Africa’s most celebrated table tennis star, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri and the current African champion, Egypt’s Omar Assar have been listed among the 64 seeded players for the 2017 World Table Tennis Championships holding in Dusseldorf, Germany on May 29 to June 5.

Already, 64 top players in the world including Olympic and World Champion, China’s Ma Long have been exempted from competing in the preliminary round of the championships while they are expected to begin their campaigns in the main draw (first round) of the tournament.

Quadri who has also been listed among the world title contenders by the world table tennis ruling body – International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is seeded number 31 in the men’s singles while his continental rival – Assar is rated 50 among the 64 top seeds.

Leon Balogun has declared Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in August as a must win match to ensure they inch closer to picking Russia 2018 ticket.

The Super Eagles are the current Group B leaders with six points from two games, followed by the Indomitable Lions, who are second with two points and the German-based defender says they must be resolute against the current 2017 African Cup of Nations champions.

Nasarawa United coach, Kabiru Dogo is pleased with his side’s victory over Rivers United in a Nigeria Professional Football League rescheduled game on Sunday.

Adamu Hassan’s 16th minute goal ensured the Solid Miners claim maximum points at the Lafia Township Stadium to rise to 9th on the log, the tactician believed his side were not favourites to win the duel due to their non-active status in the last two weeks.

Dogo also disclosed that his target for this season is to finish among the top five teams, and sunday’s win has put them in the position to achieve their target.

Former Enugu Rangers coach, Imama Amapakabo has debunked media reports linking him to a couple of Nigeria Professional Football League clubs.

The Super Eagles assistant coach said he has not been contacted by either of Wikki Tourists or Kano Pillars, both which doesn’t have substantial coaches for their various teams, saying he’s been on national duty scouting players for the three-time African champions.

Enyimba FC technical adviser, Gbenga Ogunbote is hopeful that his side’s new signings, Lordson Ichull and Koffi Franco Atchou will bring something extra to the team in the second half of the season.

Both players were unveiled by the club on Monday, with a possibility of the duo featuring for the seven-time Nigeria Professional Football League champions on Tuesday in the Abia State FA Cup semi-final clash.

The former Nigeria under-23 Ichull joined Enyimba from Nasarawa United on a two-year contract and will wear the no. 31 jersey, while Togo international Franco has earned four caps for the Sparrowhawks, and joins from Malian side Stade de Malien. He will wear the no. 30 jersey.

Both transfers have been entered into the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Domestic TMS, and all registrations have been completed.

The question is can they turn the fortunes of Enyimba around

Austin Eguavoen is delighted to start his reign as Sunshine Stars head coach on a winning note.

The Owena Whales defeated the Nigeria Professional Football League defending champions, Enugu Rangers 2-0 at the Akure Township Stadium on Sunday to stay six points above relegation zone, and the former Super Eagles handler says he was satisfied with the performance of his players.

He also stated that he is confident the victory will boost their confidence ahead of the second stanza of the league.

“I am very happy with this winning start,” Eguavoen said after the match.

“We have beaten the defending champions 2-0 and more importantly we played well, we created chances to score more goals, controlled most of the game and kept them (Rangers) on the back foot for large spells. This is a good sign.”
