Nairaland / General / Delta State University sacks 10 Lecturers, 8 Junior Staff Over Sexual Harassment by Stanleybig(m): 9:42am On Sep 03, 2017
The Governing Council of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has sacked 10 lecturers, eight non-teaching junior staff and warned 17 others for extortion, sexual harassment and gross misconduct, among others.

This was revealed on Friday via the official website of the university in a memo signed by the university Registrar and Secretary to the University’s Senate, Mr. Daniel Urhibo. Most of the 17 teaching staff, who were reprimanded for Plagiarism, according to the statistics, were Readers in their various departments. Others were from the ranks of Assistant Lecturers to Senior Lecturers.

According to the statement, the decision was taken based on recommendations made by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) to the university’s Governing Council after the institution’s 101st regular meeting held on Friday, 18th August, 2017 at the university premises.

Urhibo, in the statement, said the workers were allegedly thoroughly investigated by the SSDC and appropriately sanctioned based on the gravity of the crimes committed. Three senior officers from the Bursary Department were also among workers dismissed from the service of the institution

Education / ASUU Strike: FG To Disburse N23bn To ASUU Next Week. by Stanleybig(m): 7:01am On Aug 19, 2017
Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has disclosed that the Federal Government has made arrangement to release the sum of N23 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

He made this known while speaking on Tuesday before the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, led by Senator Jibrin Barau.

According to him, plans are on ground to honour the agreement between the FG and ASUU.

He stated that the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had already approved a total N53bn for the union so far, adding that the balance of N23bn would be released on Monday when the striking lecturers would receive the cheque.

He however said, “We didn’t agree with ASUU on their request that TSA should be taken out. I told them that it is not possible because it is a new policy and government is not going to change it for anyone.

“Concerning their salary short fall, we said the reason springs from universities employing people without proper authority.

“For instance, a university can just decide to go and recruit 50 people without notifying IPPIS. So, what they are going to get is the money they got last month, which will not be sufficient for them. We have told them that institutions should, henceforth, stop doing that and they accepted.

The Minister finally Said that he is optimistic that the strike will be called of within then next one week maximum.

Nairaland / General / ASUU-FG Meeting Deadlocked, Minister Says Strike May Be Called-off By Next Week by Stanleybig(m): 12:02pm On Aug 18, 2017
The Federal Government’s efforts towards getting the the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)to call off its nationwide strike failed on Thursday as both parties did not agree on some issues.

According to a source who was present at the meeting, the Federal Government promised to honour all of ASUU’s requests except the one regarding the TSA.

It was gathered that the government admitted wrongdoing and appealed to the lecturers to call off the strike immediately, but the appeal was rejected by ASUU leaders, who pleaded for time to meet their members because of the TSA.

The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige stated after the meeting that the government was expecting feedback from ASUU on the overtures made to it, adding that the union promised to return to the negotiation table within one week with hope of finally calling of the strike.

Nairaland / General / A Must Read - Change Begins With Me: The Jamb Example by Stanleybig(m): 10:01am On Jul 28, 2017
After almost two decades of energy sapping combat with corruption, Nigeria, from all indications, is still in quandary on how to effectively tame the menace. Today in Nigeria, corruption stands tall and rotund, gnawing at every effort made to subdue it. Both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the sister Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) seem to have lost track, leaving corruption to rear more hydra heads.
The two main anti-graft agencies created to fight corruption over the years do not seem to have a co-terminus approach in their war against the incubus. Sometimes, they work at cross-purposes. The EFCC, for instance, is seen to be impressionistic and egregious in the war, using the media as a tool, all along. On the other hand, the ICPC appears stoic and laid back, convinced that it could advance in the war against corruption by mere system overhaul and prevention. All the same, little results continue to trail every initiative they had put in place. Before the advent of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, corruption became virulent, holding a promise to make Nigeria history.

