Education / How To Spend Your School Holidays Wisely by StandoutUKC(m): 3:15pm On Nov 06, 2016
So your exams are now over and the school holidays are here. What are you going to do?

While some students have great plans for spending their school holidays, most, simply, don't.  You may have made no plans at all. If so, I would like to recommend the following:

Get Plenty Rest

It's a great time to sit back and relax after all the stress caused by your exams. Spend the first few days catching up on lost sleep. It promises to be rejuvenating and refreshing.

Eat Well and Healthy

You have surely missed homes made meals and your family delicacies; it's time to enjoy them once again. Eat to satisfaction, but do not become obese. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits to renew the brain. You would want to resume back to school with a recharged brain.

Health Check

This might be the time to go for health check. You might also need to consider taking routine treatment for some ailments like, Malaria, typhoid fever etc. But you must crosscheck with your family Doctor. Do something sporty. You can ride your bike, walk, play your favorite sport or even try a new one. Any of these sorts of activities are a good way to get healthy.

Family Reunion

Spend time with loved ones. The holidays are a great opportunity to have rare, cherished conversations with family members you haven't seen for a long time. For instance, you might want to visit your grandparents and have a quality talk with them. You might be surprised how funny and insightful some of your very own relatives have become without your noticing.

Self Appraisal

Now you are free from the hustle and bustle of school activities, and the stress of the just concluded examinations, this could just be the perfect time to appraise your academic performance. Check up on your academic goals, and see if you are still on track. Re-strategize for the incoming academic session. Develop a study plan....

Religion / 10 Indispensable Traits Of True Christian Leaders by StandoutUKC(m): 9:00am On Oct 31, 2016
Leadership is defined as the capacity to direct, guide and lead people to a defined goal. It thus follows that, Christian leadership is the capacity to direct, guide and lead people to a saving knowledge, and fellowship with Christ Jesus.

According to 1 Thessalonians 2, there are some character traits we find in the life of the Apostle Paul which is common to true Christian leaders, namely:

1. Sacrificial Disposition: Christian leadership entails sacrifice. The Christian leader must be willing to make sacrifices for those under his leadership, if he must earn the title "true".

2. Honesty: There is no room for deceit. Deception and flattery will produce a congregation with shallow roots that cannot stand the test of Faith.

3. Purity: The true Christian leader must abhor uncleanness of any kind nor guile, whether in speech or in thought.

4. God pleasing: The Christian leadership system is not a democracy but a theocracy, and as such, the duty of the true Christian leader is to please God and not men.

5. Sincerity: Even when it hurts, the true Christian leader must be committed to saying the truth to his followers with all sincerity, and at all times.

6. Contentment: The Love of money is the bane of the modern church leadership. The true Christian leader must not be covetous nor seek to fleece the congregation.

7. Humility: This is one virtue that seems to be lost among contemporary church leaders. The true Christian leader must not be self conceited and proud.

8. Gentleness: That Christian leadership is a theocracy should not make the leader bossy. He should be "gentle and apt to teach... " He should be approachable.

9. Affection for followers: You cannot correct until you first connect. Those being led must see genuine affection from their leader. This trait is thus very vital for the true Christian leader.

10. Worthy and Noble Lifestyle: True Christian leaders are models, and as such their lives must be worthy of emulation. It should be noble, that is; a holy, just and unblameable life.

May we, at different levels of our leadership capacity, embody this traits.

Questions such as in multiple-choice tests and true/false tests assess specific factual knowledge. When you study for these tests, your goal should be to recognize facts at a glance.

On the other hand, Essay tests assess your mastery of themes and overall ideas. When you study for essay tests, your goal should be to recall broad information in an organized way. Your studying for essay tests should be related to this goal.

Here are the steps to follow when studying for an essay test:

1. Assemble the materials that contain the information that will be covered on the test. This includes your textbook, your textbook notes, your class notes, and your past questions series on that test.

2. Read these materials to identify themes and overall ideas. Each time you identify one, note the name of that theme or overall idea on a card or sheet of paper. You will often find the same theme or overall idea in one or more places, but use just one card or sheet of paper to represent it.

3. For each card or sheet of paper you prepare in Step 2, carefully review your textbook, textbook notes, and class notes and add written details about the theme or overall idea to the card.

4. Once you have completed Step 3 for each card, review your cards or sheets of paper several times. Doing this will give you a working familiarity with the information that is most likely to be the basis of questions on the test.

Health / Amazing!!! 8 Amazing Healthy Facts About Eating Fish by StandoutUKC(m): 9:02am On Oct 21, 2016
Are there any significant health benefits to eating fish over meat? Or is it just about individual differences in our preferences? Read through this health report as you discover 8 amazing reasons you might consider switching from eating meat to eating fish, for a lifetime.

