First of all , establishing a business is no easy thing , and employers deserve all the credit for that , but most one man businesses in Nigeria struggle for stability , most end up before they even started , but let go straight into it , mistakes they make High Staff Turnover - the hire and fire , they do not provide conducive environment , even to extent i went to a company and a youth corper was the oldest staff, people come and go like on a daily basis , lots of rules , some one business are unique with better staff turnover but 90% have huge turnover Poor structure - When #500 has to be approved , you can not go home still the MD approves lol , if u go home without seeing him , you are in trouble , no appraisal, KPI , for me if your contract states 8-5 why do i need to be scared to go home , once i have executed the deliverables , i can imagine what employees go through , saturday they drag u to work , no overtime , sometimes these MD's are bored and need companion and would do anything to keep employees late , very sad , for me set , KPI(key performance indicators ) and have their performance reviewed , i can not have my staffs treated like secondary students, you come late by one minute they deduct but you can close as late as they want , no reporting structure , 2 people on same roles and one is earning times two of the other , most times leading to non productive environment Poor welfare - HMO are no expensive, most times high staff turnover , makes it waste , terrible salary , as in paying someone 30k , and think the person would stay , that's a joke na , very poor structure , u hear salary increment and you see 5k or 10k increase that is a joke , even something as small as TGIF (nothing) , i visited a company , even dispenser water , staff are not allowed to drink , only customers ,wow, no pension remitted after deducting , payee no remitted, and i can go on , i understand business are experiencing tough times but somethings are unacceptable , i believe , rather have 20 staffs , 5 staffs well motivated will yield better results Bad recruitment - for most MD's in nigeria , Cheap is better , not resulting to efficient and effective staffs, most Md's wont mind staff cost are a minimum and slow operations and wont spend on training , most times loose more than they gain , they end up sacking and sacking , or have their job abandoned at critical times Rigid/non flexible - i have staffs and i must not see them every day , the mentality of sit in office ,which some jobs do not require , most do not understand , some cost you incur unknowingly , light , gen , internet , u have staff caged and they use it to apply for jobs , watch movies ,run your gen all day , once you meet the deliverable you should go , you can opt to work from home at least u can say once a week u work from home , most of these MD's spend millions on rent in big office , my Lekki and V.I MD's understand , why not have a small space, some have empty offices or big space doing nothing with it , carry unnecessary cost The way Forward , Apply standards , the NLC need to step in with , compliance with the working hours , compliance with staff welfare and help with the gods of employers who does whatever , whenever with no regards , my candid advice to employees ,better days are ahead but do not settle for less , remain upward mobile and improve on places found wanting , and improve professiona; qualification , seek standard over pay