Months ago, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed invented an idea of how Nigeria could dig pitfalls around corruption and make it fall, at least gradually. Nigerians laughed their heads off when he came up with a catch phrase; “Change begins With Me.” He had little audience since a disproportionate number saw his idea as impracticable having hitherto, been treated to the effusive and gratifying impact of corruption. But Lai Muhammad was not acting in isolation of the expanded agenda by the government of President Buhari to battle corruption headlong. Now, that effort has started resonating positively in different corridors, and most veritably in agencies like the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

A week ago, JAMB dominated the media space with reports about being parsimonious in handling its finances for the just concluded 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UMTE). JAMB was reported to have remitted the sum of N5 billion into the federation account being the amount it saved from the conduct of the examination. Nigerians found the feat very incredulous; believing that no agency of government had been that transparent. JAMB is simply demonstrating responsiveness to the anti-corruption posturing of the present government. The idea is that other agencies of government must be on the cue to initiate their ways and means of advancing the war, using different techniques.

If JAMB appears to have woken up suddenly with a foul mind against corruption, the starting point should be traced to the Registrar, Professor Isaq Oloyede. The Registrar, once the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, is an instant fighter of corruption. The legacies he left behind at the University of Ilorin speak volumes. Since he assumed office as Registrar, he has laboured to impress it on JAMB stakeholders that a new era where the agency’s funds must be judiciously utilised had just set in. His vows to bring a new order in JAMB ruled by efficiency, financial prudence and transparency were mocked in familiar quarters. But he meant business. At every point, he had dared saboteurs who seemed determined and desperate to subvert his every good steps and efforts. Today, his commitment to “Change” and insistence on leading by example has started paying off.
Before the 2017 UMTE, the Registrar had expressed aversion to the idea of raking in the sum of N7 billion from sales of registration forms and blowing the sum of N6.8 billion in the conduct of examination. He vowed not to spend more than N500 million for the 2017 UMTE and managed to do just that, leaving JAMB with an excess of N5 billion.

The spokesman of JAMB while analysing the cost saving measures by JAMB for the 2017 UMTE said, “Before now, JAMB budgeted for the sum of N7 billion. But this year, we have been able to prune down the cost very drastically, limiting our spending to N500 million. JAMB may not spend up to that in 2018 since it is expected to improve on the template from this year to attain this goal.
In his address to stakeholders of JAMB at a recent meeting for reviewing the conduct of the 2017 UMTE and preparations for the following year’s exam, the Registrar explained the reason he had chosen to lead by example. He alluded to the Change Begins With Me mantra of the Federal Government, stressing, Change Begins With Me campaign is not only a slogan, it is already a way of life which we believe in and which we have adopted as our guiding principle.
JAMB is not only excelling in the area of prudence, accountability and transparency. The Board has started re-inventing the future of Nigeria by curbing corruption maximally at the level of writing of examinations with more of candidates being inculcated with the spirit of hard work, self confidence and adequate preparations before every examination.
Years before now, examinations written in Nigeria at all levels had been characterized by brazen malpractices. Schoolteachers had been in collusion with invigilators and parents to allow impersonators write examinations for academically deficient students. Female students had severally been caught stuffing exam answers in the innermost part of their bodies, and had recourse to blackmail when exposed. There are reports of magic centers too, which no invigilator or examination official dared to visit during examinations, mostly JAMB, WAEC, NECO and others. The effects have been disastrous for Nigeria. Those who exploited the weak examination systems had secured employment into sensitive places, using the old power of corruption. Today, the system of Nigeria hardly runs unless oiled with brazen and sickening touch of corruption. JAMB has started changing the narrative, just as the 2017 examination it conducted was reported to be 98 percent free of malpractices.

In the 2017 examination, JAMB simply deployed Information Technology to halt corruption and all forms of malpractices. Its closely knitted synergy with GSM networks providers made this easy. Before the examination, JAMB created 642 Computer Based Test centers (CBTs) to administer examination for over 1,722,236 candidates, the highest ever in the history of the Board. Each of the CBT Centers had CCTV cameras to track down registration and examination malpractice within and outside exam halls. In the process, it was easy to weed out Centers that indulged in irregularities and malpractices. Today, all candidates must register under the lenses of the CCTV camera just as the footage is uploaded to the Board Headquarters for close monitoring and future references. Indeed, there is nothing stopping JAMB from improving on the feat it attained this year.
If other government agencies must learn from JAMB, their focus should be on necessity for immediacy in execution of plans and table-tables. For instance, JAMB has already set machinery in motion for conduct of the 2018 UMTE. In reviewing its omissions and successes during the last examination, the Board is planning to spend far less than N500 million to conduct the next UMTE. By implication, JAMB is expected to remit more than N5 billion into the federation account next year!
In essence, leading by example as demonstrated by an agency like JAMB is an unassailable way of re-inventing Nigeria. Individuals, groups and most especially government agencies should start emulating JAMB to change the narrative about Nigeria being irredeemably corrupt.