1. Many fish, especially oily, darker-fleshed fish like salmon and herring, are rich in heart-healthy, polyunsaturated, omega-3 fatty acids.

2. Dietary guidelines in the United States encourage adults to eat eight ounces of a variety of fish and seafood each week – roughly two meals’ worth – because of the “total package of nutrients in fish,” which includes lean protein, vitamins A and D as well as B vitamins, and a host of minerals such as iron, iodine, selenium and zinc.

3. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding are urged to eat as much as 12 ounces of seafood to improve infant outcomes, but should steer clear of fish that’s high in methyl mercury such as king mackerel, tilefish, shark and swordfish as well as limiting tuna.

4. Fish is very low in saturated fat and low in cholesterol, therefore persons who incorporates seafood appear to be at lower risk for obesity, though a lot of people don’t think about that and just focus on omega-3s.

5. Fish can be a much leaner and lower-calorie source of protein than meat. A cooked four-ounce portion of cod, for example, contains 26 grams of protein but only one gram of fat and 120 calories, compared with a grilled four-ounce portion of lean T-bone steak, which has 28 grams of protein, 18 grams of fat and 278 calories.

6. Shellfish is especially high in selenium, and saltwater fish is high in iodine. The iron in seafood, known as heme iron, is more easily absorbed by the body than the iron from plant sources, and the small bones in sardines are a good source of calcium.

7. Numerous studies have found that people who eat fish on a regular basis are less likely to die of a heart attack than those who don’t eat it or eat it less than once a month, and a 2006 Harvard review concluded that eating one to two servings of fish rich in omega-3s every week cut the risk of dying of a heart attack by one-third.

8. Dietary guidelines urge adults to consume 250 milligrams per day of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). You can get a week’s supply in an eight-ounce portion of salmon or albacore tuna. Other good sources of omega-3s are anchovies, herring, sardines, shad, trout and mussels.

So, would you not consider eating more of fish in your daily menu?

Live healthy!

Career / 8 Things You Must Do To Standout Anytime, Anywhere by StandoutUKC(m): 8:24am On Oct 19, 2016
Everyone desire a life of significance; who wouldn't? We all want to live that superlative life, to standout in any where we find ourselves and at anytime. When it comes to standing out of the crowd, it is not usually the "big" things that matter; rather, it is the small, little and insignificant things that matter.

When I talk about standout living, I simply imply:
a life characterized by excellence - disdain for mediocrity, in any shade or color;
a purpose-driven life - not a purposeless and haphazard life;
and living with the end in mind - thinking about the legacy you leave behind you.

Few persons in every place usually standout. Sometimes, it could just be a person; other times, it could be a subset of persons from a larger set of people. Whichever the case, standout living is about being peculiar wherever you find yourself. Dr. Mike Murdoch said: "Your peculiarity is not in your similarity with others but in your difference".

What then must you do to standout, anytime and anywhere?

Education / 4 Things You Should Do At Life's Crossroads - Number 4 Is The Hardest. by StandoutUKC(m): 8:08am On Oct 19, 2016
Crossroads are part of life. There is nobody who has achieved anything worthwhile in life that has not been there before. It is a necessary part of life's journey - life is a journey you know! And crossroads are junctions on the road!

What are crossroads?

Crossroads are those points in our lives, a crucial point especially, where a decision must be made. Literally, it is an intersection of two or more roads. Those points in your life when you need to choose either to go left or right, whether in your career, business, relationship, ministry etc, that is a crossroad. So you see, we all either have been there or would soon arrive there!

Why crossroads?

Good question there! Crossroads exist because you are on a journey. As in the literal journey, there are few long distance trips that you would not have to come across at least a crossroad, same thing applies to the journey of life and destiny ahead of you. Are you on a journey? Do you have a life mission to accomplish? Are you pursuing your purpose in life? Then expect crossroads. The good news is: only a man on a journey encounters crossroads. So cheer up! You are a person of destiny!

What to do at crossroads

When you finally arrive at a crossroad in life, what should you do?

Health / See What Those Antibiotics Are Doing To You! by StandoutUKC(m): 11:10pm On Oct 11, 2016
Is it true that too much of everything is bad? You will certainly agree after reading through this study…

Antibiotics are powerful medicines that destroy bacteria, and they’re lifesavers when an infection caused by dangerous microbes needs to be overtaken. But in the U.S., about half of all prescriptions written for antibiotics are inappropriate. The drugs aren’t just over-prescribed in adults; one study found that antibiotics are prescribed to kids about twice as often as they should be.

To treat problems from sore throats to acne, doctors expose kids early and often — and scientists have been finding links between antibiotic use and rising chronic illnesses. A new study in mice published in the journal Nature Microbiology finds a link between Type 1 diabetes and antibiotic use.
