anticipated N25 billion Employment Trust Fund (ETF) and other empowerment programmes initiated by his administration next week.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the 3rd Quarter 2016 Town Hall Meeting, held at the Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere said that the funds for the programmes targeted to assist youths, artisans and the needy become self reliant have been provided, hence beneficiaries would start getting support from the last quarter of the year.

“We will roll out all our empowerment programmes immediately to assist all our youth, artisans and the needy. The funding for the N500m Lagos State Persons Living with Disability Fund has been provided and beneficiaries will start getting support from this quarter,” Governor Ambode said.

To beef up the security in the State, especially at the community level, Governor Ambode also disclosed plans to recruit at least 5,000 Neighbourhood Watchers with new recruits expected to earn at least N25, 000 monthly with other allowances.

He said the neighbourhood Safety Agency Bill which he signed into Law on August 15, 2016, was part of efforts to institutionalise and deepen community policing in the State.

“There is a law that has just been passed which is the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps Law, 2016 and in line with the resolution taken by the House of Assembly yesterday, we would go all out to make sure that this agency is activated and all our neighborhoods will be covered, and then centralize with the State Government with all the necessary equipment and resources to ensure that we establish what we call community policing and that is the way to go.

“We will rebrand Neighborhood Watchers and re-equip them to the level that each Neighborhood Watchers in all the Local Governments will have their vehicles and necessary equipment to complement security. We are also working on employing additional 5,000 Neighborhood Watchers in all our Local Governments and they will be paid by us, while the basic salary for the entrance level will be N25,000 per month,” the Governor said.

Speaking on the budget performance of the 2016 budget, Governor Ambode disclosed that the State’s budget performance for January to September performed at 69 per cent as against 65 per cent for the same period in 2015.

He said a total of N166.8billion has been spent on capital projects this year, a figure, he said, was more than double the N53.6billion spent for the same period last year.

Governor Ambode said the State generated a total revenue of N97.3billion in the last quarter with an expenditure of expenditure of N110.2billion, noting that the cash reserve of the State has remained positive.

The Governor also disclosed that a total sum of N55billion was expended on capital expenditure in the last quarter.

According to him, the last quarter witnessed a lot of activities from the delivery of massive road infrastructure across the Local Governments in the State as well as the promulgation of the anti-Land Grabbing Law, aimed at making life easier for property owners and a boost in investment activities that will enhance the growth and development potentials in the State.

He expressed optimism that despite the recession, the State’s economy would remain on a strong and sound footing if capital expenditure spending is increased.

“In this quarter, we will concentrate more resources on capital projects. We will put money in the hands of our local contractors and through them stimulate and reflate the economy. Immediate payments will be made to contractors handling health sector and education sector projects within the next two weeks,” Governor Ambode assured.

Speaking on some projects outlined for the next quarter, the Governor said that plans have been concluded to transform the Yaba Bus Park with the provision of modern bus shelters replica of the ones erected at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Governor Ambode also assured that the road rehabilitation projects ongoing at Adetola Street and Brown Road in Aguda, Surulere as well as Olajuwon and Biney Streets in Yaba would be completed before the end of the present quarter.

He said with the completion and delivery of the first phase of the 114 local government roads last month, the process of bid invitation for the construction of additional 114 roads across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas would commence within the next three weeks.

“We have commenced a multi-faceted development that will change the face of Lagos Island. We have installed new bus shelters at Tafawa Balewa Square and before the end of December, various projects will be commenced within the National Museum axis, Onikan to Tafawa Balewa Square, and from Lagos House Marina and Freedom Park. By the time we complete these projects, Lagos will become a major tourist destination in West Africa,” the Governor said.

Also speaking during the interactive session at the event witnessed by captains of industries, party chieftains and members of the diplomatic corps, Oba of Lagos, HRM Oba Rilwan Akiolu, lamented the suspension of a bill seeking special status for Lagos by the Senate, but expressed optimism that the bill would still become law in the nearest future.

He said: “The suspension of the bill sponsored by our amiable daughter and wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is unfortunate but it is better and advisable to let these people know that this is not a matter of quarrel but a question of time. It will definitely happen.”

The monarch, who recalled the history of the agitation for special status for Lagos, urged the promoters of the bill to go back to drawing board and do their home work well before representing it for consideration and passage.

The Governor, who also spoke on the issue, commended Senator Tinubu for her courage to push for the bill, while also lauding the Senate President, Bukola Saraki for his magnanimity in allowing the bill to be presented on the floor of the Senate.

He however expressed optimism that the bill would be reactivated and represented again, saying that the success of the bill was in the overriding interest of Nigerians.