Nairaland / General / Amists Controversies, FG Restores CRK, IRK As Separate Subjects In School Curric by Stanleybig(m): 9:16am On Jul 21, 2017
ABUJA – TO halt the growing controversies trailing its removal of Christians Religious Studies and Islamic Religious Knowledge as Independent subjects from the education curriculum, the Federal Government, Thursday, directed that both subjects be reinstalled as independent subjects.

The government asked the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, the country’s education body charged with the development of school curriculum, to immediately reinstall the two subjects where they were before their removal.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, gave the directive at a meeting with State commissioners of education and stakeholders in education sector, in Abuja.

Christian Religious Knowledge
The minister was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwukah, at the meeting aimed strengthening the partnership within the three tiers of government in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 4, SDG4.

Speaking at the occasion, Adamu said the restoration of the subjects to their old status was imperative given the controversies their removal had generated in recent times, especially the complaint by the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN.

He explained that the collapse of the two subjects was done by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to reduce the number of subjects offered by pupils and students in schools.

The minister said: “There is this controversy over the merger of CRK and IRK in the school curriculum. There were complaints by parents that children were overloaded with so many subjects and the recommendation then was to merge one or two subjects. Unfortunately, water and oil were merged together and it is not working.

“So, to save ourselves the agony, the two subjects should be separated. We push that to the NERDC,”

Adamu, in his address, reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to revamping the education sector and appealed to state governments as well as relevant stakeholders to support the federal government effort.

He also expressed the commitment of the government towards achieving the SDG4 by 2030 in line with the global timeline.

The minister said Nigeria has selected the Goal 4 of the SDGs, which emphasizes inclusive and quality education for all and promotion of lifelong learning, for implementation in view of the importance of education as a fulcrum to national development.

He said the federal government was aware that in the journey towards achieving the Education 2030 Agenda, key issues including the phenomenon of out-of-school children, insecurity in and around the schools and infrastructure decay must be addressed.

The minister said there was also the need to have credible and reliable data, and how to address the challenge of poor teacher quality as well as teacher gaps, low carrying capacity in tertiary institutions, and poor learning outcomes.

“We recognize that the task of revamping the education sector is challenging, the ministry of education cannot do it alone. Our task is to coordinate national efforts to meet our national goals and objectives.

“It is our believe that with good planning, appropriate investment of resources, transparency, due process, effective collaboration and coordination of inputs and activities of government and that of all stakeholders, we will realize our vision of providing quality education to build and sustain adequate human capital for national development,” the minister added.

Nairaland / General / Re: The Power Of Perception And Career Success by Stanleybig(m): 5:10pm On Jul 19, 2017
Nairaland / General / The Power Of Perception And Career Success by Stanleybig(m): 5:09pm On Jul 19, 2017
In the business world, it can be tempting to believe we’re all operating in the same objective reality. After all, we deal in things like facts and data. We forget sometimes that reality is actually quite subjective; it’s shaped by the observer. Different people can interpret the same facts and data in entirely different ways. In doing so, they can—in essence—create their own version of reality and shift the course of their future.

As a career-minded person striving for success in the professional world, it helps to remember that your perceptions are not merely a result of reality; they are, indeed, a source of it.

How we perceive the world and our place in it impacts how the world perceives us. Ultimately, that has the power to influence our experience in it.

Let’s break this down…

Perception is literally defined as, “gaining awareness.” However, as humans, we also interpret that of which we become aware. We make meaning of it and judge it. We experience something and immediately evaluate it, based on our own subjective point-of-view. Is it good or bad? Helpful or harmful? Useful or useless? We look at ourselves and pass judgment as well.

The conclusions we make impact how we behave. If we deem something positive, for example, we embrace it. If we deem it negative, we reject it. When we label ourselves strong, we’re emboldened. When we label ourselves weak, we retreat.

