Japan makes breakthrough in regenerative medicine A group of Japanese surgeons led by Masaya Nakamura professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at Keio University and a member of an elite group of scientists and doctors may have made a breakthrough in the field of “regenerative” medicine. These researchers believe the lives of patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, heart failure, blindness, paralysis and other debilitating health problems could be transformed using “induced pluripotent” stem cells, or iPS cells. https://www.hotpointng.com/post-contents/40530 |

Arsenal hit by food poisoning in China Arsenal were ravaged by food poisoning in Shanghai that ruled several key players out of their preseason friendly with Bayern Munich on Wednesday, manager Arsene Wenger said, AFP reports. The Frenchman revealed the sickness that had swept the Arsenal camp, coupled with the severe heat in China and long flights, made for far-from-ideal preparations for another taxing campaign. Wenger was shorn of Olivier Giroud because of food poisoning, then captain Per Mertesacker pulled out of the game just moments before kick-off because he too fell ill with the same problem. New signing Sead Kolasinac also had to come off before the break, while Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott were only substitutes because they were sick. Wenger’s ailing men were outplayed for long periods by Bayern before salvaging a last-gasp 1-1 draw and then winning 3-2 on penalties. Arsenal were particularly poor in the first half in the 36 degrees Celsius (97F) heat and Wenger admitted that the extreme conditions in Shanghai were “a shock” after flying in from Australia, which is in its winter. “I was a bit scared that tonight we could have big problems and in fact in the first half we suffered a bit,” said Wenger, under pressure to get Arsenal back in the Champions League this season. “Ramsey finished the game, but Walcott, Kolasinac, Mertesacker, Giroud, they all had a little food poisoning.” Wenger said the club – who next travel to Beijing to face Chelsea on Saturday –did not know what caused the food poisoning. https://www.hotpointng.com/post-contents/7319 |
Sanchez going nowhere, insists Wenger Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger Tuesday insisted unsettled striker Alexis Sanchez is going nowhere, saying he expected him honour his contract and potentially sign an extension. The Chilean, 28, has a year left on his Gunners deal but is yet to sign a new contract and has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Reports in Britain have said he could be offloaded for up to 80 million pounds (US$103 million, 90 million euros), but Wenger suggested this won’t happen. “The players have contracts and we expect them to respect their contracts. That’s what we want,” he said in Sydney about the striker. Asked if he remained determined to keep Sanchez and not let him go to a Premier League rival, Wenger replied: “Yes, that is a continuation of what I said at the end of the season. That’s what we will do. “He adds great value to the squad and I think as well he is a great lover of the club.” Sanchez, who at times last season cut a disgruntled figure as Arsenal struggled with form and uncertainty over Wenger’s future, is not on the team’s pre-season tour to Australia as he rests after last month’s Confederation’s Cup. But Wenger said reports that the Chilean ace had informed him that he wanted to leave the club were not true, replying with a curt “No”. He added: “I think the easiest way to manage a player is in the final year of his contract. It is in his interest to do as well as he can. “Nobody knows today if Sanchez will be on his final year of his contract next season, because he can extend his contract with us at the start of the season or during the season. “So it is not necessarily the last year of his contract at Arsenal Football Club.” Arsenal play two pre-season friendlies in Sydney this week, against Sydney FC on Thursday and Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday. https://www.hotpointng.com/post-contents/5091 |
Messi is world's best paid player, says Barcelona president Barcelona's Argentinian striker Lionel Messi, who recently extended his contract with the Catalan club, is "the best paid player in the world," club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said Friday. Barcelona announced Wednesday that Messi had agreed to extend his contract until 2021, in a deal that will keep the five times winner of the Ballon D'Or at the club until he is 34. No financial terms were disclosed but Bartomeu told the Barcelona sports daily Mundo Deportivo: "He is the best player in the world and he is paid like the best in the world and in the history of football. "He is the best paid sports player, because no one brings as much to his club as Leo Messi." Prior to his contract extension, Messi was the third highest paid sportsman in the world with an income of $80, million of which 53 million was in salary and bonuses, according the ranking published by Forbes magazine in June. His great rival, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, topped the ranking with $93 million, of which 58 million was in salary and bonuses, ahead of American basketball player LeBron James ($86,2 million of which 31,2 million in salary and bonuses). https://www.hotpointng.com/post-contents/4249 |
West Ham To Pursue £50m Deal For Arsenal Strikers Olivier Giroud And Theo Walcott Arsenal strikers Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott must consider their futures at The Emirates Stadium and should contemplate moves to West Ham United, according to Nigel Winterburn. With Alexandre Lacazette having joined the Gunners for a club-record fee both players are expected to find regular first team football hard to come by, particularly if Alexis Sanchez remains beyond the end of the summer transfer window. https://www.hotpointng.com/post-contents/3986 |
Manchester United have agreed a fee of around £75m with Everton for striker Romelu Lukaku. The 24-year-old Belgium international scored 25 Premier League goals last season. United, who have been chasing Lukaku for most of the summer, will not now be pursuing their interest in Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata. The move for Lukaku is not connected to talks aimed at taking United forward Wayne Rooney to Everton. Jose Mourinho’s side are hopeful of concluding a deal in time for Lukaku to join the squad before they depart for a pre-season tour to the United States on Sunday. The striker was on a list of forward options Mourinho gave to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward before the end of last season. It had been thought Lukaku would return to his former club Chelsea, who he joined from Anderlecht in 2011. The striker was sold to Everton for £28m by Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s second spell in charge of Chelsea in 2014. Lukaku is a client of agent Mino Raiola, who also looks after Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – three players all signed by United last summer. The Belgian turned down the most lucrative contract offer in Everton’s history in March and later said: “I don’t want to stay at the same level. I want to improve and I know where I want to do that.” (BBC) https://www.hotpointng.com/post-contents/3988 |
