Nairaland / General / Buhari, Wife, Others Shun Made-in-nigeria Products by Stanley0(m): 1:04pm On Nov 06, 2016
Despite the Federal Government’s consistent calls on Nigerians to patronise Made-in-Nigeria products in order to strengthen the economy and aid national development, SUNDAY PUNCH ’s investigation has shown that President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his team are using foreign products. The investigation showed that except their clothes, the President and his team have been using foreign products ranging from their shoes to their cars. For instance, there was outcry especially on social media platforms recently when Buhari was spotted in a pair of Gucci 1953 horsebit loafer shoes. The price of the shoes was put at $640 at that time. Not a few Nigerians were surprised that with his acclaimed austere lifestyle, the President could be spotted in such expensive imported shoes. Further investigation showed that none of the vehicles in the President’s convoy was manufactured or assembled locally. His official car is a Mercedes Maybach S600 described as “an extra highlight in the luxury segment.” The vehicle in base-line configuration is said to cost around $258,000. The President’s wife, Aisha, has also been attracting comments to herself lately over the various expensive and foreign fashion accessories that she uses. She had earlier been spotted holding a Hermes Birkin 35cm Porosus Crocodile Gold Hardware Bag in Washington DC recently. The bag was said to be worth over $70,000. A Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin bag was said to have been auctioned for $432,000 recently. A news portal had claimed that the pink version of Mrs. Buhari’s Hermes handbag was auctioned in 2015 for $222,912 at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong. Shortly after that, the President’s wife was again on October 18 spotted wearing a $2,600 multicoloured cape to Brussels. She was also said to have been seen with an expensive diamond wristwatch by Chopard. A look at Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s convoy also showed that most of the cars are expensive imported cars except for the Nissan Patrol Sports Utility Vehicle being used by some security operatives. The SUVs were manufactured in Nigeria. Our correspondent also observed that Buhari’s 36 ministers have Toyota Land Cruiser VXR V8 cars as their officials cars. The President’s security chiefs also ride exotic bulletproof BMW cars. But when contacted on the matter, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the President and Vice-President are already leading by example. Shehu however said it was not the idea of government that officials should stop riding cars made abroad simply because those cars were bought overseas. Such, he said, would be ridiculous and result to a waste of resources. He said, “It is not the idea of government that its officials should stop riding cars made abroad simply because those cars were bought overseas. That will be ridiculous, and a waste of resources. “The purchase and use of home made goods and services is a new campaign that will take time to fully entrench itself. This country has not banned the importation of goods.”

Politics / Budget Padding: Sanctioned “padders” Back To Work In Ministry by Stanley0(m): 12:10pm On Nov 06, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari’s avowed
determination to punish culprits who smuggled
foreign items into the 2016 budget and who
caused both national and international
embarrassment are back to work, Economic
Confidential can report.
Investigation by the Economic Intelligence
Magazine indicates that the officials who were
sanctioned by their deployment outside Federal
Ministry of Finance have since resumed duties
in the same Ministry without the highly
publicized punishment the President promised
while speaking to Nigerians resident in Saudi
Arabia.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in February
this year while speaking in Saudi Arabia
threatened to punish all those who were
involved in the padding of the budget.
Apart from the removal of Director General of
Budget Office and deployment of several
directors and senior officials from the
Ministry, President Buhari also merged the
budget office with the Ministry of Planning.
About 15 senior officials from other Ministries
and Departments were posted to the Budget
Office to replace the sanctioned officials that
were recalled to Office of the Head of Civil
Service of the Federation.
Other Ministries involved in the un-wholesome
attitudes include but not limited to Federal
Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of
Education, Health, Agriculture and Rural
Development, Trade and Investment, and
Interior Ministry.
Meanwhile, Economic Confidential learnt that
there has been an unhealthy rivalry between
the Ministry of Finance and the Budget and
Planning Ministry which are under the
supervision of Kemi Adeosun and Udo Udoma
respectively over who should superintend over
budget processes and implementations in the
country.
The development has no doubt created frictions
between the two ministries and lack of the
needed synergy required by both to put up a
forward looking national budget. In view of
these concerns, some departments have been
created in the Federal Ministry of Finance that
play critical roles on budget implementation.
The departments include: Cash Management,
Special Projects and Technical Services,
bringing the total departments in the Ministry
to more than 10. Some of the sanctioned
officials are said to be performing strategic
roles on the nation’s economy in these
departments.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has
vowed that all those involved in the padding of
the 2016 National Budget, which led to the
discrepancies in the document, would face the
most severe punishment.
He said the alterations, which he described as
embarrassing and disappointing, made the
document, which was debated in the National
Assembly, completely different from what was
prepared by the Ministry of Budget and
National Planning.
In a statement, then by his Special Adviser on
Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the
President spoke in Riyadh while addressing the
Nigerian community in Saudi Arabia.
The President was said to have condemned the
distortion of the budget proposals by those he
called entrenched interests.
Buhari stated that since he had been holding
public offices, he had never heard about
budget padding before the current incident.
He regretted that the unauthorized alterations
had completely changed the document from the
one he presented to the National Assembly.
The President, however, gave the Minister of
Budget and National Planning, Udo Udoma, a
clean bill of health, saying he did a good job.
Buhari said, “The culprits will not go
unpunished. I have been a military governor,
petroleum minister, military Head of State and
headed the Petroleum Trust Fund.
“Never had I heard the words budget padding.
Our Minister of Budget and National Planning
did a great job with his team.
“The minister became almost half his size
during the time, working night and day to get
the budget ready, only for some people to pad
it.
“What he gave us was not what was finally
being debated. It is very embarrassing and
disappointing. We will not allow those who did
it to go unpunished.”

likely be killed by another prisoner.
--------------------------
Advise yourself, your family members and your friends
against drug trafficking. There is nothing heroic about being a drug peddler; as your major claim to fame is being responsible for destroying a lot of lives in any country you strike and succeed. And some countries will not tolerate it. They will put your to pasture when caught. There is nothing
cool about been so greedy that your life means nothing to you; that you are willing to face a firing squad. An ignoble death. Those clapping for drug peddlers do not mean well for them. They are encouraging you to keep on doing what will lead to your shameful doom. Nothing heroic about it.

GEJ was a good man that never favoured Nepotism just like his successor. in fact to a large extend, more attentions were given to the North than any other part of the country. The governor must be high on weed when he made that odd comment about GEJ. let APC stop the blame games and focus on revitalizing the economy. If they know they can't hold the economy any longer, let them employ the services of those who can or resign. Nigeria in recession is a big blow to us in front of the world at large.

Atiku is indeed a wise politician. He refused to be hoodwinked in the leadership crisis rocking the national Assembly. But truly, the time has come for him to make a stand. Yes, it is time to move on just as he said. But what row as an elder statesman will he play to stop the crisis. He either be for or against. Silence over the matter will only make him a weakling