Our behaviors are visible demonstrations of how we think. Other people view our behaviors and create their own perceptions—they brand us, so to speak. They judge us competent or incompetent, wise or ignorant, skilled or unskilled, and so forth. Those perceptions may not necessarily be the reality we know or want, but that doesn’t matter.

Other people’s perceptions shape their reality, and their behaviors are a response to this. That perceived reality will influence how they treat you. When they perceive you as a competent, wise and skilled professional, for example, they’ll interact with you as such. They may afford you more opportunities. They may assign more value to your contributions.

Likewise, when others have negative perceptions about you, their behaviors will reflect it.

Here’s the undeniable truth: How others perceive you in the workplace directly impacts your reality—whether or not the perceptions created are objectively true.

From there, the cycle continues. You view the behaviors of others, create perceptions, and so on.

This entire process is depicted in the illustration below.

The Power of Perceptions

So, how can we harness the power of perceptions in positive ways?

First, we must learn to question how we perceive ourselves and the world around us, and recognize that our interpretation of reality is not necessarily the truth.

With our incredibly sophisticated human brains, we have the power to explore other perspectives. We can actually choose to see things in ways that serve us well, rather than in ways that hinder us.

THE POWER OF PERCEPTION IN ACTION

Let’s consider an example most people will find relatable. Imagine you’ve just been told that you didn’t get the promotion you had hoped for. Immediately, your perception is that the decision is unfair. You’re a victim. They’re playing favorites and this is yet another example of how the whole system is rigged. You deserve that promotion and someone has made a grave error.

With this point-of-view, your resulting behavior would probably look quite immature and entitled. This would only serve to assure the decision-makers they were right, and your chances of a promotion in the future would likely vanish.

Or maybe you hear the news and immediately perceive yourself as worthless. If you don’t deserve advancement now, surely you never will. So you slink off into the background and vow to stay exactly where you are.

Again, the decision-makers would see this behavior as confirmation, and your future would be sealed.

Now, imagine using what you’ve just learned about perceptions to your advantage. You know you have the power to shape how you see the world and, in doing so, you know you can channel your behavior in more positive ways. So, you explore the other possibilities.

Perhaps the decision-makers had good reason to pass on your promotion. Maybe you’re missing some critical skills. Maybe you don’t have the right experience. This opportunity didn’t work out, but that doesn’t mean others won’t in the future.

With this point-of-view, your resulting behavior would probably look thoughtful and professional. You would graciously accept the decision, but open your mind to the lessons. Perhaps you’d be inclined to start a dialogue about how you can improve and create a path for promotion in the future.

This behavior would shape others’ perceptions of you in positive ways, and your chances for future advancement would likely improve.

Does it matter whether the decision not to promote you was objectively fair or unfair? No. The decision is made; that’s an irrefutable fact. You can choose to view it in any way you’d like. Why not choose a way that helps you cope with it productively?

At the same time, it would also be helpful to work backwards and ask yourself what existing perceptions might have contributed to the decision not to promote you. What past behaviors have led others to believe you’re not a worthy candidate, and what role have your own perceptions played in that?

This is a fundamental concept upon which career and life success are built.

If you want to change your reality in the workplace or anywhere else, you have to consider perceptions—your own and others’. If you want people to perceive you in positive ways and treat you accordingly, you have to demonstrate the behaviors that warrant it—and that starts with the perceptions you have about yourself and your experiences.

In order for people to respect you, you must respect yourself first. To achieve success, you must first embody the spirit of success.

Here’s the good news: How you think and how you behave are entirely within your control, as demonstrated in the earlier example. When you choose wisely, you can forge new paths for yourself. You can’t always control the outcome, but you can influence it greatly

Nairaland / General / JAMB Remits 5 Billion Naira To FG - The Highest Amount In The Last 40 Years by Stanleybig(m): 7:13am On Jul 19, 2017
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that it has remited a total of 5 Billion Naira to the Federal Government which happens to be the highest so far in the last 40 years of its existence.

This was disclosed by the JAMB's head of media, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

He disclosed this while advising candidates applying for direct entry against multiple registration.

According to him, “The Board is not interested in the candidates’ money as is being insinuated by certain group who suggested to the Board that such registration will enhance the revenue base of the Board.

“No, we are more interested in the credibility of the examination and not the money, if money is our concern we will not be returning over five billion naira to the Federal Government coffers.’’