PoliticsRecession: Lagos To Introduce Monthly Payment On Housing Schemes by SoTrueNg(op): 5:26pm On Oct 10, 2016
…Set to roll out more LagosHOMS

In a bid to cushion the effects of economic recession in the country, the Lagos State Government has perfected plans to introduce monthly payment plan on its Home Ownership Mortgage Schemes popularly called Lagos HOMS across the State.

The State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who stated this after embarking on an extensive inspection tour of projects across the State, said his administration has decided to scale up the rent-to-own policy by introducing monthly payment plan whereby people can pay monthly instead of being compelled to make a down payment of 30 percent of the total cost or pay for one year.

He said: “We believe strongly that people should be able to pay one month rent and live in our housing schemes. We don’t think in a recession, we should be having a situation where we allow people to come and buy when they don’t have money or to come and pay one year rent. We think the way to move forward is to allow these our younger ones to just pay one month deposit and pay one month rent and move into the houses and then more or less play up our rent-to-own scheme,” Governor Ambode said.

While speaking on the pocket-friendly initiatives of his administration on housing, Governor Ambode said the State Government has taken time to review its mortgage schemes vis-à-vis its financial flow, adding that many ongoing housing schemes have reached advanced stages of completion, and that they would be rolled out in a matter of months.

The Governor, who inspected the Illubirin Housing Scheme in Lagos Island, said government, in partnership with private sector, is making arrangement to transform the scheme into a live, work and play environment.

“In addition to that, the other housing projects that we are doing are on course and I want to assure Lagosians that in the next few months, we will be seeing a whole lot of housing units being rolled out,” the Governor said.

On his part, the State’s Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal, debunked insinuation that the Illubirin Housing Scheme had been abandoned, saying that government was rather working to improve on the project which is sitting on 28 hectares.

He recalled how the project started under the administration of former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu with sand filling, while his predecessor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola carried on with the project.

He said: “Now, under the administration of Governor Ambode, we want to scale it up and the idea is to make this place a live, play and work environment and so we are projecting 500 units instead of the 1,260 that the scheme was formerly designed for. We believe government funds should be deployed to some other sites that we are working on and to also come up with new designs and new buildings and so instead of government to recapitalize this project, we are working with the private sector and the investor that has come up is investing about $500 million.”

According to Lawal, about five hectares of the Illubirin scheme would be dedicated for leisure, while there would also be commercial activities, as well as flyover which would be constructed.

He said the State Government is already working with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Waterfront in that regard, adding that the flyover would be on another phase.

He also said that all the phases of the scheme are expected to span between five to seven years, but that there would be a lot of improvement on the project before May 2019.

Governor Ambode also inspected the ongoing construction of a lay-by and slip road into Isheri Olowora at Berger bus-stop.

PoliticsNigeria At 56: A Country Without A Soul by SoTrueNg(op): 5:16pm On Oct 01, 2016
By Bámidélé Adémólá-Olátéjú

A Country Without A SoulWhat is the soul of Nigeria? What defines Nigeria other than its geographic boundaries? What is there to cheer about a country that kills intellect? What is there to hail about a country that kills industry. What is there to praise in a country that retards enterprise?

Nigeria is mediocrity
Nigeria is sloth
Nigeria is corruption
Nigeria is impunity
Nigeria is greed, avarice and primitive acquisition

I am out of my house, exiled by thieves. I am at the breakfast table, wondering and pondering. I have asked all morning - why am I in Nigeria? Have I misplaced my optimism? The investigating police officer handling the purported burglary treks to my house. Nigeria asks him to do the impossible! He walks to locations to question suspects, to effect arrests all at his own dime. How can he be effective? Yet he manages to remain calm and professional. He manages to assuage my pain and reassure me. Nigeria helps its police to be corrupt. Police stations looks shabby and indecent. The country emasculates them and the society disdains them.

Show me the bright spot in Nigeria today! What is there to celebrate in a nation in fits and starts? I committed to doing my best possible for Nigeria and for the youth because I want a future for the Nigerian child and for the youth. I want my daughter to be proud of her ancestral roots.

15 years ago, I told my husband I don't want to work after 55. I just want to leave out my days volunteering for humanity. He has supported me so far. That is not going to change! No! It can't change! The strategy can change. In the last few days I have felt violated. I feel terribly insecure. This is a nation that killed its Attorney General and the culprits are roaming ad libitum. I am here not out of necessity but because I want to be in the thick of things. I want to feel what I do and what is happening. I don't want to work in abstraction.

Without a doubt, Nigeria has failed! We still have a chance at redemption but can we? I am afraid for my country of birth. We have a capricious situation on our hands. Happy Independence day anyways!
